Conservatives (Re)acting Badly

As I have written before, nothing makes me happier in politics than being attacked, because you know by the reaction you are getting that you have hit paydirt with what you are doing. When Rep. Keith Ellison (D-MN) took the ideas from my book The Progressive Revolution: How the Best in America Came to Be and used them in a floor speech in Congress, and the reaction from far-right-wing Congressman Steve King from Iowa was a bitter, rambling tirade about socialism, I knew we were winning the argument. And yesterday, when my post about the July 4th holiday being the embodiment of the progressive values of equality and democracy, three different conservative bloggers (here, here and here) saw fit to attack. That's a very good sign.

What bothers these conservatives so much is the idea that progressive values are at the heart of the American idea. They love wrapping themselves in the flag, and going on and on about the founding fathers, and really hate the idea that anyone else might lay claim to that history. Their arguments- that the issues were very different then, that classical liberalism has a different definition than modern liberalism, that American revolutionaries must have hated big government because they hated King George, etc.- mask the fact that the fault lines in American history, from 1776 on, have always been about expanding equality and democracy, and that progressive-minded thinkers have always been for that, and conservatives have always been against it.

Conservatives have always argued that tradition should be revered and change should be feared. They have always argued that too much democracy is a dangerous thing. They have always opposed expanding the idea of equality- to blacks and women and the poor, to immigrants and migrant workers, now to GLBT individuals. They have always argued these things, and they still do. And progressives from Jefferson and Paine to those of today have always fought for more democracy, more equality of opportunity, more investment in regular people as opposed to giving everything to the elite and letting them run things.

When Abraham Lincoln gave the Gettysburg Address, he argued that this nation was "dedicated o the proposition that all men are created equal" and that our government was founded on the idea that it should be "of the people, by the people, for the people." His speech stirred great controversy at the time with conservatives outraged at the idea that, as the Chicago Times editorialized, Lincoln "misstated the cause for which they died and libel the statesmen who founded the government." Those ideas of equality before the law and equality of opportunity for all of us, of government of, by, and for the people instead of government of, by, and for the wealthy elites have always been progressive ideals, and will always be opposed by conservatives.

The Story of American Freedom (4.00 / 1)
Here's a good book by Eric Foner that deals with some of the themes you mention.

Great Book! (4.00 / 1)
It's a definite must-read!

"You know what they say -- those of us who fail history... doomed to repeat it in summer school." -- Buffy The Vampire Slayer, Season 6, Episode 3

Foner is excellent there (0.00 / 0)
and in Free Soil, Free Labor, but his greatest works are on Reconstruction.

I just watched a video on Americablog in which (0.00 / 0)
which John Aravosis and Jane Hamsher mention that Donna Edwards has been giving their blogs the cold shoulder since her election.

Is that true of OpenLeft, too?

I'm not aware of what they are talking about (4.00 / 1)
My experience with Donna has been great.

Thanks. They seemed (0.00 / 0)
surprised and hurt and bemused at the love/hate relationship between blogs and politicians they help elect, and I wasn't sure what was going on. I'm still not, of course, but it's an interesting new data point ...

progress is normal (0.00 / 0)
and is the natural movement for all societies albeit in different forms depending on the type of a society and govt a nation has, to stifle progress isn't normal under any circumstances and goes against the grain of the reality of human nature and the natural order of things.

conservatives not only stifle progress and change but they are afraid of them because they are only comfortable with things that they are familiar with and are literally scared of the unknown, until of course the unknown is shown by others during the natural order to be better then the known which is what progress is.

progress is inevitable no matter what the head in the sand right thinks, you would think that after being led into a better time by the progressives decade after decade the cons would somehow get the point that not only is progress undeniable but actually preferable to the status quo, of course when you base your agenda on the fear and loathing of the unknown and the different its no wonder the right repeat its mistakes decade after decade.

Conservatives win (0.00 / 0)
The conservatives may be losing the argument but they will win because their strategy is to make the American people despair of any effective problem solving from the government. Their strategy is working:

1. DISILLUSIONMENT, People are getting disillusioned with Obama, especially in the midwest and west. This will skyrocket when the cap n trade speculators jack up everyone's utility bills and create jack-jack down volatility in both the cap n trade and oil markets. the oil markets are already disconnected to supply and demand realities and are driven by the traders need to make monster profits in order to produce monster bonuses.

2. NO MONEY. Ronald Reagan's budget director boasted that the conservative/libertarian strategy was to create massive federal budget deficits so that spending on social benefit programs would not be possible. Sounds about right.

3.BANK BAILOUTS AND PRIVATIZATION. Investment banks are no longer investment banks, but just huge trading/gambling houses. As such they did not need to be bailed out. And they have no intention of changing their ways, including pushing privatization of all public goods such as ghealth care and utilities. Their privatization of health care has already skyrocketed the cists, which government cannot afford to keep paying.

Do not be so boastful. To win the conservatives do not have to make sense or win elections.
