On Racism, Death Threats & The Blindness of Those Who Will Not See

I appeared on CNN this weekend with Florida Republican Party Chairman Jim Greer to discuss the racial undertones of the tea party protests. You can watch the clip here.

As the images of the tea party march prove, there are, obviously, such racial undertones. However, there are many who refuse to acknowledge that simple truism, instead opting to pursue what I call "dog whistle politics." I know this not from just reading the swill on right wing websites, but from the loads of angry hate mail I received after appearing on CNN - including one that was an explicit death threat.

Yes, last night I received a full-on death threat from a person promising to kill me if I dare discuss the racial undertones of the froth that Glenn Beck and other political terrorists are clearly encouraging. I went through the process of contacting the authorities, and the police responded very quickly, which was reassuring. The whole episode speaks to a post I did last week about the Nation of Assholes - and it is demoralizing.

We're living in a world where the behavior of right-wing lynch mobs clearly is far less about ideology, and far more about partisanship and racial hate. As I said on CNN, we know this because for all the talk of concern about the Constitution and the growth of government, the tea party protestors were nowhere to be found when George W. Bush trampled the constitution and grew the government. That double standard exposes the truly dark forces driving this right-wing anger - and those on the right who refuse to acknowledge it prove the old adage that there are none so blind as those who will not see.

Mind you, though, willful ignorance is not the exclusive purview of the right. Over the weekend, I received some very nasty email and Twitter messages from self-declared "progressives" insisting that the news of a UnitedHealth lobbyist holding a fundraiser with House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee is a conspiracy theory that I fabricated, not really connected to Pelosi or the Democratic Party, or some amalgamation of both. These people have no actual evidence to support their claims - their attacks on me come from a sick form of sycophancy that makes them absolutely unable to do anything other than deify Democratic poltiicians. Again, there are none so blind as those who cannot see.

It goes without saying that there isn't a moral equivalence between conservatives who issue death threats against people for calling out racism* and Democratic Party cultists who attack people who tell some of the disappointing truths about the Democratic Party. However, the theme that ties them together is willful ignorance - the foundational impulse of the new Nation of Assholes we now live in.

Frankly, it's been a scary and depressing few days for me personally, and I'm frankly exhausted from trying to use verifiable facts to reason with far-right activists and Democratic sycophants who are willfully ignorant. But I guess my own negative emotions and fatigue is a predictable ramification of the work I'm engaged in - and obviously, it's far worse for those with bigger platforms and/or those who are bearing the brunt of racism and the economic class war.

for my part, I won't back down. The fights we're fighting are too important to let a small minority of fringe assholes on both sides deter us from seeking the truth - and achieving progress.

* Note to conservatives: Issuing death threats against political opponents doesn't really debunk the idea that you are building a political lynch mob. Some might say it actually confirms the assertion.

How sad that political "debate"... (4.00 / 1)
Has been reduced to death threats. And yes, the complete hypocrisy on the far right is stunning. Where were they when George W. Bush was actually threatening our civil liberties? Oh yes, they were telling us to "support the President"!

And btw, I'll agree with you on the increasingly frustrating pattern of "Obamacans" who never question anything President Obama says or does. Hey, I gave him loads of my time and money so he could get elected. I did that because he promised real health care reform (including a strong public option!). Yet when I point this out, it seems the die-hard Obama fans won't listen as they call progressives like me "obstructionists" for not supporting a bill just to support a bill.

Yes, Virginia, there are progressives in Nevada.

You've noticed that too, eh? (4.00 / 3)
Dare raise questions or criticize, and we're labeled "purists," as though our refusal to compromise on principle is somehow a bad thing.  What they won't admit is the fundamental truth that voters will seldom back a politician who tosses his principles out the window for the sake of political convenience, if ever.  That's partly why it's so outrageous and frustrating to see nothing but constant capitulation to the far right by Democrats.  A political party that refuses to stand up for anything invariably stands for nothing, and allows the enemy to define its positions.

I saw you on cnn (4.00 / 2)
and I thought you were excelelnt.  Of course, it's about race.

Obamacrats on parade (4.00 / 2)
Sad to say I'm not surprised about David's death threats.  If the racism of the Republican base ever gets to be widely accepted and discussed the Rep Party will be badly hurt.  They work hard to hide it because of that fact.

Re: the Obamacrats - they have their rose colored glasses welded to their heads.  They complain about Rahm and the other unnamed White House minions but never about Obama himself.  One day when they finally accept that the problem is with Obama not with the underlings I fear that they will turn nasty.  That's when Obama's approval ratings will really tank.

Take that threat seriously! (4.00 / 3)
You have absolutely no protection, and probably don't want to adopt a paranoid lifestyle, but if anyone in official Washington had received the same threat, the FBI would have shaken out an IP address and kicked down a door already.

Death Threats and Violence is worthwhile reading about how death-threats affect their targets, no matter what attitude they try to adopt, and a surprising number of progressives who work in high-risk environments overseas have consulted with somebody like these honchos.

The FBI has already arrested a couple of tea-baggers for similar threats, and you should report the threat you received to them.

Report threats, there is no other option. (4.00 / 1)

Not really (4.00 / 2)
Glenn Beck's piece about poisoning Pelosi did not either remove him from the air or jail him.  The assault rifles at the Obama rally in Montanna were tolerated.  A protest T shirt at a Bush rally, otoh, or the State of the Union Address got people expelled.

There is a sickeningly different standard for the right.  Of course, the Bush Admin gave a pass to right wing domestic terorists despite Oklahoma City.

A good part of this is about racism.  Some of it is about fear as the haves and wannabes see the possibility of both their status and their (possible) wealth slipping away.

Thank you (4.00 / 1)
Please keep up the good work.

Fantastis preformance! We need you on tv every damn day. (4.00 / 1)
Cutting directly to the bullshyte, deflecting crap, stating what should be the obvious.

Please continue to expand your role on television, accept offers from anyone to discuss and raise the bar of debate.

well done.

These people are insane.  Say it loud and often.

to be fair (0.00 / 0)
Your article on Pelosi WAS kind of conspiracy-theory-ish.  I mean, you even acknowledged that it might be a coincidence, and you were implying causation with the lack of proof.

I'm no Obama sycophant (and I'm pretty furious with both Pelosi and Reid), but I don't think calling it "a sick form of sycophancy that makes them absolutely unable to do anything other than deify Democratic poltiicians" is totally honest.  Sure, they have no real evidence to support their claim.  But neither do you.

All that said, great job on CNN, and my sincere thanks for taking the frightening abuse that's sadly part and parcel with taking on the conservatives.

These tactics are (0.00 / 0)
meant to be demoralizing. I think that was the under appreciated element of the town hall nonsense or the guns at presidential speeches - regardless of the possibility that they might intimidate Obama or members of Congress, the whole affair helped turnoff people genuinely interested in dealing with the problem of health care and no doubt made some Democratic supporters think twice before showing up.

Politics is the art of the possible, but that means you have to think about changing what is possible, not that you have to accept it in perpetuity.

The lunatic Fringe, either right of left (0.00 / 0)
Unfortunately, David, threats come with the territory. You're a leading voice, and you tell it like it is, and the only way they believe they can stop you is with threats, because their reason has long since ended.

It does take a single lunatic to find an opportunity to carry out threats. These are the real dangerous people to our society and our world. They make up less than 1% of the population, and are surrounded by people whom they can easily manipulate and intimidate to carry out their acts. These folks are themselves paranoid, and frightened little critters, who believe the only way they can survive is to kill all others, but are to cowardly to truly confront you. So they'll try covert behavior, and hidden tactics to make themselves appear powerful; but they are the weakest amongst us. Their cowardice makes them send threats from hidden places, and in secrecy to give the target the illusion or the reality that the threat is everywhere, when it is not. Yet, without identifying the source to a person, it can give the illusion that it is everywhere.

But what really makes them a threat is how little is known and understood about them. How does one handle irrationality? But their profile is clear, and they can be sniffed out and stopped with very little effort, if we simply didn't bow to them as effective bullies, and expose them by name and deed in every instance they surface.

All the same, it would be prudent that you have astute observer body guards who can spot these folks before they get close enough to do any damage. And investigate all threats to declare them and expose them, as their lives are full of things, exposure of which will totally disable them. They are afraid to be exposed.

I'm glad you won't back down, as you should not.

Your weakness is the appearance you give of being in relative isolation, that is to say, you are perceived as a lone wolf.

As I've urged you often enough, it's time to lead the pack; make yourself visible through a progressive party leadership, and with organized supporters. Your integrity will carry the day. There are millions that are behind you, and when you bring them under the wings of organization, millions more will join.

A National Progressive Alliance, is the only viable solution.
