Shut Down the O'Reilly Harassment Machine

Ready to shut down Bill O'Reilly's Harassment Machine?  Think Progress has responded to O'Reilly's ambush of blogger Amanda Terkel by launching a campaign demanding accountability from O'Reilly's corporate advertisers.  This certainly wasn't O'Reilly's first journalistic ambush; in fact, Think Progress counts 40 instances in which O'Reilly has used his henchmen producers to go after everyone from Barack Obama to Bill Moyers to our own Robert Greenwald.

Going after O'Reilly through his corporate sponsors seems like a fitting punitive measure, considering O'Reilly's manic obsession with his imaginary enemy NBC and their parent company GE.  O'Reilly even managed to use the Terkel ambush to continue his assault on his network nemesis, which was particularly strange since Terkel has nothing to do with NBC whatsoever.  (In fact, as Terkel told Keith Olbermann, she derived her initial report from a News Hounds post on O'Reilly's despicable comments regarding the rape of Jennifer Moore.)  It was even odder when O'Reilly tried desperately to make the connection between Terkel, NBC, GE, and Iran in less than one minute!

The bottom line is O'Reilly's thuggish brand of gotcha journalism has got to end, and you can hold O'Reilly to a higher standard by dropping his corporate sponsors a quick note telling them to shut down the O'Reilly Harassment Machine.

You know, I agree with you and (0.00 / 0)
O'Reilly is a despicable person, but are our efforsts really best spent getting upset about Limbaugh and O'Reilly or, just maybe, should we be building a real porgressive movement that someday will not be in thrall to Wall Street and Neo-liberalim.

That is, we need to build a movement that does not need Spector of Nelson or Blanche Lincoln, a movement that elects a President who does not persue neo-liberal polices and does not appoint Summers or Geithner like folks.

I guess I think O'Reilly and Limbaugh are side shows and distractions from real change.  That said, good luck in your efforts.

So the ending of normalized misogynistic harassment isn't (4.00 / 1)
real change? Christ, it's no wonder feminists take issue with so much of the netroots.

What? (0.00 / 0)
Now that is a truly bullshit comment.

Playing games with O'Reilly will not end "normalized misogynist harrassment."

Have fun playing war with o'Reilly.

It's all a game between right wing cable TV and left wing bloggers.  Meanwhile, WOMEN are losing homes and jobs.

Uh, the woman O'Reilly spoke of was raped and murdered. (4.00 / 1)
Sorry, that's worse than losing your job or your home. It's not going to single handedly end the harassment of women and rape of women, really? Thanks much for explaining that to me. But that hardly means that you NORMALIZE harassment of women by looking the other way when a television personality harangues women into submission. See how that works? When a powerful guy on TV can do it, it sets a standard. Get that?
You have no business telling women that they should choose between harassment, their jobs, and their homes. It's not an either/or, and it's damn offensive that you've presented it as such. How fuc*ing dare you and call yourself any sort of progressive?

In the words of Shelby Knox ("The Education of Shelby Knox") (4.00 / 1)
(sort of paraphrasing here) "Why is it that women's rights are always the first to be negotiated away?"

I hear you, (4.00 / 1)
but it's not as if we're NOT "building a real progressive movement that someday will not be in thrall to Wall Street and Neo-liberalism."  Taking on Bill O'Reilly is not the only thing Think Progress, or Open Left, or the author of this post are doing with their time.  They're also fighting for passage of the Helping Families Save Their Homes Act, for drawing down troops in Afghanistan, passing the Employee Free Choice Act, etc.  Your point is a good one, but I think a bit unfair.

At the least you should shut the fuck up! (0.00 / 0)
Then you can better focus your own efforts in building that "porgressive" [sic] movement without wasting your precious time trashing someone who's raising a serious issue about attacks on women.

Addressing women's issues (no, actually, this is MY issue too) is part of building that movement that your post in fact undermines.  Part of building that movement is engaging the vile spewings of the right, not just Wall Street.  Heightened violence against women is a key element of the right's assault, from rape to laughing about rape and murder of women on TV.  By the way, did you catch Olberman laughing last night about a man assaulting a woman in the middle of a courthouse?

Actually, terrorizing a blogger on the street goes beyond spewing by the right.  A fascistic right wing, if you hadn't noticed.  You want to debate that?  Make my day.

When the socialists and union leadership opposed the Nazis in the late 20's and early 30's, they argued that all this stuff about Jews was a diversion from the important economic issues of the day.  They argued that all the way to the gas chambers.

By the way, since you obviously oppose Heller raising this, your posing it as a question ("are our efforts..." or "just maybe...") is pure chickenshit.

interesting... (0.00 / 0)
I filled out the ThinkProgress form, and within minutes I had a reply back from one of those sponsors indicating they were out of the office.  BUT, not to be concerned because,

Your email is being forwarded to my Blackberry. No big deal, just a backup system.

Kind regards,

Anyone else get a reponse like that?

Yes, I did. (0.00 / 0)
They might want to look into that.
