Bayh: I Have No Agenda

by: Chris Bowers

(Via BardinMD). Evan Bayh's new group says it seeks to do things:

"Our group seeks to work collaboratively with the Obama administration and Senate leadership to make sure legislation is crafted in a practical way that will solve people's problems," Bayh said in a statement

Bayh says the new group has strong preferences, considerations, and points of view, and that he wants to make sure their preferences, considerations and points of view are taken into account:

"Our strong preference would be to work with our committee leaders, to work with leadership, to make sure that our considerations are taken into account in the bills that are formed in the committees before they get to the floor so that it would be a cooperative relationship. We would much prefer that. The difficulty comes when things are just handed down without taking into account the point of view of some of us," Bayh explained.

Evan Bayh believes the members of his group can be described in various ways:

"We are not ideologues. We are pragmatic. We are not strident partisans. We care about our country more than our party."

Bayh offers up a founding principle:

In an interview on MSNBC on Wednesday morning, Mr. Bayh said the group had not yet come up with a name. "Call us the Practical Caucus, or what have you," Mr. Bayh said.

Evan Bayh's group includes entirely members of the Senate Democratic caucus:

More: "Leading the new group are Democratic Sens. Evan Bayh of Indiana, Tom Carper of Delaware and Blanche Lincoln of Arkansas... [O]thers joining the group are Sens. Michael Bennet of Colorado, Mark Begich of Alaska, Kay Hagan of North Carolina, Herb Kohl of Wisconsin, Mary Landrieu of Louisiana, Joe Lieberman of Connecticut, Claire McCaskill of Missouri, Ben Nelson of Nebraska, Bill Nelson of Florida, Jeanne Shaheen of New Hampshire, Mark Udall of Colorado, and Mark Warner of Virginia."

However, Bayh also makes it clear that a group that seeks to accomplish things, which has preferences, considerations and points of view that it wants taken into account in the U.S. Senate, whose members can all be described in at least five ways, and whom are all taken from the Democratic caucus of the U.S. Senate, does not actually have an agenda:

Chris Bowers :: Bayh: I Have No Agenda
"We literally have no agenda," Bayh shot back. "How can they be threatened by a group that has taken no policy positions?"

Well Senator Bayh, how can you be for a group, and in fact organize a group, that has no agenda? And anyway, if you don't have an agenda, then how was the group even formed? Was it a random lottery of United States citizens that just happened to select 15 people who were all members of the Democratic caucus in the U.S. Senate? If the group has no agenda, then how was your press release for the group constructed? Was it a dada production where newspapers were cut up, and words were glued randomly to the page? And if the group has no agenda, then should we expect all future votes from the group members to be completely random in nature?

One of the most difficult things to deal with in politics is just how stupid the discourse can be at times. In this case, I'm not even talking about the difference in values, the mountainous problems the country faces, or the enormous institutions that are difficult to influence. In this case, it is just the stupidity that is irksome. That people constantly claim to have no agenda and no ideology is one of the dumbest claims of all, and Bayh's insistence upon it in this case is an all-time whopper. He just formed a new group, presented the group's purpose and goals, and then claimed the group had no agenda. Aaarrsggghhh!!

What is even worse is just how often stupidity like this actually wins.

He's on the defensive! Great! (4.00 / 1)
Let's keep up the pressure... can we find a semi-credible primary challenger to keep him honest?

REID: This deal keeps getting worse all the time!

defensive? (4.00 / 2)
More like on offense with a small army large enough to tilt the scales. But what else is new? It not like we have not been dealing with these people with what seems like forever.

I don't support Bayh but I don't blame him for not offering up a verbal agenda. He doesn't have too. The past actions of his crew speak loud enough.

And to make it worse they are all Obama's kind of people. He loves the centrist Dem and the centrist Republican. He will empower them.

Empower Them? (0.00 / 0)
Obviously, he needs some of these Senators for votes.
And while not perfect on the front, Obama has shown he can pick off different Senators.  He is a much better strategist and tactician than you give him credit.
Don't forget centrist Dems have been around for a while via the DLC.  The DLC is a very weakened institute now, to put it mildly. So, that is good news for the future.

Sadly .. no (4.00 / 4)
can we find a semi-credible primary challenger to keep him honest?

... he's part of a political dynasty .. while Evan's dad was great ... Evan has taken to being like the guy that beat his dad(yes .. that Dan Quayle) .. but things will have to get worse before we will have a good chance of bringing down Bayh .. and even then .. it will take a Lamont type(meaning self-funding to a substantial degree) to possibly beat him

I don't care about beating him.... (4.00 / 2)
The purpose is merely to pressure him and force him to take sides on issues...

I understand ... (4.00 / 1)
but you won't put any pressure on him unless you get a very credible candidate .. one that can beat him .. just look at Snarlin' Arlen's actions since Toomey confirmed that a primary battle royale is on .. in Republican circles .. Toomey is a credible candidate .. one who Arlen is crapping his pants over

Primary challenges ... (4.00 / 3)
are only one way to apply pressure.  In the past, this sort of ridiculousness could have gained him campaign contributions and raised his profile, with little to no down side.

They are on the defensive, despite the resources they have at their disposal, and the accolades from the Villagers. Being called to account is throwing Bayh and the rest for a loop. It's important that it continues, and not just at the national level.

Its time to ask all of them why they are helping Republicans use parliamentary tactics to block the President's agenda, despite widespread public support for those measures.

He is a Ken doll. (4.00 / 6)
His agenda is being a whore for big corporations. He can't expect to gain much from going on TV and saying "My agenda is to be a whore for big corporations," so he is reduced to spewing nonsense like "We care about our country more than our party," and "We have no agenda."

We should pressure Roland Burris (4.00 / 5)
in to joining this group.

sorry to see this name on the list (4.00 / 2)
I'm sorry to see this name, Kay Hagan of North Carolina, on the list. It was muddling centrist crap like this that cost Dole her seat. I don't want to see the seat turn Red because Hagan has some misguided idea of how to gain power in DC.

They call me Clem, Clem Guttata. Come visit wild, wonderful West Virginia Blue

Not surprised at all (4.00 / 2)
to see my senator, Claire McCaskill, in there.  She continues to be a great disappoitment.  Better than Talent, but that is such a low standard.

Stupidity IS The Agenda! (4.00 / 6)
(1) We've had 30 years of stupid politics, which has left us with a huge backlog of major problems.

(2) To actually solve those problems, we would have to take major corrective actions.

(3) These would naturally step on the toes of some very powerful status-quo special interests.

(4) This cannot be.

(5) Ergo, the need for a stupidity caucus, to ensure that the stupidity continues.

(6) The only way to ensure that the stupidity continues is make sure that the process is as stupid as possible, so that no one can even get a sane (much less smart) word in edgewise about the substance.

I don't think the group really exists (0.00 / 0)
For some reason, moderates are happy to go along with Bayh's posturing.  But as we saw in key votes over the last month, they are not voting with Bayh in a bloc.  (CongressMatters was very helpful in pointing this out during one of the big voting days, but I don't have a link.)

So basically it is BS.

It's wonderful example of transparency (0.00 / 0)
Where, once you could say we want to see what's behind the curtain, now they use curtains with stealth technology, and simply deny there's a curtain.
Perhaps there is no agenda is because they operate on a "need to know" basis, and the corporate bosses don't think they need to know the agenda...  Just vote "Yea" when they see the blue flower on the balcony, "nay" when they see the red flower, and whatever they want when there is no flower on the balcony.
