Open Thanksgiving Day thread

I traditionally do this loooooooooong drive up to Buffalo with friends on National Get In Your Car and Sit In Traffic Day the day before Thanksgiving, but just could not do it this year. Too burned out. Flights are always too expensive, so I'm going up for Chanukah/Xmas- I haven't been in several years anyway- and staying put this week. Perry flew down to join me. An Indian friend of his from grad school is having some of us over tonight, cooking Indian, and getting destroyed by me and Perry in Taboo. You may gasp at that, but if there is one other cuisine I would rather have than traditional Thanksgiving fare, it would be Indian. Especially since I've already consumed both pumpkin and pecan pie this week, which are really the essential parts, in my view.

Other than that, I'm in the middle of a lazy afternoon sipping chai and reading Barney Frank's biography, which is pretty good.

This is an open Thanksgiving Day thread. Feel free to leave thoughts on where you are, what you're cooking, football, any amusing family political conversations, or whatever else.

Everyone, please give 2 thumbs down to NBC.. (0.00 / 0)
They just named the OctoMom as one of their 'person's of the year'.  On Thanksgiving.
NBC's water boy Matt Lauer will later try and convince you on why you should be thankful -for her.

But while they suck up to her outrageous and for profit behavior -for their own profit, they grossly insult and undermine the truly heroic behavior and performances of others by mentioning her in the same breath.

Nationalism is not the same thing as terrorism, and an adversary is not the same thing as an enemy.

"Octo Mom?" (0.00 / 0)
Until you lambast the outrageous behavior of "Octo Dad" or "Octo Doctor," that just comes off as so much cheap misogyny. Are progressives really now in the business of utilizing dehumanizing nicknames for women because they've made the intensely personal choice to bear children, regardless of whether we ourselves would have made such a decision? Attention-loving celebrities of whatever stripe and circumstance are hardly new, but because a woman is deemed inadequately maternal, she's worthy of another category of public reprimand?

Thanksgiving? What's that? (0.00 / 0)
Did you know this isn't a holiday in Germany? Nobody is celebrating this! Ok, we have the Erntedankfest, which traditionally, for the rural folks, has the same meaning, but it's much learier in the year, in early October. And while we somewhat copied Halloween in the last years, including plastic pumpkins, in the last years (in the 80s, most people didn't know about it), thanksgiving and turkey still haven't found any fans here.

Uh, well, ok, just for your information...

Most Americans are well aware that this is a (4.00 / 2)
United States holiday. In fact, it's one of those holidays that is viewed as "uniquely American", even though several other (if not most) cultures and countries have a formal day of "giving thanks", or something close to that idea.
