Hope Isn't Change, Politics Is No Game, Patience Is No Virtue & Good Things Don't Come From Waiting

I was honored to give the keynote speech to the Democratic Party of Denver's annual Edward M. Kennedy Dinner this weekend. It was a sold-out affair, and I took the opportunity to both honor the senator who this dinner is named after, and suggest some principles for Democrats to embrace as we move into arguably the most important political moment in our lifetimes. It also included a key reference to one of the greatest television shows ever made: Mad Men.

You can read the speech here - let me know what you think in the comments.

One measure (4.00 / 6)
The establishment hated Roosevelt in the 30s and it didn't matter.  Not one bit.  They hated his work and used every snide little boy trick to bring him down.  It didn't matter.  The people knew and they could go ahead and rot with their newly legal martinis and the trust funds barely salvaged by FDR saving the economy.

If Obama and the Democrats do the right things they can be sure that the establishment will hate them and make snide prep school jokes.  They can also be sure that despite Rupert Murdoch and his ill-gotten billions, it really won't matter.

If they sell out, compromise and pass half-baked bills ... well, they won't matter and then they will be replaced and be off to their seven figure lobbyist gigs.

And we will eventually find real replacements for FDR and Martin Luther King and Ted Kennedy and Cesar Chavez.

Nice to see these dinners be something useful. Sure beats Mary Landrieu!
