Back when it was just about telling gays they couldn't get married and publicly humiliating them, Rick Warren never bothered to disavow this news report from the Kampala Monitor:

Dr [Rick] Warren said that homosexuality is not a natural way of life and thus not a human right. "We shall not tolerate this aspect at all," Dr Warren said.

But then, horror, elected officials in Uganda took him a little too seriously about the not tolerating people "at all" and were planning on outright killing them. I don't see where that's out of line with not tolerating them at all, and it didn't seem like Warren did for a while, either. But now, not only has he written a sternly worded letter on the matter, he says this on his homepage:

Did you say that homosexuality is not a human right?

Absolutely not.  What I said in an interview in Uganda was that there is no civil right to gay marriage guaranteed by the United States Constitution.  All Americans, and I believe all people, are "endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights," as spoken by the United States Declaration of Independence.

Fascinating clarification and long, long after the fact. Also, is there much of a difference between human rights and inalienable rights? I guess that's an exercise for the reader.

"Dr." Warren may (or may not, am leaning heavily towards 'may not') be qualified to opine about the bible, but this armchair Constitutional fanatic would like to point "Dr." Warren's large ass toward the following passages of U.S. Scripture:

Declaration of Independence:

"We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness. That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just Powers from the consent of the governed."

U.S. Constitution:

Preamble:
"We the PEOPLE of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, ... promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America."

Article I, Section 10:

[Clause 1]: No State shall ... pass any ... Law impairing the Obligation of Contracts.

Article IV, Section 1:

Full Faith and Credit shall be given in each State to the public Acts, Records, and judicial Proceedings of every other State. And the Congress may by general Laws prescribe the Manner in which such Acts, Records and Proceedings shall be proved [ed. note: proved, not eviscerated; Hi, DOMA!], and the Effect thereof.

Article IV, Section 2: Clause 1: The Citizens of each State shall be entitled to all Privileges and Immunities of Citizens in the several States.

Article IV, Section 4: The United States shall guarantee to every State in this Union a Republican Form of Government (Hi!, California and Maine! Thanks very much for making us an un-Republican form of Government!)

Article VI: Clause 2: This Constitution, and the Laws of the United States which shall be made in Pursuance thereof ... shall be the supreme Law of the Land; and the Judges in every State shall be bound thereby, any Thing in the Constitution or Laws of any State to the Contrary notwithstanding.

Article V: ... Amendments ... shall be valid to all Intents and Purposes, as Part of this Constitution, when ratified

Amendment IX: The enumeration in the Constituion, of certain rights, shall not be construed to deny or disparage others retained by the people.

Amendment X: The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the states, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people.

Amendment XIV: Section 1: ... No State shall make or enforce any law which shall abridge the privileges or immunities of citizens of the United States; nor shall any State deprive any person of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor deny to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws.

Section 5: The Congress shall have power to enforce, by appropriate legislation, the provisions of this article.

Much better than your last story on Warren, Natasha. And here's hoping you're not pissed about me because of my rcent criticism. Peace?

But, still, proving Warren lied is good, and his stance that homosexuality is not a human right is outrageous, but I'm still suspecting there's an even bigger story around the corner. Some decades ago, investigative reporters would have put their teeth into this, torn away the camouflage at the surface, and exposed the ugly reality of Warren's involvement in the Uganda scandal, dates, facts, offenders, and connections. Nowadays, investigative journalism has become a scarce good. We can only hope that somehow more information about this crime angainst mankind will see the light of the day. That horrible hatemongerer shouldn't get out of this with only some small bruises!

I'd read about this specific issue when I wrote that other post, but didn't have time to track it down. Last night I sat down to write, theoretically to write up another of the interviews I've gathered, but no dice. This was all I had the juice left over for and I'd been meaning to do it for a couple days.

But yes, imo, a direct line needs to be drawn between people in positions of authority calling for intolerance and people who listen to them taking violent action. I mean, when you say 'no tolerance', wtf were you expecting? A session of hand-holding and kumbaya rounds?

Most Senators are people who love attention, need attention, and who aren't good at writing or passing legislation. They're a flock of strutting popinjays whose careers are based on talking a good game. They're just doing what they know. They get attention by being contrary, by whining eloquently, and their incessant blathering seems to have unhinged a lot of usually reliable online people. I think the gruesome spectacle in the Senate has left some people frazzled unnecessarily. For instance, I wish someone would look in on Chris Bowers and see if everything is okay. I gather that some group of moral enforcers is giving the guy a lot of shit. Get off his case, already! From what I can tell, he does what I expect myself to do, but seldom achieve: keep working away, never stopping, not giving up.

If you're saying most progressives don't have a spiritual life, you need to get over yourself!  Everybody has a spiritual life, whatever it looks like to you.

If what you mean is that you really like organized religion, it's okay to say so, but it doesn't make you better than someone else.  I do too; I go to church every week, went to an evangelical college, and was a delegate the last two years to my state diocesan convention.

With fundie homophobes like Warren getting the most attention, it's important for members of the Christian Left like us to be allies of our fellow progressives, not judgmental.

well, although it's probably not a term I would use myself. I certainly, certainly wouldn't draw a straight line between having a spiritual life and reading "The Purpose Driven Life."
