DFA Endorses Geoghegan for Congress

Just got this note in my email box - pretty big news for Better Democrat Tom Geoghegan:

David -

By now, you probably know that President Obama chose Representative Rahm Emanuel for his chief of staff. The race to replace Rahm in Congress has over 10 candidates and the March 3 Special Election is coming up fast.

Last week, we asked DFA members in Illinois to choose, so that our nationwide membership can get behind one candidate and help deliver victory. What we found is that DFA members in the 5th district are split. After the first vote count, two candidates tied for the top spot: Mike Quigley and Tom Geoghegan.

Both candidates are solid progressives who could deliver real results in Congress. But voters can't vote for both of them on Election Day, they will have to choose just one. So we went to the tie-breaker and we have a clear winner.

Tom Geoghegan is the DFA-List endorsed progressive for Congress. With only 12 more days until the election, Tom needs our support to help propel him over the top. Please contribute $25 now to deliver the resources to win.

This is a big endorsement for Tom just 12 days before the election. He's got a real shot in this crowded field. Throw him some change if you got it - it's a worthy cause.

From your lips to Gods ears, of course.

But is there any evidence for this proposition?

the obama administration isn't even bothering to hide it's fascism. i really don't care who dfa endorses. dfa doesn't stand for anything even approaching participatory democracy.

from what I can tell... (0.00 / 0)
progressives win regardless if it's quigley, geoghegan or one of the other progressive candidates like Feigenholtz in this race. I know the netroots has coelesced around Geoghegan, but I'm not sure any blog site or blogger has made a solid case for him that doesn't get side-swiped by certain endorements.

I suppose this begs the question, why should we all be so enamored with this one candidate while Gillebrand's old seat gets much less attention? Does it have everything to do with her possible dem replacement being a BlueDog? Even so, we're in no danger of IL-5 not trending leftward on just about every issue (labor, health, transit...).

Short answer (4.00 / 2)
is that Geoghegan would be a progressive leader, someone who would not just vote in the right way, but push in the right ways.  Given the distribution of seats in the House, and the odds for next election, one seat doesn't make that much difference, but adding the right voice to Congress might.

i totally agree with... (4.00 / 1)
what you say. I'm just not sure the other voices are the quiet types.

take your pick, I like most all of the big names considered for this house race (how often does that happen?). They're mostly bold progressives, none seem to be to the right of Jan Schakowsky.

But i digress. If Geoghegan does become the vocal type who is listened to, then all the power to him. You're right that this is the type of leader we need. Rahm was the vocal type, something I think is necessary in IL-5, but his policies were frustrating at times.
