Empire State Pride Agenda endorses Peralta for Senate

In one of the first moves to take down some of the NYS Senators who voted against marriage equality, Assemblyman Peralta, who voted three times in favor of marriage equality in the Assembly and has a solid LGBT record, was today endorsed by Empire State Pride Agenda in his primary race against convicted Sen. Hiram Monserrate.

"Civil rights for all of my constituents and for all New Yorkers has always been a priority for me," said Assemblyman José Peralta. "I have worked towards full equality for LGBT New Yorkers in my seven years as an Assemblymember, and I will be proud to continue this work as a member of the State Senate. I think my record in the Assembly demonstrates that when I take a principled stand on an important human rights issue like marriage equality, I don't suddenly change my mind when the bill comes up for a vote."

Monserrate flip-flopped on years of support for marriage equality (in my view, as a big middle finger to the Senate Dem leadership, which is considering disciplinary action against him, but likely for some electoral reasons). Peralta has also already been endorsed by the Queens County Democratic Party and Rep. Joe Crowley. Monserrate is in deep, deep trouble next year.

was going down anyway, right?  Kinda hard to win after beating up your girlfriend, regardless.

I want to see serious candidates with some serious organization taking on the other vulnerable Dems who voted against marriage equality (and vulnerable Reps, of course).  Then I will be impressed and feel like donations to their campaigns would be worthwhile.

If equal rights groups are really serious they will band together, find serious candidates, and organize some serious fund-raising, including maybe a money-bomb day or two.

This is not so courageous (4.00 / 1)
The entire Queens establishment is backing Peralta.  Granted we as progressives lucked out here because Peralta is a much better pol than a lot of the other hacks the Queens party often backs.  But regardless, it's an easy move for ESPA to make because they're simply backing a candidate supported by the party and a guy despised by most people who pay attention to NYS politics.  I mean he slashed his girlfriend in the face with a shard of glass and then got off with 3 years probation.

I'll give ESPA the credit they desire when they start utilizing their institutional weight and funds to go after a more entrenched Democrat.  Let's see them go after Ruben Diaz, a guy who is just despicable on marriage equality and many other issues but has family connections in the Bronx establishment.  Or let's see them go after Carl Kruger, a guy who has created roadblock after roadblock for progressives but has 2 million dollars in the bank?  That would be the type of sticks ESPA needs to wield.

Relax (4.00 / 1)
Nowhere did I say it's a courageous move that deserves all kinds of congratulations. I'm reporting a positive piece of news.

Nor did I think you did.  I just wanted to make the general point to any readers that see this and would think "oh great, all of these great primaries are happening in New York."  This is an easy decision.  When we start seeing some positive developments in the area of hard primary challengers, then we'll know things are really starting to change.

An off-topic slapdown /rant against Roll Call.. (0.00 / 0)
C-span likes to ask Roll Call for it's opinions on the legislative goings on in either chamber. And Roll Call likes to give what it says are brilliant and unbiased views of the Hills' goings ons.
Unbiased. Oh really??
So those ads on their website by the Chamber of Commerce attacking the CFPA Act of 2009 or the ads for Wellpoint were put there by aliens??

One such example of their brilliant and unbiased coverage of Congress that just occurred and infuriated me enough to post it sosmewhere, is this personal observation by RC's David Drucker of the slavery/health care comparison made by the Senate's Majority Leader just given by Roll Call's David Drucker:  (paraphrasing) "Harry Reid is known for putting his foot in his mouth. He makes so many gaffs I don't even pay attention anymore."

Roll Call/Norm??, should dump this asshole and find an experienced professional to be it's voice on C-span in particular.

Next up on the list should be Sen. Onorato (4.00 / 1)
He's the state senator for Astoria, which has a large activist gay community.  You can look into OUT Astoria if you're interested in more information.  He's a Democratic Senator and a staunch opponent of gay marriage.  This one could be in the bag with the right primary challenge.
