Palin to Resign On July 26th

In a certain sign that she is first looking to cash in, and then run for President in 2012, Sarah Palin will not seek re-election in 2010.

A Republican source close to her political team told CNN's John King that it was a "calculation" she made that "it was time to move on." The governor's "book deal and other issues" were "causing a lot of friction" in her home state, the source said, adding that he believes she is "mapping out a path to 2012."

To put it a different way: she wants to focus on making a lot of money instead of annoying things like governing. Then, she wants to run for President.

Now, Palin is undeniably popular among the Republican grassroots, so she would definitely have a chance at winning the Republican nomination. Drawing 20,000 people to anything in Auburn, New York, is very impressive. She will be able to use this support to raise plenty of money, and probably win caucus states, too. Further, her favorable / unfavorable ratio has hovered around the break-even point ever since the election. That is pretty good for a Republican, and enough that might actually be a threat if the economy doesn't recover. For now, Obama leads Palin 52%-40%, according to the latest poll for 2012.

However, stepping down as Governor halfway through her first term won't give confidence to anyone who already had doubts that she could perform well as President. Maybe it is just because I am a gay Muslim Mexican socialist coastal terrorist secular liberal elitist who doesn't "get" middle America, but this seems like a terrible, terrible strategic move.

P.S.: Many commenters will inevitably say this is becuase of some sort of looming scandal. Maybe, but I am still going with Palin being a bit flaky and looking to cash in.

P.P.S. Here is the video:

Also, Andrea Mitchell is reporting that Palin is "out of politics, period." That actually kind of makes sense.

Think of it like this (0.00 / 0)
Her chances of becoming president in 2012 if she steps down: %1.

Her chances if she doesn't step down %1.

Will anyone who currently supports her care that she doesn't have experience?  No, if she gained experience that would make her one of those DC elite who look down on her supporters.

Isn't it a bit early to resign now, if she wants to run in 2012? (4.00 / 1)
Can't it be that she has even more corpses in the cellar than was breviously known, and that she runs away from office to avoid a major scandal? Let's wait and see...

Hmm, btw, huge unemployment in Alaska right now... (4.00 / 2)
..and the only way to deal with it may be federal help. Palin sure wouldn't like to depend on the Obama administration. And then, does anybody believe Palin has any good resipes to fight the recession? Maybe she doesn't want to be known as the recession governor, and so she leaves that hard part of the job to someone else?

Hey Chris... (4.00 / 3)
"Maybe it is just because I am a gay Muslim Mexican socialist coastal terrorist secular liberal elitist who doesn't "get" middle America"

...got any plans tonight?

Seriously, fwiw, Alaska Report believes the skeletons in her closet are beginning to dance.

That is certainly possible (4.00 / 3)
But my guess is still she resigned because she is weird, and because she wants to cash in.

I think we both could be right (4.00 / 1)
given a situation filled with so much potential for screwball hijinks.

Now I'm leaning in your direction (0.00 / 0)
If she really is out of politics altogether, then maybe a scandal was looming.

The Skeletons Have Been Dancing For Almost A Year Now (4.00 / 4)
The Vanity Fair & CBS stories just show that people with media reach are finally starting to pay attention.

Good timing for the media... gives them something to obsess about.

Yeah ... (4.00 / 1)
there is no way she runs for Prez in 2012 .. the attack ads by Mittens .. Pawlenty and Chuck Norris' BFF write themselves ... if she was really serious on running for Prez ... she would have not sought a 2nd term

Cna you imagine the "cut and run" ads by them? (4.00 / 1)
Of course, Sarah isn't exactly the sharpest tool in the shed...  she may have thought this was a good political move...

MSNBC says Palin done with politics (0.00 / 0)
Damn, I was so looking forward to the 2012 GOP primary - maybe Michelle Bachmann could run.

As long as a substantial bloc of voters exists that will express a strong preference for candidates like Palin, Democrats should hope that they get as reasonable a facsimile of themselves as possible.

Huckabee must be a happy camper right now (0.00 / 0)

[ Parent ]
He's far more dangerous than Palin (4.00 / 9)
His humor confuses people into thinking he's a reasonable guy.

Remember, Huckabee called for forcibly rounding up gay men and interring them indefinitely.  Although he's abandoned this position, he continues to defend his stand at the time.

Anyone who goes up against this guy or mentions him in talk show/blog format should point out that he's a "dangerous right wing radical whose views fall far out of the mainstream of American politics," or something to that effect.

We cannot afford to permit Huckabee a free ride as he attempts to portray himself as rational.  He's as crazy  as Palin but more coherent and therefore devious.

[ Parent ]
Maybe... (0.00 / 0)
But forced to choose, I'd take Huckabee over Palin or Mittens any day.

[ Parent ]
Pawlenty? (0.00 / 0)
He's as "nice" as Huckabee, but with a much drier sense of humor. "Show me the dead Canadians!" - classic Tim Pawlenty.

We'll see whether the "unallotment" budget cuts will make him look mean.

I always thought they made a mistake not nominating him.  I think if GOP didn't do winner-take-all, he would have won.

Palin a quitter (4.00 / 2)
She was facing corruption and conspiracy charges in her own state so of course she resigned... She's a quitter and a fraud.  So now let's see her stand up for the Republican party.  They were losers before.  Now they're losers backing a quitter.  Go for it, white guys.  D.

She's Toast And She Knows It (4.00 / 6)
On top of the Vanity Fair article, and CBS's email story, David Neiwert put a piece up at Crooks and Liars: "How I helped drive Sarah Palin crazy by digging into her past", which has a clip of his CNN appearance where he discussed Palin's connections to the AIP--not just her husband's membership, but a whole lot more.  They even played the tape of her video greeting to the AIP's 2008 convention.

This tape alone--which had ZERO M$M followup at the time--would be enough to sink her.  It already sent her around the bend once, as the just-released email exchange clearly shows.  If Mitt Romney couldn't torpedo her with this tape in 2012, he probably couldn't get out of bed in the morning.

Plus, there's really no end to Palin's scandals as long as she's governor.  It was only going to keep on getting worse and worse.

Now, does any of this mean she won't try to run in 2012?  Heck, she's a malignant narcissist.  She could run for President of France, and justify it to her hard core.  But the realistic run for the Presidency?  No, that one's gone for good.

Paul - dude - you got way TOO much faith or (4.00 / 1)
confidence or I-don't-know-what when it comes to the American public.

C'mon! RayGun and Bush Jr should have NEVER won!

BUT, given a population wavering between being clueless sheep standing in their own piss and shit, or, terminally distracted by American Idol and the upcoming Staples Center public funeral

AND, an 'opposition' party of incompetent sell outs,  politically incompetents, or a mix of both -

no way would I count Silly Sarah out.

I HOPE you're right AND I HOPE I'm wrong, but ... I was 20 when RayGun got elected in 1980, and I thought the guy was a Christo-fascist back then - without the benefit of 300 baud modems or blogs.

Well... (0.00 / 0)
Reagan did run a far better campaign in a change election when the country was tilting to the right.

Bush stole the election, although Gore's campaign was not good enough... it should have NEVER been that close.   Further, the contestation strategy was mistake ridden... such as only asking for recounts in 4 Dem counties, etc.

The Ballad of Brave Ms. Palin (4.00 / 1)
Brave Ms. Palin ran away.
Bravely ran away, away!
When danger reared its ugly head,
She bravely turned her tail and fled.
Yes, brave Ms. Palin turned about
And gallantly she chickened out.
Bravely taking to her feet
She beat a very brave retreat,
Bravest of the brave, Ms. Palin!

She is packing it in and packing it up
And sneaking away and buggering up
And chickening out and pissing off home,
Yes, bravely She is throwing in the sponge...

No way this is about 2012. (4.00 / 2)
Come on, it's ridiculous on the face of it. Nobody drops out this abruptly, this soon in their first term in office, and so far from the next presidential campaign, just to prepare for the campaign. It might -- MIGHT -- be plausible if Palin were a nobody that needed time to drum up support and name recognition.

Add to that the obviously rushed nature of this resignation. If this were part of some grand plan, she'd have at least a frickin' statement prepared, instead of giving some rambling diatribe sans notes, and, according to some reports, not even having informed her family of her decision prior to her speech.

No, this is a decision she was abruptly, unexpectedly forced into, which means it was most likely either something medical/physical, like illness or pregnancy (not likely, or else she'd have given that as the reason), or scandal.

My money's on scandal.

Your Instincts May Be Right (4.00 / 2)

Possible federal indictments coming down for the contractor kickback scandal that first was mentioned during the campaign?

The woman's a habitual liar and crooked as the day is long. Anyone with half a brain can see it. The annoying thing is that if these federal indictments go down, the wingnuts will try to martyr her as a victim of a Justice Department political hit triggered by Obama and the eeeeevil AG Eric Holder, who just so happens to also be, gasp, a black guy. Get ready for them to crawl right back down into the gutter with this one if it happens.

Yeah... (0.00 / 0)
It makes more sense if she was out...or at least sitting out until 2016.   Even if the economy is still bad, I cannot see voters giving her the White House.   I can't fathom it... I mean Bush at least had his dad's name and won re-election as Governor.   This is a woman who embarassed herself on the national stage and couldn't last a single term.  Either way, Obama would destroy her.

Obama? (4.00 / 2)
I doubt she'd survive the primaries.
