Teabaggers about hating you (and yes, I mean you), not actual legislation

In the post below this one, I asked if teabaggers (and some lefties) would work to support Scott Brown in the Massachusetts Senate campaign.  This is because Brown's unlikely, though not impossible, victory in the January 19th special election is pretty much the only chance left to defeat the health care reform bill.

So, what action are the teabaggers planning for that week?  Why, a completely unrelated, entirely symbolic, national strike to protest President Obama's one-year anniversary in office.  From The Hill:

Tea Party activists are planning to go on a "national strike" later this month to protest both President Barack Obama and the businesses and other groups that support him.

Their effort, which focuses primarilly on corporations that "employ individuals backing the leftist agenda," will occur in major cities on January 20 -- the date President Barack Obama was inaugurated last year, according to Allen Hardage, who is leading the campaign.

That's very cute.  From the "official" statement:

On January 20, 2010 we will demonstrate our power and reach to those companies who employ individuals backing the leftist agenda in every major city, every congressional district and every small rural town in America to spread one unified message. That message is simple: Stop funding socialism. When they refuse to stop backing the major opponents of Liberty, liberal media outlets and socialist leaning elected officials, then we proceed to financially cripple them.

Yeah--demonstrate your power to stop socialism by completing ignoring the one chance you actually have to stop what you consider the biggest instance of socialism in the "Democratic-Socialist" agenda.  Opt instead for a type of action that will have no impact except to identify yourself as someone who hates Obama:

Fred Taub, president of Cleveland-based Boycott Watch, said the national strike sounds like a one-day boycott - something he said never works.

"If I choose not to buy gas on Tuesday, I'm going to have to buy gas on Monday or Wednesday instead," he said. "I still have to eat. These one-day boycotts are completely and totally ineffective."

Who cares about effectiveness?  This isn't about effectiveness-this is about identifying yourself as someone who hates Obama!

It also reminds me of a poll the PCCC released last month, showing that most Republicans don't actually care about health care reform:

QUESTION: Is the issue of health care reform very important, somewhat important, or not important when you vote?
Group Very Somewhat Not important
Democrats 61% 33% 6%
Independents 36% 58% 6%
Republicans 11% 38% 51%
Other 34% 56% 10%
This helps explain why the teabaggers are taking a pass on action that could actually stop "socialism," and opting instead for ineffective, symbolic, identity-based actions: they don't care about actual issues or legislation.  Whereas only 6% of Democrats and Independents,a nd 10% of "others" consider health care reform "not at all" important in determining their vote, 51% of Republicans hold that position.

That is a remarkable, stunning, and very important poll finding.  It also helps explain the mentality of the current conservative, Republican and teaparty opposition.  It isn't about issues, or policies, or legislation.  For many, even a majority, it is just about demonstrating that they hate you (and yes, I mean you).  Everything else is simply a sideshow.

Why Aren't They Using Better Tactics? (0.00 / 0)
I actually want corporations to take their money out of democratic campaigns.

I am totally in favor of health care reform.
I am diametrically opposed to health insurance reform.

Why aren't we using better tactics. (4.00 / 1)
The teabaggers aren't anticorporate, so I don't expect them to carry water for me.  An act of civil disobedience, shutting down wallstreet for a week would be impressive, but nobody proposes this.

Poll (4.00 / 4)
I hate the wording on the poll.  I suspect many people who are against passing reform said no.  While "important" can include both pro and con, it certainly comes across to me as implying you support passage.  The question should be very clear up front with something like "regardless if you favor the current bills debated in congress, do you..."  Without something like that, a yes answer might identify you with Obama, which obviously would be very bad for some folks.

At least the tell me they hate me (0.00 / 0)
The democrats do too, but won't say it.   I am no going to vote for the condescending dems, just to keep them out of office sorry!

Duh? (4.00 / 3)
I mean, perhaps that's a bit over the top, but this has been fairly obvious to just about anyone with a brain ever since they started. Conservatives have gone insane because they lost and are no longer in power, and that's about it.  They hate the "other guy" for, well, just being the other guy. After all, what the hell has Obama really done to possibly piss them off this much? The only thing he's done that comes even close to doing something "progressive" and against their theoretical ideology is the stimulus, which still included the biggest tax cuts ever, something they are purportedly for.

The Village, obviously, doesn't get this, or maybe they do and don't care.  The teabagging right has only ever been about simply hating Obama because he was simply "the other guy" that beat "their guy." If John McCain had won, they wouldn't exist and it's not because McCain's policies would've been so much "better" for them, as they theoretically hate him too. They'd just be happy that "their guy" won.

The democrats hate republicans just (4.00 / 1)
because they are republicans.  Their opertatives have stated they plan on running agianst Bush again in 2010, even though they haven't changed anything.  Both parties are practicing identity politics.

True to some extent... (4.00 / 2)
Though there's not much of an "equivalent" to the teabagging right on the left.  Even though Bush stole the 2000 election you didn't even see this level of bullshit in Bush's first year... And by the time the left really started "hating" Bush it was, yeah, because of the fact that he, you know, lied us into war as well as a number of other things.  So, yeah.. I think the left's hatred of Bush arose out of policy opposition, as well as a general disdain for his incompetence and stupidity.

And to be honest, "the left" is far more willing to criticize its own party than the right, at least when they're in power. Sure, the teabaggers want to run the "moderates" out of their party now, but we sure didn't hear a peep out of them when Bush was in power and recklessly spending far more than Obama has had a chance to do yet.

the bottom line is neither party has much to offer (4.00 / 2)
so it just runs against the other side.

Maybe they uh, don't know about the Mass race? (0.00 / 0)
I'm sorry, this is a bridge too far here, Chris. Most people probably don't even know there's a special election in Mass coming up and most people, even more high-educated progressives, think a GOP has a snowball's chance in hell of taking the seat. This is a cheap shot at the tea partiers, which is hard to do.

Very few Republicans hate you (0.00 / 0)
They may militantly disagree with your political or social philosophy, but most Republicans are little different than Dems.  I have friends that are GOP voters that are very decent people that I disagree politically with.  On the other hand, I know Democrats who are selfish b@st@rds that hate the idea of health care, welfare, and taxes because it only helps the lazy good for nothings that get it.

Chris, is this just one more attempt to find someway to bring activists back into the establishment?  Let's get real.  Oh well,  at least you are willing to promote what you believe in.

Media stunts = Teabagger tactics - New Left tactics (0.00 / 0)
Like the New Left of old, the Teabaggers are primarily out to stage media events. Media coverage, media chatter is their goal. Their story dominates the media, allowing Fox News and Cal Rove talking points to penetrate all US media on a constant basis. They are succeeding.

Hate? (0.00 / 0)
Where is the hate? Have you ever visited a teabag event? No more threatening than a good antiwar protest. Did I "hate" GWB and his minions when I marched? Will I "hate" Obama when I march against his war in Afghanistan?
