Rightwing Terrorism Turns Deadly: Abortion Provider Dr. George Tiller Murdered at Wichita Church

From Cara at Feministe:

Oh my fucking god.  I just learned via Matttbastard on Twitter that Dr. George Tiller was shot dead as he was walking into his Sunday morning church services.

Dr. Tiller was one of the few late-term abortion providers in the country.  He had previously been shot, his clinic burnt down, harassed by ideological anti-abortion attorney generals, and threatened with death countless times.  We've written about his many trials and tribulations here numerous times. Still, Dr. Tiller continued to provide abortions to women who desperately needed them, to save their own lives or health, or due to tragic fetal deformities.  He put the health of women above his own life.

And now he is dead.

There is no word on whether or not there is a suspect in custody as of yet.  I'll update as soon as I know.  I've only just heard.  And I'm in total shock.  This is the first time an abortion provider has been murdered in over a decade.  I have friends who work in abortion clinics.  This is terrosism.  And right now, I just don't have the words.

Note: A suspect has been arrested, according to KansasCity.com:

Suspect arrested in connection with slaying of abortion provider George Tiller
BY STAN FINGER AND JOE RODRIGUEZ
The Wichita Eagle

The suspect in this morning's fatal shooting of George Tiller is in custody, according to emergency dispatchers.

Authorities have yet to release more information about the arrest. Wichita police have scheduled a 4 p.m. news conference to discuss the case.

Tiller, 67, was shot just after 10 a.m. in the lobby of Reformation Lutheran Church at 7601 E. 13th, where he was a member of the congregation. Witnesses, a city official and a police source confirmed Tiller was the victim.

Police had said they were looking for white male who was driving a 1990s powder blue Ford Taurus with Kansas license plate 225 BAB. The vehicle is registered to an owner in Merriam, which is in the Kansas City area.

Clearly, the resurgence of rightwing violence was expected by many observers once Republicans lost power.  But that does not lessen the horror of this tragic murder.

Paul Rosenberg :: Rightwing Terrorism Turns Deadly: Abortion Provider Dr. George Tiller Murdered at Wichita Church
From Huffington Post:

Tiller has been among the few U.S. physicians performing late-term abortion, making him a favored target of anti-abortion protesters. He testified that he and his family have suffered years of harassment and threats. His clinic was the site of the 1991 "Summer of Mercy" protests marked by mass demonstrations and arrests. His clinic was bombed in 1985, and an abortion opponent shot him in both arms in 1993.

Tiller's clinic also provided group and individual counseling, as well as chaplain and funeral services for people who were grieving....

Tiller remained prominent in the news in recent years, in part because of an investigation begun by former Kansas Attorney General Phill Kline, an abortion opponent.

Prosecutors had alleged that Tiller had gotten second opinions from a doctor who was essentially an employee of his, not independent as state law requires, but a jury in March acquitted him of all 19 misdemeanor counts against him.

Abortion opponents also questioned then-Gov. Kathleen Sebelius' ties to Tiller before the Senate confirmed her this year as U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary. Tiller donated thousands of dollars to Sebelius over the years.

Of course we can expect the vast majority of those responsible for whipping up murderous hatred toward abortion providers to deplore the inevitable results of their actions.  But it's going to take real political leadership to avoid a growing spiral of political violence, which is the one remaining thing that the right has a real advantage in.

UPDATE: FAMILY STATEMENT:

Dan Monnat and Lee Thompson, Dr. George Tiller's attorneys, issued the following statement today at the request of Mrs. Jeanne Tiller, the Tiller's four children and ten grandchildren:

"Today we mourn the loss of our husband, father and grandfather.  Today's event is an unspeakable tragedy for all of us and for George's friends and patients.  This is particularly heart wrenching because George was shot down in his house of worship, a place of peace.

We would like to express the family's thanks for the many messages of sympathy from our friends and from all across the nation.  We also want to thank the law enforcement officers who are investigating this crime.

Our loss is also a loss for the City of Wichita and women across America.  George dedicated his life to providing women with high-quality heath care despite frequent threats and violence. We ask that he be remembered as a good husband, father and grandfather and a dedicated servant on behalf of the rights of women everywhere."

An inner ring, low to moderate income, aging and virtually all-white community, on the Kansas side of the stateline and a suburb of Kansas City, Missouri, it is home to several large fundamentalist christianist churches and has resisted all sorts of movements toward social inclusion and tolerance.  It is not surprising that the suspect is from this community:

Apparently, for some in this country, we're back to Old Testament rules.

Have you actually read the Old Testament? (4.00 / 2)
God says if a man suspects his wife of adultery, he should bring her to the temple and He will provide an abortion for free.

Back then the male supremacism was more overt, less apologetic. They didn't hem and haw and bullshit about it like they do now.

Again, the vast majority of people (0.00 / 0)
who believe in significant restrictions on abortion are not motivated by "male supremacism".

However, the accusation itself does appear to be a handy tool for some in the pro-choice crowd, who are desperately looking for an excuse not to think the issue through.

now that there is an adult in the wh there will be a plan to seek out the rw hit squads from under their hiding places (rocks) so as to make america a safer place for those that obey the law of the land rather then taking the law into their own hands and committing similar acts of violence as the murder of dr tiller. the left can't even protest without the gop attacking their patriotism but the right has the cons permission to murder with legal impunity with a wink and a nod, the party of personal responsibility is again out of the mainstream american thought and reason.

Terrorism, terrorism, terrorism. (4.00 / 8)
This needs to be repeated over and over.  Shooting someone because you don't agree with what they are (lawfully) doing in order to terrorize others not to do the same -- that's terrorism.

Right wingers need be made to label it as such too, whether they want to or not.

The terrorist wing of the anti-choice movement has committed an act of domestic terrorism.

Republicans can't fix our country; they're too busy saddlebacking.

this is just silly (0.00 / 0)
every group has its radicals.  every group has people with no self control.  That's the price we all pay for activism.  There were rogue ACCORN activist who violated the law and got caught.  Does this mean the all of ACCORN is bad?  Should we label every Muslim a terroist just because of a few fanaticals?  Do all right wingers want to kill doctors because they don't believe in what they do?  NO NO NO.....there is no excuse for this behavior however, when we call for everyones head on a platter for the deeds of one bad person, we jeopardize every instutition that is out there trying to do some good weather your for or against their beliefs.

First you say "radical" when what you mean is "extremists," and the subject was violence.

Then you add a whole new dimension of confusion by talking about "rogue ACORN activist who violated the law and got caught."  But they weren't radicals, extremists or violent.  They were cheating slackers, trying to rip off ACORN for work they didn't do.

All your confusion aside, however, there's a solid core of confusion underneath everything personal you've brought to the mix:  Even if we admit, for the sake of argument, that potentially out-of-control extremists may be anywhere, the empirical fact is that such extremists are not randomly distributed.  They are far more common on the right, and there's all sorts of evidence that this is the case.

Suspect Recognized As A Protestor At Tiller's Church (4.00 / 1)
According the the story just on NPR, a reporter in Wichita said that fellow parishioners at Tiller's church recognized him from earlier protests there.  It is becoming clear he was a part of of the militant anti-abortion culture in Kansas that was driven in part by the fanatic prosecutor, Phil Kline, whose office inspired anti-abortionists for years.

We will know more soon.  Press conference underway now.

From Cecile Richards, Planned Parenthood (0.00 / 0)
The entire Planned Parenthood family is deeply saddened by the murder of Dr. George Tiller. While he was not a Planned Parenthood provider, he was an integral part of our community and his loss is felt by all of us. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family and those close to him who are suffering a personal tragedy.

Dr. Tiller was the epitome of high quality medical care underscored by deep compassion for his patients. He provided critical reproductive health care services, including abortion services to women facing some of the most difficult medical circumstances. He was continually harassed by abortion opponents for much of his career - his clinic was burned down, he was shot by a health center protestor, and he was recently targeted for investigation only to be acquitted by a jury just a few months ago. None of this stopped George Tiller from his commitment to providing women and their families with compassionate care that others were unwilling to offer.

His death is an enormous loss for the patients who relied on him, his dedicated staff, the medical community and for women and their families across America.

Napolitano vindicated... (4.00 / 5)
The BS "outrage" over that DHS report that linked pro-lifers to potential violence certainly should be turned back on the right wingers now that a supposed "pro-lifer" has committed the ultimate violence in the name of their right wing cause.

We should be screaming this to the hills... The administration won't (understandably), but, that is certainly our job...

Tiller was also a frequent target of our friend Bill O'Reilly... he certainly has some culpability in this situation, and we need to continue to highlight the calls to violence by the right wing media.

O'Reilly Has Been Smearing Tiller For Three Years Now. (4.00 / 4)
I'd like to see how he's going to dance around this tragedy Monday on his program. O'Reilly was the most prominent figure in the media that was leading the witch hunt after Tiller.

Strong Statement onhow violent anti abortion language has led to this murder by NY NARAL (4.00 / 5)
Statement from Kelli Conlin, President of NARAL Pro-Choice New York on
Assassination of Dr. George Tiller

NARAL Pro-Choice New York is reeling from news of today's tragic assassination of Dr. George Tiller.

A dedicated health care provider who never wavered in his commitment to providing abortion services and other reproductive health care to women and their families - even after surviving previous acts of violence against him -- Dr. Tiller was slain for doing the work that we pledge to protect every day: ensuring the right and ability of women to make decisions that are best for themselves and their families.

President Obama has called on leaders of both sides of the debate on whether women should have the right to legal abortion to come together to find "common ground."

But it is cold-blooded, vicious actions like today's assassination that make it hard for those of us in the pro-choice community to find common ground with those on the other side. It is lawless, violent behavior like this that makes us fear for our lives and our families. When they sit down across from us, they have no reason to believe that we come to the table with violent intentions.  Today is a brutal reminder that we are not privileged to have the same sense of security.

We therefore call upon the leaders of the anti-abortion movement to go beyond condemning today's action to actually committing to control and measure their own irresponsible and incendiary rhetoric and actions.

When these anti-abortions leaders stalk us, harass us and label physicians "murderers," they fan the flames to create a setting where abhorrent acts such as today's can transpire.

Our heart and our compassion go out to Dr. Tiller, his family, friends and colleagues.  Our thoughts are also with all the other providers across this country who do their work in the face of violent opposition. We will continue to stand with them as they serve the women who need them every day.

These Are Scary Times (4.00 / 3)
When Obama won, I think we all knew there was a chance the fringe of this country's right wing would resort to violence. We all suspected it would be racially motivated and not about abortion, mind you, but what happened today is a reflection of the fact there are a lot of frightened, overzealous people who honestly believe the country is coming down around their ears. Obama's "gaffe" during the primary campaign was an honest statement: in times like these frightened, overzealous people will clutch to their guns and their religion. It's pitiful and terrifying all at the same time.

Problem is FAR worse than acknowledged (4.00 / 2)
In the last two years there have been several right-wing killers:

Joshua Cartwright -- shot two cops in Florida
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/...

Richard Poplawski --shot three cops in Pittsburgh
http://www.salon.com/opinion/k...

Timothy Dale Johnson --shot Chair of Arkansas Democratic Party
http://www.todaysthv.com/news/...

Jim Adkisson -- shot a Unitarian church screaming "Kill Liberals!"
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/...

These killings (and by no means is this list comprehensive) all happened recently.  (That's to say nothing of the long history of right-wing violence in this country that proceeds it: William Crutchfield, Russell Arthur Henderson, Eric Rudolph, Timothy McVeigh, and so on going all the way back to the KKK).  Can anybody name a single left-wing terrorist act in the United States since the 70s?

Hysteria is explicitly endorsed in right-wing media.  It's coming out the mouths of Ann Coulter, and Glenn Beck, and Michael Savage, and Rush Limbaugh and Bill O'Reilly, and Fox News, and countless other right-wing commentators. Many in the opposition view the left as an existential threat and actively sympathize with violence committed against us.  Now the right-wing is becoming marginalized and desperate.  These killings have been happening on a fairly regular basis but nobody is looking at the pattern.  Nobody is looking at the clear connection between the continuous deluge of righteous hate from right-wing media and the domestic terrorism committed by the consumers of this media.
