Mother's Day For Peace

Paul Rosenberg :: Mother's Day For Peace
GLORIA STEINEM: Mother's Day really was in its origin an antiwar day, an antiwar statement. Julia Ward Howe was sickened by what had happened during the Civil War, the loss of life, the carnage, and she created Mother's Day as a call for women all over the world to come together and create ways of protesting war, of making a kind of alternate government that could finally do away with war as an acceptable way of solving conflict.

VANESSA WILLIAMS: Arise then...women of this day!
Arise, all women who have hearts!
Whether your baptism be of water or of tears!

FELICITY HUFFMAN: Say firmly:
"We will not have questions answered by irrelevant agencies,
Our husbands will not come to us, reeking of carnage,
For caresses and applause.

FATMA SALEH: Our sons shall not be taken from us to unlearn
All that we have been able to teach them of charity, mercy and patience.
We

FELICITY HUFFMAN: We

ALFRE WOODARD: We, the women of one country,
Are too tender of those of another country
To allow our sons to be trained to injure theirs."
From the bosom of the devastated Earth a voice goes up with
Our own. It says: "Disarm!

VANESSA WILLIAMS: Disarm!

FATMA SALEH: Disarm!
The sword of murder is not the balance of justice."

ASHRAF SALIMIAN: Blood does not wipe out dishonor,
Nor violence indicate possession.

CHRISTINE LAHTI: As men have often forsaken the plough and the anvil
At the summons of war,
Let women now leave all that may be left of home
For a great and earnest day of counsel.

FELICITY HUFFMAN: Let them meet first, as women, to bewail and commemorate the dead.

ALFRE WOODARD: Let them solemnly take counsel with each other as to the means
Whereby the great human family can live in peace...

FATMA SALEH: Each bearing after his own time the sacred impress, not of Caesar,

VANESSA WILLIAMS: But of God-
In the name of womanhood and humanity,

ASHRAF SALIMIAN: I earnestly ask
That a general congress of women without limit of nationality,

ALFRE WOODARD: May be appointed and held at someplace deemed most convenient

FELICITY HUFFMAN: And at the earliest period consistent with its objects,

VANESSA WILLIAMS: To promote the alliance of the different nationalities,

CHRISTINE LAHTI: The amicable settlement of international questions,

FATMA SALEH: The great and general interests of peace.

Peace, yes, but not at any price (4.00 / 1)
I know it's Mother's Day, and everybody's got a mother, but having spent yesterday at a Democratic State Committee meeting halfway across Arizona, I had to catch up on my weekend Paul and several juicy comments threads without much of a chance to contribute. So....

I'd like a little more war, please. Just a little. (Maybe it's because I got a chance at a caucus meeting to listen to Rep. Raul Grijalva speak at length for the first time, and answer questions from other progressives. I tell you, from a distance AZ may seem like the ass end of the universe as far as political maturity goes, but I'd put this guy up against the best that the country has ever produced. Even Paul would have been inspired, I think. Top drawer all the way.)

Anyway, I hope there's more coming later, Paul. My own mother is gone, God rest her, but I think she'd prefer the struggle to flowers today, just as Ms. Howe did in her own time.

It sounds like you got a nice (4.00 / 1)
re-charge at the event this weekend. That's something we all sure need from time to time. Otherwise, it's hard to stay positive and keep your energy and determination going, especially in these times. I hope you will take that good energy and spread it around.

I did, and to the best of my ability, I will. We have a lot of friends and family, as it turns out. It makes a difference.

I am in earnest -- I will not equivocate -- I will not excuse -- I will not retreat a single inch -- AND I WILL BE HEARD.

Jeezus, what an ass that guy is. (0.00 / 0)
