Republicans would have impeached Gore over 9/11

There are a few lessons to be learned about the bathroom bomber incident.  Here are six lessons that come to mind:

  1. It is pretty easy for single, incompetent individuals to change United States federal policy through the threat of violence.

  2. Many Republicans believe that unions are a greater threat to national security than terrorists.

  3. Quite a few conservatives don't believe any criminal suspects are entitled to due process.

  4. Many conservatives believe that we should institute an apartheid state against Muslims in America.

  5. If Al Gore had been President on September 11, 2001, there would have been no bi-partisan, United We Stand language coming from conservatives.  The aggressive, partisan response we have seen to even this failed attack would have almost certainly meant impeachment proceedings against President Gore sometime in late 2001 or early 2002.

  6. A substantial minority of elected officials in the Democratic Party is willing to go along, or at least keep silent on with #3 and #4, either because they believe it or because they don't have core values and think those positions are electoral winners.  For the same reasons, a smaller minority of elected officials the Democratic Party would even be willing to go along with #2 and #5.
Although, since these are not the first examples of these outcomes, beliefs or counterfactuals, I guess all of these are actually reminders, not lessons.

True (4.00 / 5)
It's only "United We Stand" if there's no Democratic or liberal scalp to be had that can be cashed in on for political and financial gain.

Ah, But The Best Lessons ARE Reminders... (0.00 / 0)

...so it's not an either/or thing.

Indeed, it's often the case that a micro-example illuminates the larger phenomena that's more difficult for many to see.  (Hence the power of parables.)

Serious questions (4.00 / 4)
Do the House and Senate Dems even have a communications apparatus? If so, chronic EPIC FAIL!

Seriously, is anyone responsible for developing daily/weekly messaging, distribution to members/allies and assignment/placement of spokespersons with key media outlets?

Who is in charge of this? I want names.

Why are Democratic political leaders such incompetent politicians?

Damn good question. Maybe next time blogger dude from HuffPo gets to ask the prez a question, he could ask that instead of the DC beltway fluff he most recently asked.

Have a sense of historical context (0.00 / 0)
The aggressive, partisan response we have seen to even this failed attack would have almost certainly meant impeachment proceedings against President Gore sometime in late 2001 or early 2002.

Hard as it is to believe from our perspective 2009, they weren't that powerful at that time, they weren't that antagonistic -- it was possible to be a gop and still question Limbaugh -- and they didn't have the omnipotent media operation. The Democrats had control of the Senate and the filibuster was still rarely used. It wasn't anything like a golden age, but it wasn't nearly as bad as it's become now. They really did an effective job of consolidating power during the Bush administration.

The bigger lesson here is that Democrats still don't have an effective media operation. There should have been a Democratic offensive on this from the start.

(WTF isn't Rove in jail instead of on the TV? Every Democrat should ask Rove this question anytime they happen to be on set with him. Remind viewers of the reasons these people are out of power. They have zero credibility on any subject even remotely related to national security.)

um (4.00 / 12)
They weren't that antagonistic?

They impeached Clinton over a blowjob, and had a mob of Capitol Hill staffers shut down a recount in Florida.

And back then, they called everyone a traitor, including Max Cleland.

Its easy to go easy on conservatives of days past, because they become kitsch. But they really were just as bad, if not worse.

My father and I have talked about Gore (0.00 / 0)
Absolutely positively NO doubt Gore would have been impeached. He'd also be banished to France never able to set foot in the US again. I'm really sick of these cowardly democrats. It's disgusting.

Right wingers would have been at gates of Gore White Houe w/pitchforks & torches (4.00 / 3)
Hell, had Al Gore been in office and in the very unlikely event that he, too, had lazily and diffidently blown off repeated air terrorism warnings and 9/11/2001 somehow went down the same way, right wingers would have been massing outside the White House with pitchforks & torches and demanding Al Gore resign, be arrested, or simply lynched for 'allowing' the biggest ever foreign terrorist attack on the U.S.

I'm only slightly surprised (4.00 / 5)
That the Republicans didn't re-impeach Clinton and impeach Gore in 2002-2004 to convict Clinton/Gore for 9/11 anyway.  Cookie is still running around saying bush "inherited" 9/11.  After all, there's no statute of limitations on impeachment and they have the FedSoc to give a lawyerly veneer to their concocted legal theories.

Why no mention of impeaching Bush after 9/11 (0.00 / 0)
or, more seriously, the utter failure during Katrina relief?

That is the more interesting thought experiment, IMHO.

or,

If Gore had become President in January 2001, would the WTC still be standing?

9/11 was an inside job! Wouldn't have happened under Gore (0.00 / 1)
or Nader either.  Even if you accept the obviously flawed "official story", dur chimpfurher's gang of thieves was fully warned about the attacks and refused to act.

Again - wouldn't have happened under Gore even if you assume that "official" story is wholly true.

I know some will flame for even bring up culpability for 9/11, so I will just provide 2 links:

Morgan Reynolds:  No More Games - one of the original chimpy "dream team" members insists that bush/cheney are criminal psychopaths far beyond what most people are ready to accept.

He worked with them and knows - he is convinced it was an inside job and he has laid out his premises and strategies to get to the truth at:  http://nomoregames.net/

Interesting read from a guy that had direct access to all parties involved - certainly not a radical (or even liberal/progressive).

Architects & Engineers for Truth - believe what you want, but this organization has more relevant experience and expertise to understand what did or did not happen than any other group in the world.  http://www.ae911truth.org

So, you are a 9/11 conspiracy theorist. Awesome.

Later. Banned.

Phew... (0.00 / 0)
I was trying to figure out what to do with this, but last time I troll-rated something a bunch of people uprated it simply to "counter" it, and I didn't want that to happen here. =)

But who is "The Chimpfuhrer"? (0.00 / 0)
Does somebody know?  I can't figure that one out.  Is it a racist slag on Obama?  Bush?  Cheney?

I'm kind of relieved my brain doesn't work that way, whatever way that is.

Chimpfuhrer is George W (0.00 / 0)
I was having a giggle over that.

It's obviously George W. Picture this: He just said something (inane), then his lips parse and his eyes smile like an imp: Chimpmunk, plus, since he's the U.S. president, fuhrer. :>)

one of these things is not like the other (4.00 / 2)
one of these things just doesn't belong...

Pres. Lieberman:

Senator Joe Lieberman, a Connecticut independent, called for more widespread use of the full-body scanners after the aborted attack. "We were very lucky this time but we may not be so lucky next time, which is why our defenses must be strengthened," Lieberman, chairman of the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, said in a statement yesterday.

The committee said it would hold a hearing next month on airline security and how the alleged terrorist got onto the plane.

Pres. Obama:

As Americans, we will never give in to fear or division.

After making the preceding statement, President Obama was subdued by the other passengers and his pants extinguished.

not everything worth doing is profitable. not everything profitable is worth doing.

You know there was a video circulating during primaries (0.00 / 1)
that seemed to feature obama needing to "subdue" something in his pants...  Did anyone else see that (it seems to have been removed, possibly fake, but I don't know).

But to continue your scenario:  "After having his pants extinguished", Mr. Obama announced a new underwear/colonoscopy scope that would be used to screen passengers in the future and, continuing his administration's disregard for his progressive/liberal base, announced that his supporters should assume the position for pre-flight inspection.

What I wouldn't give (0.00 / 0)
to see a full body scan of Joe Lieberman on the cover of every tabloid in the grocery store. I don't care if it has to be faked!

If he wants us to show him ours it's only fair he has to show us his.

as it was, they never even let him serve in the presidency (0.00 / 0)
though he won.

He was far too dangerous to the status quo to be allowed near the heart of American power. A man who proposed a Global Marshall Plan aimed at restoring the environment, developing sustainable technologies, controlling the population, and establishing the political and economic systems necessary for an ecologically sound future. Not only did he have such a remarkable vision, but he had studied how to implement it, and had the ability to communicate his vision to others.

Clinton, they allowed to serve but harassed to make sure he did their bidding. But they didn't even dare risk a Gore presidency. The chance that he might try to do even a fraction of what he proposed to do was too great.

This is one reason Obama should be very, very afraid (0.00 / 0)
of letting the Republicans win back Congress in 2010. With two years to go they will find something to impeach him for. They've done it before.
