Weekend Diary Preview & Evening Open Thread

It's been a wild couple of weeks--well, make that nine years, maybe. Anyway, I really haven't seen that much sign of teaching in the "teachable moment" that Obama talked about, so this weekend we're going to see if maybe Open Left can take up some of the slack.

I'll be doing a three-diary series on color blind racism, including an overview/referesher on what colorblind racism is, and how it fits into a larger threoretical framework, a look at GOP/conservative racism as it has manifested itself recently, and a look back at a discussion thread here at Open Left last weekend, to tease out the more subtle workings of racial blindspots and denial. I'm also contemplating a number of shorter, perhaps even downright snarky diaries on the subject.

On Sundary, I'm posting a dynamite diary by Robert Fuller--with some introductory commentary by me--which I think perfectly illustrates how the "rankism" frame could do a far better job of teaching us all something valuable in the "teachable moment" aftermath of the Gates arrest.

Also, I'm expecting a diary from Valatan presenting a more fleshed out explanation of the undemocratic pitfalls that lurk in a parliamentary system--a topic that flared up in comments last weekend that I thought deserved a deeper, more studied focus from all of us.

And somewhere in the mix, I'll be sharing the story I wrote for Random Lengths about the California Budget pseudo-resolution.

So that's some of what's in store this weekend. Now to what really matters.... What's on your mind at the end of this week?

Diary done (0.00 / 0)
It's here. It's also quite long, so if you'd prefer that I split it into a background piece and the main article (which would be relatively simple to do), with the latter to be frontpaged, feel free to ask.

I've Edited It With Subheads And Additional Paragraphs Breaks (0.00 / 0)
To make it more inviting. Take a look & tell me what you think. I think it's much better than breaking it up.

I've also made it a future diary, which means you can't edit it yourself, but I'll be happy to edit it further (or un-edit) according to your wishes.

I've tentatively scheduled it for 11 AM Sunday. I'm going to have a series of more analytical diaries tomorrow, and I'd like to leave room to add some more newsy ones, so putting yours into Sunday morning seemed a good slot. That gives plenty of time during the day for people to get into it. But if it's not a good time, just let me know.

Thank you. And yes, that does look much better. (0.00 / 0)
11 AM Sunday sounds nice, too.

It's high time Open Left finally embraces the much needed Beer Summit Diplomacy Thingy on it's own terms. It's also perfect for summer weekend behaviors. And BBQs. Besides, I think we can all do better than Bud Lite, for starters.

Snark? Oh yes, sign me up. Wait, I already am. Nevermind. Also signed up for various support groups in hyperbole, pathos, litotes, sarcasm (redundant?), satire and GOP Talking Points. So fire away.

News Report of the Day! Pelosi to allow single payer vote! (0.00 / 0)
Pelosi is going to allow floor vote on single payer, per The Hill. No further information as to when.

Let's hope it's referred to as Medicare for All, much easier sale.

People just call and say, "I want my Medicare. Now!"

Better be after August break--we need time to whip this big time.

Any suggestions as best way to use our time?

What about a continuation of your "Waking Up to the Health Care Disaster" (0.00 / 0)
I am still thinking that the health care reform debacle is going to be the watershed issue of our time.

I just read Bruce Dixon's Top Ten Ways To Tell Your President & His Party Aren't Fighting For Health Care For Everybody, which is enough to make any progressive's blood boil.

I highly recommend it to everyone who wants a clear, pungent summary of how we are being duped into conveying even greater profits on the private insurance industry via taxpayer dollars being thrown into the so-called health care "reform" effort.

It also summarizes how badly things have gone as of late now that Congress has done its dirty work and an authentic public option is beginning to fade out of sight and Medicare is falling under the ax.

Are you going to continue the conversation you started last week-end about the ever greater health care disaster looming over the country?

I hope so.
