Republican Blogger: "We Lost Because We Suck"

While there's a fair amount of denial going on in the righty blogosphere (it was the media's fault!) there are some examples of refreshing, head-not-buried-entirely-in-the-sand, honesty:

We lost because nobody in their right mind would trust us to run a government.

Why? What did you do wrong?

We've long been the Party of fiscal restraint, but when we had all three branches we went on a spending binge that would embarrass a drunken sailor...... In seven years we demonstrated to the American people that we really didn't mean what we'd said for all those years; we weren't against spending, we were against Democrat spending. We weren't against big government, we just wanted it big in the places we like. The people caught us in the lie and held us responsible for it.

But wasn't it just the media's fault?

I know, it wasn't right, wasn't fair, was a media lynching of GWB; all of that is true, but we laid ourselves open for it. When you run as the adults of the group, you don't put the former general counsel of a horsebreeding association in charge of a high profile federal agency.

Picky picky.  But what should be done? From the comments:

Who pushed us into the suckosphere?

I know you don't like this question, but if we don't get rid of those who lead us here won't they just lead us back to sucking after they again gain power?

The cancer of suck isn't cured by just acknowledging the suck...I think at this point maybe a regiment of suck killing chemo might be in order. Otherwise we will just see a remission of suck until it comes back more powerful. And that would really suck.

No it wouldn't.

Just wait (0.00 / 0)
Just wait until they actually try their small government ideals.  Then we will really see a backlash against Republicans.

Personally, I think Republicans should reject "small" government and replace it with "simplified" government.  But they won't.

Who pushed us into the suckosphere?

I know you don't like this question, but if we don't get rid of those who lead us here won't they just lead us back to sucking after they again gain power?

Well, if you think the suckosphere sojourn was the result of big spending, and lack of fiscal restraint, then the answer to that one would be Ronald (triple the national debt in no time!) Reagen.  And when GHW Bush tried to put the breaks on that even just a little, you all got into such a hissy fit that you let Bill Clinton take over for 8 years. And he balanced the budget.

So, maybe you might want to make LBJ, FDR and WJC your new heroes.  Cause by your own lights, St. Ronnie just can't cut it.  He's the one who got you into this mess in the first place.

...if we don't get rid of those who lead us here won't they just lead us back to sucking after they again gain power?

Ironically, I have this same fear about the old bull congressional Dems who were part of the pre-1994 sucktitude, not to mention those who cowardly surrendered to the Bush/GOP bitch-slap brigade. I hope they don't f*ck it up before we can replace them with better democrats.

But what about.... (0.00 / 0)
McCain's deplorable decision making skills? The first quote "nobody in their right mind would trust us to run a government" was spot on because we learned exactly how McCain would lead. Like a crazy psychopathic maverick. Yes, this was a year in which Dems were expected to do well because of the failures of W Bush. But McCain was hanging in there all the way through his choice of Palin as a running mate and his ridiculous response to the economic meltdown. In a lot of ways, his loss had nothing to do with Republican policies, but  with his own stupid decisions.

Dems could have run a tadpole . . . (0.00 / 0)
. . . and won the election. But McCain's choice of Palin ensured that the dems would not only win, but acquire "mandate-like" numbers and really affect change.

But McCain outperformed a generic GOP... (0.00 / 0)
While it might be that there really is just an ideological divide that currently won't let a Republican or Democrat go below 45% in a presidential election, McCain still outperformed the generic GOP in polling.  So even for all his erratic maverickiness, McCain seemed more preferable to 5 or 10% of the electorate than the generic GOP ideologue.

I do think the GOP's problems are based entirely on their inability to govern and McCain didn't help himself by proving himself to be cast in the same mold.  The problem is that if Democrats either misgovern or are cast in the media as having misgoverned people have little choice but to vote for the other party even if they aren't any more capable.  Let's just hope that it doesn't happen or if it does that the GOP has reworked itself into a party led by those who are willing to engage in responsible government.

I hope they do stop sucking.  It would be nice to have a real choice.

I hope they suck forever (4.00 / 1)
and die off.  Maybe then we'd have a "real choice" between a progressive party and a centrist DLC-type party.

I hope they become nothing (4.00 / 1)
but a bad and distant memory, something our grandchildren don't believe really happened when we tell them about it.

"Cool-handed problem solvers" (0.00 / 0)
We've long been the Party of cool-handed problem solvers and we poked fun at the Ds who govern solely on emotion and self interest. Our sober steadiness probably meant more to the middle of the electorate than any position we might have taken on policy. Well, Katrina destroyed that. I know, it wasn't right, wasn't fair, was a media lynching of GWB; all of that is true, but we laid ourselves open for it. When you run as the adults of the group, you don't put the former general counsel of a horsebreeding association in charge of a high profile federal agency.

Would someone there please email this to Sirota and Rosenberg? As I recall, they wanted a Harvard law professor or something as Secretary of Treasury.

That first line is a whopper!` (0.00 / 0)
That first line proves that self-reflection can only go so far!  Since when has a Republican politician ever done anything that wasn't entirely out of self interest?  Since when was fear moved out of the emotion column and into a tool of cool-handed problem solvers?  The GOP hasn't been the party of sober steadiness in my 40 years on the planet!

What Exactly Do They Suck? (0.00 / 0)
What exactly do they suck? Suck is a verb, it is an action word which happens upon an object, when used properly. It is not a state of being, and certainly no republican capable of introspection would apply it in a meaningless context. No, this blogger is making claims that the entire GOP sucks something, and I want to know what.

What is this secret they are keeping? What thing is it that this cabal of self-responsible right-wing do-gooders collectively inhales with the power of all the hot air generated by their talk show overlords? Why isn't the media following this story and why is it only being admitted to now? Where does this sucking happen, at home, in the streets, in the OVAL OFFICE? How much sucking do they do nightly, is it more of a monthly thing or does it just happen sometimes when they are drunk?

Are they sucking in the presence of children? Are these people sucking in the presence of the Lord, are they hiding their Bibles when they all get together in their suck fests and are they seeking the proper forgiveness at the conclusion? Are these isolated incidents that occur when the mood is right, or is this habitual sucking evidence of deeper character flaws infecting an entire group of ideologically aligned persons? For that matter, many people in the military are in the GOP. Are their officers aware their troops are getting around and sucking all the time? These are the people protecting this great nation, after all, and I don't want to hear about our boys being forced to suck on the front lines (leave that to the British Navy).

Could the very idea of being in the GOP lead to all this hot sucking that is going on? Are their federated organizations involved, and are new recruits being inculcated to choose this lifestyle? Just how does one go from being an upstanding, right-minded kid to a YR Youth sucking all over the place for any candidate who needs volunteers? In college, I remember there was a Republican Club, where Dracula and his minions would gather to smoke cigars and regale in stories of a world without anything they don't like. Is this the gateway to becoming a full fledged sucker?

I am very afraid for what this means and inclined to treat it seriously. Tacit admissions from brave bloggers like these are the solution to the problem.
