BlogPac sent out an email today, pushing one last time for people to give to Tom Geoghegan. The election is on Tuesday, so if you are going to give, the time is now. Already, almost $2,000 has been raised.

This is an open thread. Tell the world what is on your mind.

has there been any polling of the race? (0.00 / 0)
I read Fritchey is "the progressives' No. 1 villain." True?

Number two (0.00 / 0)
of the major candidates, Wheleen is worse but  isn't going to win. Fritchey is the worst of the top three (Feingoltz and Quigly being the others).

Blue Dogs are such a pain (4.00 / 1)

  That's what's on my mind.

I still can't wrap my head around the very concept of a blue dog. If you're a young, politically curious person, and you develop a worldview that combines a reverence for corporations, a disdain for labor, an indifference to the general public interest, and a lust for war and force-intensive approaches to resolving problems foreign and domestic... why would you identify with the Democratic Party and pursue your political career within its structure, when there's a Republican Party sitting right there in front of you that's MUCH more in sync with your values?

It's a huge riddle to me. My question is not "why does the national party apparatus gravitate towards these conservative Democrats". My question is "Why does a conservative join the Democratic Party to begin with."

That doesn't really answer the question, though (4.00 / 2)

You can get plenty of corporate money as a Republican. MORE of it, in fact.

I mean, if you're that corruptible, you'll get fast-tracked within the Republican Party, which has no shame about such things.

I don't think... (0.00 / 0)
All the Blue Dogs originally envisioned themselves as corporate shills. In fact, I know a number of prominent "Blue Dog" pols in my area were once raging progressive hippies... Then began shifting rightward to get elected to office in during the 1980s and 1990s. Sad, but true.

Any info on Sarah Feingelholtz? (4.00 / 1)
I found this on wikipedia

Sara was raised in Hollywood Park on Chicago's Northwest side by her mother, Dr. Florence Buky, a community doctor who was widowed when Sara and her brother were young children.

Sara was elected to her first term as state representative of Illinois' 12th District in 1994, unseating a 16-year incumbent. She became one of the state's leading voices on health care expansion and reform. Working with then-State Senator Barack Obama, she was a lead sponsor of the FamilyCare bill, which provides health care to uninsured working parents and their kids. Sara later championed passage of the All Kids bill, which provides every child in Illinois with comprehensive, affordable health care.

Sara's advocacy on behalf of women and children has gained her widespread acclaim from several organizations including the American Cancer Society, the Illinois Maternal & Child Health Coalition, the Jane Addams Senior Caucus, the Families and Children's AIDS Network and Susan G. Komen for the Cure.

Feigenholtz earned her bachelor's degree from Northeastern Illinois University and went on to earn her fellowship degree from the University of Illinois School Of Public Health.

I have a friend... (0.00 / 0)
Originally from Chicago. He LOVES Sara Feigenholtz, especially because she's done a lot on health care. While I haven't thrown my support behind anyone in IL-05, I am breathing a sigh of relief that we have a number of good candidates there who'd make a good Rep. in Congress.

local news (0.00 / 0)
had a good piece on last night about stimulus money going to town's housing authority to develop, finance, and modernize public housing in community.  It was simple, yet showed how the stimulus money was being used to help low-income households lower utility bills, AND create jobs at the same time.  We are not used to seeing news stories in our area about the government helping the community in such a direct way.

And the husband got a job also :)  He is working in the alt.energy industry.  Whew.  We both managed to get jobs - good jobs that we really wanted.  We are extremely fortunate though.  A lot of people looking for jobs around here.

Haitians Look for Shift in Immigration Policy

[MIAMI - Vialine Jean Paul has noticed a change when she drops her 7-year-old daughter off at school each morning in recent weeks. Her daughter, Angela, is not sure that her mother will be back to pick her up.

"She tells me, 'Mommy, good luck,' " Mrs. Jean Paul said, choking back tears. "She asks me, 'Mommy, if you go to Haiti, what will happen to me?' "

Though Angela does not know it, the hopes of tens of thousands of Haitian immigrants and their relatives have become fixed on her mother's fate. Mrs. Jean Paul is one of more than 30,000 Haitian citizens who have been ordered deported from the United States. Her case could be an early test of whether the Obama administration will break with the strict immigration enforcement policies of the Bush administration.

After an estimated 1,000 people were killed in mudslides in Haiti last year, the government asked the United States to grant temporary protected status to Haitian immigrants - relief that was extended when Honduras and El Salvador were hit by similar disasters. The designation is intended for countries in such dire trouble that receiving deportees would undermine their stability.]

Then there's Tom Geoghegan, a strong liberal who has raised a significant amount of money and has been getting lots of support from national bloggers and pundits. He and fellow liberal Charles Wheelan may drive down numbers a bit for the more avowedly liberal Feigenholtz.

that way a vote for tom wouldn't hurt feigenholtz

ps. wheelan is given the 'liberal' label
ha!
