Reparations for African Americans?

Reflecting on the racial subtext that played out in yesterday's news, and in recognition that this may be my last day here at Open Left, I wanted to share my own blog post on the subject of reparations:

Last day here? Why? (0.00 / 0)
You've had enough of the nasty infighting? Or what's going on?

Pls think twice! Let's not allow uncritical cheerleaders for the frontpagers to take over the discussion. We need commenters like you, who can voice dissent in a reasonable tone!

Because the FP'ers weild the power (4.00 / 1)
and have demonstrated themselves unworthy of it.

Or rather, Paul and David have.  I won't say the same of Matt, Chris, (now absent)Mike, and tremayne.  But Paul and David have shown a blatant, vicious disregard for anyone who doesn't see the world as they do. Paul's behavior in the thread he claims was intended to lay the framework for dialogue was despicable.  Dameocrat's behavior beyond contempt. And worldlymother attacked me for no reason and has yet to back up her claims...

Gray, you've done an amazing job of seeing the discourse dispassionately, and trying to drill down to the heart of the matter, but as it stands - you failed, and so did I... because when the conversation reflects directly on the actions of Paul and David (actions, not ideas), Paul and David can't show up for the conversation.  Sad, but true, and they become abusive in the process.  I don't want to be here for that.

Pls don't make that your last word! (4.00 / 1)
Take a timeout, if necessary, and come back sometime in the future to check if the situation has changed. This seems to be a time where everybody's nerves seem to lay raw. This wasn't always so. And I'm sure happy days will be here again, sometime after the inauguration!

The situation that needs changing (4.00 / 1)
isn't an ideological one - its a personality issue.  And given that my primary purpose here is to be a helpful dissenting voice, if that's not really welcome, then I'm in the wrong place.

And frankly - I can't for the life of me figure out why the inauguration would make things better.  We're supposed to be in the "honeymoon" period - but instead, we've skipped that and gone straight to griping.  Forgive me, but I'm still celebrating having a great, competent (when the heck did that turn into a bad word?  How quickly we forget!), humane president, who is determined to be open and accessible to the American people - including progressives.  Talk about political capital!  President-Elect Obama has plenty with me, and he hasn't expended much of it yet.   I don't want to be here reading all about how he's getting ready to betray everyone before he even gets into office - not when my protestations are derided in the worst possible manner.

And finally - we got an apology out of BarryR, who learned that he was slinging racist remarks.  Paul can't even acknowledge that he (even accidentally) endorsed something racially insensitive. No acknowledgment at all, that someone other than him had a right to be aggrieved.

That's the line in the sand for me.  When we can't respect one another enough to acknowledge that we've breached one another in some way - we really ought not be sharing the same space.

Thank you for your efforts, and best wishes here.

Oh my! (4.00 / 1)
A "reparations" plan that doesn't say that my family, which came here well after slavery; after having their lands taken from them; who spoke no English; were broke and were considered "unemployable" actually "owes" something.

I like it. It's refreshing, original, and I can actually support it.

Although, I believe that the Mormon Church will do it for free.

I don't think blacks should be subject to the Mormon church (0.00 / 0)
and the Mormon church doesn't do DNA testing - though they do do geneology research.

The geneology research is fine, but the tie back to Africa only sometimes gets found through geneology. It only sometimes gets there for dna testing too, but more often, due to record keeping.

Anyway, I'm not going to be around here, so I just wanted to thank you for your comments.

An interesting idea. (4.00 / 1)
I'd be beyond shocked if the Obama administration touched anything even remotely almost kinda sorta glancing on reparations within the next seven years ... but an interesting idea.

I'm not sure that knowing one's DNA will provide any sense of lineage, though. (Or that many European-Americans have such a deep sense of their own, for that matter.) Or how you'd legally define 'black person' for the sake of someting like this. But interesting.

It doesn't provide a sense of lineage (4.00 / 1)
as much as it provides a tie (for most) back to ancestral roots. It's the beginnings of some reclamation of history.
