International Association Of Firefighters To Endorse Dodd

This is a big score for Dodd:

Chris Dodd's campaign is set this week to announce a quite major labor endorsement: the International Association of Firefighters, according to a source familiar with the plans.

The endorsement comes as something as a surprise. Labor insiders had expected the union, one of labor's big endorsements, to go with one of the front-runners.

But the Connecticut senator is an old ally, and authored what's probably the most important piece of legislation in a decade for the IAFF: The 2000 FIRE Act, which channels federal money to local fire departments.

The only union endorsement Kerry won before Iowa in 2003 was the IAFF. They have an impressive political operation that could certainly help Dodd receive some long-awaited traction. However, the endorsement of the international does not necessarily mean the endorsement of the Iowa locals:

Because Iowa labor does not always follow the lead of its national representatives when it comes to supporting candidates, Iowa Independent interviewed Wayne Sawtelle, political director of the IAFF's Iowa organization.

Asked if the Iowa firefighters would follow their national organization's endorsement and support Dodd in the caucuses, Sawtelle said, "I haven't heard."

"We typically have followed what the international's lead is," he continued.  "We do have a meeting later this week...I'm guessing that might be a topic of discussion then."

If this is a blow to anyone else, it is Clinton and Edwards, who had been rumored to be the strongest contenders for the IAFF endorsement. So, I suppose that also makes this good news for Obama and Richardson, both of whom are in double-digits in Iowa.

Does this Really help Dodd? (0.00 / 0)
I hardly think this will help Dodd in any tangible way.  Will other unions follow this endorsement and therefore put there resources behind Dodd.  What momentum will this really give him in the polls.  If anyone is hurt by this, I would say it's Edwards.  He is a distant third(except Iowa) in the money race and the polls, therefore the IAFF endorsement and support is something that would have help to put a dent in the Clinton/Obama momentum.  It says a lot when Edwards doesn't sway the union vote, given that he has the most populist/union friendly message.  It would have been nice for Hillary to have the endorsement, but I don't think it changes he position as the front runner.  The firefighters don't have a beef with her, like they do Giuliani, so she doesn't have worry about them campaigning negatively against her.

Ah, yes (0.00 / 0)
The same union that endorsed DeWine eventhough their locals voted to endorse Sherrod Brown.

For me, this isn't an endorsement of Dodd at all.  It just makes me wonder what Dodd has on Harold A. Schaitberger, General Pres.

Under President Schaitberger's leadership, the IAFF's Political Action Committee, FIREPAC, has grown to more than $3 million and ranks among the top PACs in the nation. His commitment to ensuring that the IAFF supports candidates and lawmakers who are friendly to fire fighters and their issues, regardless of political party, has significantly enhanced the union's power and influence at all levels of politics.

please, they support R's now over Dems even when Dems have supported first responders rights as well as their right to organize.  It just makes no sense unless it's about personal relationships, which it was in DeWine's case from what I've heard from some of the locals in Ohio.
