Freshmen Breaking for Waxman?

If true, this is excellent.

An informal survey of about two dozen incoming Democrats resulted in 18 saying they support Waxman and just three saying they support Dingell, said one freshman lawmaker who requested not to be identified.

This conflict is quite opaque, even to members themselves. It makes sense though that new members would support Waxman; he's more aligned with them on a whole host of issues and on ways of doing politics. Also, some self-interest is at work here. Seniority is not a persuasive argument to new members of Congress.

I'd say this battle is more important than the Lieberman fight. Dealing effectively with global warming can't be put off by Dingell any longer.

Lieberman owes his ass to Obama, there's no way he's going to be doing any kind of investigation. And beyond that he doesn't have to deal with anything very critical.

On the other hand, this is a key battle. Waxman who's very progressive would control healthcare and energy policy, probably two of the most important issues we'll face.

Lieberman's fight isn't anywhere close to this one.

Waxman's Been REALLY On Top of Things For A LONG Time (4.00 / 3)

It's worth recalling that Waxman had his staff prepare a report on how the Bush Administration was systematically distorting the scientific/expert advisory process back in August of 2003. This remains the prototypical analysis of how the Bush Administration operated, and to my mind no one has a clearer understanding of what we are up against, functionally as well as substantively, than Henry Waxman has.

When it comes to being "reality-based" this is the gold standard for work in Congress during the Bush years.
