Run The Anti-Sotomayor Republican Attacks on Spanish Language Media

Do you think that Republicans would run ads calling Sotomayor "not that bright," a "recipient of preferential treatment most of her life," and "racist" on Spanish language radio?

I seriously doubt it. But we should.

This is a perfect branding moment when the uglier side of the conservative movement and Republican activist base is coming out in the open. As such, we need to take the smears Republicans are currently throwing at Sotomayor and run them as paid advertisements on Spanish language radio and television from now through Sotomayor's confirmation. This is an opportunity to push Republican numbers among Latinos below 30% for a generation, and we need to jump on it.

Here is a rough draft of an ad campaign (it would need to be translated into Spanish, obviously):

Judge Sonia Sotomayor grew up in a housing project. Her mother was a nurse, and her father, a tool and dye worker, died when Sonia was only nine. And yet Republicans think she has been given preferential treatment all her life.

She graduated second in her class at Princeton University, and is a member of the American Philosophical Society. And yet, Republicans have said Sonia Sotomayor isn't very smart.

She has served as a judge longer than anyone currently on the Supreme Court did before they were nominated, and yet Republicans argue Sotomayor was only chosen because her family was Puerto Rican.

Why do Republicans really oppose Sonia Sotomayor? Call Republican Senate leader Mitch McConnell and tell him to support her historic nomination.

No one is better at hurting Republican chances among minority groups than Republicans themselves. We need to take their own anti-Sotomayor message directly to the Latino community for them, and let the community decide what it thinks about the Republican Party as a result. I also want Mitch McConnell to have to answer for the attacks on Sotomayor from conservative media. It is a nice opportunity to forge a wedge between the Republican Senate and conservative media.

I'd like to see Republicans complain about these ads, too. If they really thought their attacking Sotomayor in such racially charged ways was a good idea, they should have nothing to complain about.

Republicans really need to pay a heavy, long-term political price for these attacks. Let's make sure that they do.

Josh Marshall has a video of Tancredo calling La Reza the KKK.

http://tinyurl.com/mzfdfy

"Former Rep. Tom Tancredo (R-CO), who spent his career in Congress calling for a moratorium on immigration, appeared on CNN to lambaste Sotomayor for belonging to a group whose name would translate as "The Race," made the false claim that La Raza has the motto, "All for the race, nothing for the rest," and bashed it as being "a Latino KKK without the hoods or the nooses." - TPM

This should be relatively easy with YouTube.

Jeez (0.00 / 0)
If La Raza is the KKK because it's about race then the NAACP must be the KKK because it's about race too.

John McCain would love to send your kids to war.

So how do we do it? .. (4.00 / 3)
The one problem with the lefty blogostan .. is that there doesn't seem to be enough cross-racial group pollination .. and this is exactly what I am talking about .. do you, Chris .. or does Mike have any connections with La Raza? .. or any similiar type groups?  Can La Raza even take a stand favoring a party(or are they limited to issues)?  I'd have to believe they aren't too happy with Tancredo(or Republicans) right now .. we really do need to have more cooperation with the interest groups(if you want to call it that) that make up the Democratic coalition

I do have a connection at La Raza (4.00 / 6)
I have been in connection recently. I will see if there is any interest.

Excellent suggestion! (4.00 / 2)
Good thinking, Chris. I'd love to see/hear that ad. It would be especially fun here in Texas for the gubernatorial and Senate race next year............

I do think (4.00 / 1)
your proposed political campaign is extremely good and effective.

BRAVO! (4.00 / 2)
The opponet's words often make good political hay, but for us, the corruption, lies, greed and prejudice of our adversaries makes this avenue especially attractive. Now if we can get some attention from mainstream dem financeers, this will have lasting benifits.

Government by organized money is no better than government by organized mob..... FDR

I'd change the action (4.00 / 5)
These ads should be part of a registration drive by state parties. The comm should be a ratchet back effort much like the success of George Bush don't care about black people while there is on the ground organizing during the fight. This also provides a needed counter-weight to the GOP incentive to drag this out as long as possible.

For state parties with significant and/or crucial latino populations, such a program would probably have the best ROI of any spending other than online.

That is a good idea (0.00 / 0)
Branding plus much needed voter registration.

Good stuff!

Target Republican senators (4.00 / 6)
I wouldn't have them call Mitch McConnell. Most regular people aren't going to call the Minority Leader, but they might call their state's senators. Have Texans put the heat of La Raza on Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison (who probably will quit the Senate to run for governor) and Sen. John Cornyn.  In Arizona, have them call Sen. Jon Kyl and John McCain. In Nevada, have them call Sen. John Ensign. In Florida, have them call Sen. Mel Martinez.

Good idea (4.00 / 1)
It sounds strange to write this, but I kind of wish there was a Republican Senator in California. Then we could target him / her, too.

Then again, mostly I am glad there is no Republican Senator from California.

Make Tancredo, Newt y Rush El Voz de la GOP (4.00 / 2)
Many older Mexican Americans in South Texas, particularly around San Antonio, are pretty conservative but they grew up voting for Henry B. Gonzales in the '50s, '60s and '70s. This slandering of Sonia Sotomayor might bring many back to the Dems or at least cause them to rethink the Repubs.

more specifically (0.00 / 0)
This should target Republican Senators who are opposed or are likely to vote against her confirmation.  Sen Cornyn, to his credit, actually did repudiate some of the more ridiculous charges against Sotomayor from GOP leaders Rush and Newt.  It would be way too easy for Cornyn's staff to just respond with "he stood up for Sotomayor very publicly and repudiated those attacks".

John McCain <3 lobbyists

Via google translation (0.00 / 0)

Oh goodness (4.00 / 5)
This is why we don't use google translator.

Kos had a rec list dairy that questioned whether Sotomayor was an (4.00 / 1)
"intellectual powerhouse" because the diarist had argued before her and "had the sense during my arguments that she does not always focus on the most important aspect of a case:"
http://www.dailykos.com/storyo...
(Nevermind that this individual didn't manage to make particularly incisive arguments within the space of one short-ish diary, his analysis was given sufficient credence to land on the rec list.)

And Rosen's piece was at TNR, which still (somewhat fantastically)fancies itself a left leaning outlet.

I'm not entirely sure we should minimize the breadth of racism and sexism, as it relates to Sotomayor, by pinning it all on the Republican activist base.
