No On 1 Maine Concession

The No on 1 Maine campaign officially conceded early this morning. There will be a press conference on the steps of city hall in Portland at 11 am this morning.

I have a lot of thoughts on what happened and strategy for the future that I'll be writing about in the next day. For now, it's over, and we lost.

Thanks for all the support you've given the campaign and me.

thanks for your hard work (4.00 / 2)
sorry about the results. We'll get there. Unfortunately there won't be much leadership on this from the President until his presumed 2nd term. I think he's avoiding social issues and big military/terrorism changes until after 2012 as a political choice. They'll keep saying "we have more pressing problems." The problem with that, besides the moral ones, is that you need the base to win. Perhaps they'll just be happy with a narrow 50-49 win in 2012 and think they can get it without a base that's "fired up and ready to go."

Why (0.00 / 0)
Why are so many afraid of this .... is it tied in with religion?

Yes. And phobia. (0.00 / 0)
Gays are still "queers" to many people - including this "administration".

They use religion as an excuse but it's a lie.

Yours was a job well done, Adam. (4.00 / 3)
Sincerely.  Congratulations to the No On 1 team for an extraordinary effort and a campaign that was well fought.  As disappointing as the results are, you made an admirable showing even if you didn't get the results a whole lot of us hoped for.  As best I can tell, the dishonor, such as it is, goes to rural Maine residents.

Thanks for your hard work. (4.00 / 4)
As a mother of a lesbian, I thank you.

Now....where in the hell were Obama and the DNC when we needed them?

Defense vs Offense (4.00 / 2)
Maybe I am wrong but it seems this fight is always in response to referendum on a ballot .... why can't this be an offensive battle first? How about coming up with some ballot measures that the other side will have to spend their time and money to fight? Can't some initiatives be raised in any state? These folks need to be kept busy!
How about opt out initiative on a state level to refuse faith based money? Or censures for religions that hate the troops or profess certain races are "tainted" with the mark of the devil?

Exactly. (0.00 / 0)
The radical right learned to use ballot initiatives to get out their base. It's a ratchet effect because even if the iniatives fail, they get Republican candidates in office, and the iniatives don't always fail.

Why can't we do the same thing?

Sometimes they name the initiatives.... (0.00 / 0)
...in such a way so that they are so confusing you don't know what a yes or no vote will actually do.

I'm very disappointed by the result in maine

and in WA I see

Washington: Domestic Partnerships    51% reporting

Approve or reject a bill that expands "the rights, responsibilities, and obligations accorded state-registered same-sex and senior domestic partners to be equivalent to those of married spouses, except that a domestic partnership is not a marriage."

Washington: Domestic Partnerships

Answer Party Votes Pct.
Approve - 511,651 51.0%
Reject - 490,948 49.0

does anyone have any hint on what can we expect?

I am devastated (0.00 / 0)
for everyone in Maine and the No on 1 activists who worked so hard. I thought the right lessons were learned from the Prop 8 debacle in California, and I felt confident about yesterday's election. I don't know what the answer is. Minority rights should not be subject to a majority vote.

Unfortunately, this result makes it even less likely that Obama will do anything for the LGBT community, and emboldens Iowa Republicans who are pushing for a constitutional amendment to ban same-sex marriage here.
