FDR's Economist

From Bloomberg:

FDR Economist Says Obama Should Put Stimulus First

April 2 (Bloomberg) -- When John Maynard Keynes came to Washington in 1934 to persuade President Franklin Roosevelt to spend more to revive the U.S. economy, Roosevelt didn't pay the British economist much attention, Thomas Worsley recalls. He hopes President Barack Obama won't repeat Roosevelt's mistake.

Worsley, then a 23-year-old economist about to take a job in the Treasury Department, says Roosevelt balked at too much economic stimulus, and even allowed conservative Democrats to talk him into reining in federal outlays in 1937.

Now, at 97, Worsley is watching as Obama wrestles with the deepest economic slump since the Great Depression and is coming under fire from critics at home and abroad over his spending plans. Ultimately, Worsley said, only World War II delivered the U.S. from its hard economic times, and he advises Obama to keep pumping money into the economy.

"That vindicated Keynes's argument," Worsley said during an interview at his brick townhouse in Alexandria, Virginia, where his framed economics degrees from the University of Virginia, including a doctorate, are displayed. "You have to get enough spending going to get private enterprise interested in taking chances on investing."

Lawrence H. Summers, one of President Obama's top economic advisers, collected roughly $5.2 million in compensation from hedge fund D.E. Shaw over the past year and was paid more than $2.7 million in speaking fees by several troubled Wall Street firms and other organizations.

Any questions?

Just that the more you hear people claim they are bringing change... (4.00 / 3)
...the more you find out that at least in some things they don't really change at all.

Regards,

Never before in all our history have these forces been so united against one candidate as they stand today. They are unanimous in their hate for me-and I welcome their hatred. - FDR

I've got a question. (0.00 / 0)
If humanity's natural aggregate demand is satiable, why should the government step in to cure that "disease"?

Because (4.00 / 4)
There's a lot of suffering at the bottom end of that demand equation, from those would prefer to have more but simply cannot.

For many the level of demand they can economically create is below the threshold of deprivation.  So they can survive on plain rice and tap water, but should we just leave them to that?

Banks are on a capital strike (4.00 / 2)
The Obama administration will figure it out eventually, just like FDR and his administration did.

isn't this FDR's myth vs. Obama's reality? (0.00 / 0)
First of all this guy is praising Obama's policy of stimulus which is supported by Summers.

I see that Treasury Secretary Morgenthua opposed stimulus.  His predecessor was a Republican businessman who inherited his wealth.  Of course Keynes himself got rich on speculations.

So what is the point here?  I hate Summers, but are comparing myth to reality?

He Says Obama's Doing The Right Thing With The Stimulus (4.00 / 1)
and needs to keep on doing more of it.

It doesn't look like he was pressed at all on whether Obama was actually doing enough.

Once again, we are at the mercy of a sub-par press corps, even when they do turn up something interesting and noteworthy.

dhinmico would call this a cheap shot and scream for you to "delete this diary!"

He would also call you a 'conspiracy theorist", and probably get you banned!

It's boring and useless.

I don't git it. Am I missin' somethin'? - G. W. Bush

obama's supposed threat to the bankers he serves ... (0.00 / 0)
... where he supposedly told the bankers that his government stands between them and the pitch forks and is barak bs.  They do not stand between the banksters and the pitch forks, they are not providing security for these scum bags ... at least I don't think so but maybe we shouldn't put it past their government providing them that service ... the banksters pay private security provides that.  what obama is doing ... and what he should have told them ... is standing between these wall street criminals and jail.

And standing real strong ... for them.

I'm sorry, I must have missed the part of Obama's term where he was struggling with deciding whether or not to pass a stimulus or whether or not to balance the budget soon.

The thing is, you guys would have Keynes head on a pike along with FDR's if you were around then. I don't know who gives out the most absurd revisionism. Progressive views of FDR, or Conservative views of Reagan.

Not So Much (4.00 / 3)
My view of FDR, along with most progressives, is that he had mostly good ideas, but he dithered around and listened to the conventional wisdom of the day too much, which weakened his program, most notably leading to the recession of '37/'38.

In short: the standard history.

My fear--so far born out by Obama's actions--is that Obama hasn't learned the lessons of history, and is needlessly repeating FDR's mistakes, while adding some new ones of his own, such as listening to the likes of Summers.

Now, if you have some evidence to the contrary, we can debate it.

But if all you've got is some lame-ass fact-free Versailles narrative, we've heard it all before, and really don't need to hear it again.

You're afraid Obama hasn't learned the lessons of history... What the fuck are you afraid of? He's going to balance the budget? He's going to kill off new deal programs?

I mean, this vague, "conventional wisdom of his day" is really just your own way of avoiding criticizing policy and pushing forth "fact-free Versailles narrative."

This Bad Faith Argument Routine Is Really Getting Old (4.00 / 3)
You know what the lessons are, particularly as I just restated perhaps the principle one: the failure to spend big enough, long enough to get the economy back on track.

You have no answer to that, because there is no answer to that.
