Morning No: No Advil

- Michael Jackson: still not risen.

- SCOTUS says, no, you can't strip search 13 year olds on suspicion of Advil possession, but the situation throws a harsh light on the arbitrary, punitive nature of zero-tolerance laws.

- The Iranian regime has made peaceful change impossible and has likely suffered a mortal blow to its legitimacy.

- New flu cases in the US now are mainly H1N1 swine flu, as opposed to other seasonal types, but the good news is that it may be harder to catch than other flus.

- "About 50,000 adolescents and young adults aged 13 to 24 were living with the virus that causes AIDS in 2006, but nearly half of them didn't know they were HIV infected, according to the CDC." This is clearly a situation that calls for more abstinence education. I'm looking at you, Alexia Kelley.

- GE' CEO, Jeffrey Immelt blasts the Chamber of Commerce for paying to run ads against health reform.

- As Chris says, "The worst thing about Republican sex scandals is hearing the details." In the case of Gov. Mark Sanford, the saddest thing is that fell in love.

- Oregon law to women: if you were drunk, it wasn't rape.

- George Will accidentally says something right about health care.

- Yes, Sen. Baucus, yes it was a mistake to leave single-payer off the table.

- Juan Cole provides a good report of news on Iran, also saying that the protestors are going to try to rally again in the bazaars. However, what with everything else going on, he would like to bring to our attention the recent upsurge in violence and bombings in Iraq, which has killed around 200 people in just the last week.

- How do you know it's true that the corporations have taken over America? Because apparently what the members of the House Financial Services Committee mean by 'too big to fail' is 'too important to my portfolio to fail'.

- The town of Moberly, MO, will pay $2.4 million and suspend the use of tasers after an incident where a 23 year old man died after being tasered three times during a traffic stop. When it goes to court, it'll be interesting to see if a similar moratorium is enacted following the death of a Utah man who was tasered last Tuesday when his wife called 911 for assistance in handling what appeared to be a mental health breakdown.

- He is haunted forever, and had to share it around.

Morning Moe: VIC still missing, since 365 days now (0.00 / 0)
A year later, search for Moe continues
It has been a year since Moe went missing, but the search for the celebrity chimp goes on.
...
Moe went missing from Jungle Exotics, a Devore company that houses animals and provides them to the entertainment industry, on June 27, 2008.

In the weeks following, there was a full-scale search for the primate, who was raised by the Davises in West Covina, by the couple, the owners of Jungle Exotics and others.
...
McCasland said the search will continue until there is closure.

"We are not giving up, because right now we have more questions than answers," he said.

Good points by Amanda about Sanford, btw (0.00 / 0)
Yes, it really is disturbing that society seems to increasingly hold the position that "elderly" people should have no love life, and especially no sex. What kind of an inhumane and unrealistic attitude is growing there?

And a good argument about Sanford not being in a good position to demand privacy. Made me think twice. Yes, indeed, if Sanford didn't respect other peoples' intimate communications in his religiously motivated drive to expose adulterers in the past, he sure doesn't have the right to complain about his emails becoming the focus of mediaattention now. However, I think liberals should show more decency and not engage in this, as long as the communication isn't really evidence for any political wrongdoings...

44 plus $6,000 (0.00 / 0)
Sad story.

Monica Conyers, the 44 year-old wife of Congressman John Conyers (who has served in the US House for 44 years) plead guilty to bribery charges in Detroit.  The Detroit City Council member took multiple packages of cash (2 of them at $3,000 each) for her vote on a $1.2 billion sewer processing contract.  She can be sentenced for up to 60 months but is expected to receive a sentence of around 2 years.

John Conyers was not involved and conspicuously did not use his influence as Chairman of the House Judiciary Committe to try to affect the FBI in this case.  The Conyers have been married for 16 years.

Details are reported in the Detroit Free Press (freep.com).  The basic story can also be found at the Atlanta Journal Constitution (ajc.com).

"conspicuously did not use his influence"? (0.00 / 0)
Now, that would have been too much chuzpe if he would have tried that! So, I think using "conspicuosly" in that sentence isn't really fiitted, except if you think Conyers isn't only a crook, but a total fool, too...

Conspicuously (4.00 / 1)
The reporter for the Detroit Free Press was genuinely surprised that John Conyers did not make phone calls or pull strings to call off the FBI investigation.  I guess he/she expected the Congressman to be a crook.  Surprise.  He wasn't.  Surprise.  His wife, unfortunately, is a crook.

I'm reminded of the aging but well liked Harry Helmsley who had nothing to do with his wife Leona's tax avoidance schemes.  Leona Helmsley and Monica Conyers wind up in jail.  Harry Helmsley and John Conyers wind up alone and sad.
