Netroots Nation Announcement & Question

As I mentioned here (link), I'll be at Netroots Nation in Pittsburgh next week along with Chris, Natasha and a number of our other front-pagers, commenters, and vibrant Quick Hit-ers. And like last year (which I had to miss), we'll be doing an OpenLeft Caucus to get to know each other in person, talk progressive infrastructure, health care, and more. I'm told we had a packed house last year (even with a couple House candidates) and a wonderful discussion. Hey, we might even get Chris and Natasha set up a Powerpoint show of their wedding photos.

It's Friday, August 14th from 4:30-5:45 in Room 310. We hope to see you all there. If you haven't register, go here.

Also, a question: I'll be co-moderating a town hall discussion on health care with Howard Dean- which is also on Friday, the 14th at 9 am.

Since this is Netroots Nation, I want to ask a lot of questions from my friends and colleagues in the netroots (I'll even quote you and your username, especially the fun ones).

What health-care related questions do you have for Howard Dean? Leave them in the comments.

Why don't we do better at marketing the health care message? (4.00 / 3)
Clearly, there is no coherent message from the Democratic party for health care reform. For instance, the party's message has not been boiled down to a succinct or memorable tagline, while right wing opponents to health care reform continue to use "government takeover of health care" and other slogans as effective oppositional messages. Look, we've just seen how a presidential candidacy can be vaulted into victory by consistent and effective branding around messages of "Hope" and "Yes we can" and we can't use the same tactics to push forward the most important issue of our time. What's wrong with this picture?

Question for Doctor Dean on Medicare (4.00 / 1)
Governor Dean:

I ask these questions as a saddened supporter and contributor to your campaign in 2004.

I'd like to read from a transcript of  your July 17, 2009 appearance on Democracy Now with Amy Goodman:

The thing I love about Obama's plan is it's politically practical. Instead of saying, "This is the right thing to do," as Dr. Young said, "and this is what we're going to do," he says, "Look, you decide for yourself. We're going to give you an example. We're going to allow people under sixty-five to sign up for what people over sixty-five have. And you make the choice."

Let me repeat that:

We're going to allow people under sixty-five to sign up for what people over sixty-five have.

Surely as a doctor you must know that no plan on offer from the Democratic leadership, including the "public option," remotely resembles Medicare -- what people over 65 have. Neither HR3200 or HELP give the American people Medicare for All, a single payer plan.

Questions:

1. Did you not know any of the details of Obama's plan  when you made your statement on July 17, 2009?

OR

2. Were you lying about Obama's plan when you made that statement?

OR -- and this would be your best answer:

3. Will Medicare for all be the result of a reconciliation process that involves no Yes Republican* votes?

I am in earnest -- I will not equivocate -- I will not excuse -- I will not retreat a single inch -- AND I WILL BE HEARD.

Is there going to be equal opportunhities monitoring at the conference? (0.00 / 0)
Race, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, disability status, age, etc.?

In other conexts I've seen I've found it enormously useful in understanding as solely a first measure, what's missing so we/you can then make some strides in addresing institutional or cultural discrimination (i would guess usually unintended) within the movement.

80 Billion "behind the scenes" deal ?? (0.00 / 0)
Now that the NYT has confirmed that Obama's whitehouse deal done "behind the scenes" is a binding commitment to protect the drug companies from any further cost cuts, don't we have to re-evaluate how this is going to get done.

Congress is working like they have the authority, and the whitehouse is cutting non-negotiable deals direct with industry? Left hand knowing what right hand is doing??

WTF is going on here. The most important chance we have to do health care in decades, and Rahm and Obama are doing the nations business without transparency, and behind congress's and the public's back?? That is not change I can believe in. I am not sure we get this done this way, it seems only madness follows.

Please discuss this development with Dr. Dean
