Caroline Kennedy: No Liberal

This is where Kennedy really shows her colors.

She did not provide answers about other issues that may prove more controversial. Ms. Kennedy did not say whether she supports a cap on local property taxes in New York, something that has sharply divided Democrats and Republicans in Albany. And she did not say whether she supports raising state or federal income taxes for the rich to help balance the budget and pay for government programs.

In her responses, Ms. Kennedy expressed strong support for Israel and said an undivided Jerusalem must be the country's national capital.

New York Governor Patterson just proposed a cruel and regressive budget that closes a massive budget gap without raising taxes on the wealthy, a budget Kennedy endorsed.  I get that Kennedy can't go against Patterson, but refusing to answer a question about Federal income taxes is a pretty clear indication that her instincts are not yet honed enough for a major political seat.  And you can throw in the deeply problematic answer on Jerusalem for good measure, which I see simply as evidence that her campaign is being entirely driven by a center-right aristocratic New York consulting class.

This is why elections are useful, though to be fair, they do have those pesky voter people.

Caroline : Before and After (0.00 / 0)
Caroline has always been on the public stage - but only as a casual bystander, somewhere in the back, only occasionally being picked out by the roving spotlight. In that position, she has been fortunate; the world has only projected onto her the favorable qualities it wants her to possess by virtue of her coming from a (generally) beloved family.

By willingly stepping forward into the limelight, she's tacitly giving the world permission to examine her more closely and the price to her will be the potential loss of that earlier good will.

If I were her, I'd live my life quietly and be satisfied with her parents' reflected glory. It would be win/win for both her and us. She'd keep her sterling reputation and we'd keep our happy, romantic delusions.

She also (4.00 / 3)
doesn't want to roll back Bush's tax cuts for the wealthy:

On tax cuts: Tax cuts created during the Bush White House should be rolled back for wealthy taxpayers. "However, with the economy so fragile, now is not the time," Friedman wrote.

Seems to be more of an Obama Democrat than Ted Kennedy Democrat.

It's a mix. (4.00 / 1)
Lord knows, if we were Republicans, we'd laugh mightily at her claims that we "need to do more to control our northern border."

She's anti-death penalty and pro-gay marriage.  Which is great, except they're not going to be decided by the Senate anytime soon.  On all the economic/trade/health care stuff, she's frustratingly vague (at best).  Saying you'll listen to Dodd and Schumer on regulating Wall Street?

I think it's time for an upstate senator (0.00 / 0)
My personal pick would be Maurice Hinchey since his district might get redistricted out anyway. But not sure of the politics of that one. How much pressure does Patterson feel to appoint someone who is not a white male?

Higgins would be good too.

I understand that it's good politics to kiss up to the Democratic senator from New York, but it shouldn't extend to actual policy.

One of the arguments for her (I suppose) is that her fame might enable her not to do the Wall Street dance.

She Likely Doesn't See The Need To (0.00 / 0)
After all, it's the same folks from whom she fundraised for her brief NYC Schools post.

Obama Democrate, That is more than fine with me (0.00 / 0)
And I am glad that some angry liberals don't get to make the choices here. It is Patterson's choice who it seems is public enemy number one this week.

Oh and she supports gay marriage and stuff.. yea that doesn't matter (no liberal I say!).. except Obama picked warren!!!

Hypocrites.

He used the H word.  I'm sure that's going to close off the argument right there.

I am so tired of the Israel litmus test (4.00 / 2)

Israel is an independent foreign country with its own interests. And I would figure that, by now, every American who wished to take advantage of Israel's Right of Return policy has either already done so, and become an Israeli, or made an equally objective decision not to, and remained an American. It's been sixty years.

So why do we continue to obsess over our political leaders' "support" of Israel? Which country ARE they citizens of, anyway? Why is Israel so flippin' special? Why don't we ask the same questions of our leaders' support for Ireland? Or Mexico? Or Malaysia? Is this stupid hoop ever going to be retired?

Trollrate away. I'm fed up with this crap. The Israel litmus test has become a major obstacle to getting any decent people elected and getting anything done.

Ireland? Mexico? Malaysia? (0.00 / 0)
God didn't "choose" them.  Remember?

Not true (0.00 / 0)
We would seriously consider emigrating there, but my mother-in-law is too sick. Nefesh b'Nefesh is doing a very good business with the North American immigrants to this day.

I would modify what Matt said. I am sure that without the advice of any consultant, Caroline Kennedy thinks that she has to mention an "undivided Jerusalem" to get elected in New York. This is another sign of her being divided from the people upstate.

Caroline Kennedy is also signaling (0.00 / 0)
that she will not be vulnerable to the Jewish voters for whom an undivided Jerusalem is important moving away in any election. Both HRC and Schumer were able to keep them on the Senatorial level.

Why Israel is so important (0.00 / 0)
Because we don't prop over Ireland, Mexico, and Malaysia in the eyes of the international community for forty years. I hope that was a progressive enough answer. Also our support for Israel and its democratic regime hides our support for Saudi Arabia and far less democratic regimes in the neighborhood.

I was against this appointment on moral grounds before, but never spoke out due to my assumptions she would be one of the most liberal senators.  I was willing to pay a price for that.

But to hand out an unearned seat to someone who will just act and vote like everyone else doesn't make any sense to me.

If not Kennedy, who? (0.00 / 0)
I've noticed that someone has tagged a lot of Caroline Kennedy-related posts with Andrew Cuomo even though he is not mentioned.  Who else is allegedly interested?  I know that Nita Lowey has announced that she is not interested and Louise Slaughter endorsed Caroline Kennedy, which I assume is a declaration of non-interest.  I don't think you are going to see interest from House Democrats who have built up position through seniority (like Slaughter giving up the chair of the House Rules Committee or Nydia Velazquez giving up the chair of the Small Business Committee).  If Kennedy had never come up and Cuomo's name had been floated, how would the blogosphere be evaluating him?

It's not just enough to blackball Caroline Kennedy if she is found wanting.  I would like to know if not appointing her results in an even more questionable choice.

I hadn't heard (0.00 / 0)
of the Louise Slaughter endorsement.  That might be a small point in Kennedy's favor.  However, at base, I don't really think this is any of anybody's business unless they are from New York.
