Take Action: Only Three Votes Needed to Defeat the $100 Billion War Supplemental

We're on the verge of a huge progressive victory for the antiwar movement. Jane Hamsher estimates we have 36 of the 39 Democratic votes needed to defeat the war supplemental bill in the House tomorrow--which leaves only three to go!  We must make sure our Reps know we oppose the war, and remind them that everyone in the House in 2007 signed the pledge not to vote for more war funding unless there are provisions for troop withdrawal.

According to Hamsher, here are the vets who are "leaning No" and could use a boost of antiwar support:

  • Steve Cohen
  • Keith Ellison
  • Chakah Fattah
  • Mike Honda
  • Ann Kirkpatrick
  • Doris Matsui
  • Ed Markey
  • Jim McDermott
  • Gwen Moore
  • Jared Polis
  • Jan Schakowsky
  • Mike Thompson
  • John Tierney
  • Mel Watt
  • Anthony Weiner
Brave New Films has put together a series of messages from Director Robert Greenwald, targeting specific states where pressure is needed most: Massachusetts, New York, Maine, Colorado, Connecticut, Michigan, Vermont, Virginia, Texas, California, and Arizona.  If you live in one of those states or know someone who does, forward them the appropriate video and ask them to call Congress: (202) 224-3121.

If they have already agreed to vote "No," be sure to say thanks for taking a stand against the war.  You can also give Congress a call and see how Dems are leaning through FireDogLake's Whip Tool.

And for all of you on Twitter, Bob Fertik at Democrats.com has some quick messages for you to Re-Tweet key members of Congress:

Why is it...? (0.00 / 0)
Why is it that Democrats in congress find it so easy to stand up to Democratic presidents but aways scamper away in fear with Republican presidents?

Anyway, good news.

Store Robbery (0.00 / 0)
I think it's okay because war is so depressing! Why don't they avert their attention to national issues? Crime rate is increasing (if they don't notice)! Robbery, for example, is frightening ordinary citizens.  Store robbery, or small scale robberies, hasn't skyrocketed during this recession the way it was assumed they would.  This doesn't mean store robbery doesn't happen, as payday loan stores are the preferred targets these days, and a recent incident in California went far more awry than previous incidents.  A man robbed a payday lender at gunpoint, and then when police were on their way, he grabbed an elderly customer and forced him into a vehicle at gunpoint.  Then, a car chase ensued, as the man sped off starting in Lake Forest, and flying through the Laguna area at speeds upward of 120 mph.   He was captured, and will need short term loans for a lawyer for his store robbery defense.

Rahm is telling Repubs if they vote for it, Dems won't challenge them in 2010 -- (0.00 / 0)

... Rahm did make the deal with Thaddeus McCotter to go easy on him in 2010 (even though he's one of the DCCC's top targets and best opportunities to take a Republican seat).  The White House was going to pass flu preparedness anyway, so they were only going to "give up" what they already intended to as some kind of weird cover.

But it looks like they floated the story too soon -- word has it Cantor flipped his shit, the deal fell apart and Rahm is back to square one. ...
