CPAC: the Cruelty Political Action Committee

I have been on the progressive side of the aisle virtually my whole life (being around a lot of Republicans in Nebraska, I did flirt with being a Republican when I was eight years old, but fortunately my older brother and sister talked me out of that quickly), but I have always believed that conservatives in American history had an honorable tradition in part. Yes, they have the pro-slavery, anti-women's suffrage, and Great Depression inducing Republicans in their midst, but they also had honorable patriots like John Adams and Everett Dirksen. Modern-day conservatives, however, have decided to throw the honorable part of conservatism under the bus along with every other sentiment that might get in their way.

The pro-torture crowd has taken over modern conservatism. People at the CPAC convention are firing themselves up with cries of "waterboard them" and cheering wildly as speakers advocated locking political prisoners away forever at Gitmo. Republicans are embracing a movement that trafficks in secessionism, birtherism, and making threats about armed revolt.

While there has always been a crazy streak in the conservative movement- the John Birch Society founder used to call Dwight Eisenhower a communist agent- the most wild extremists have never taken over the movement lock, stock and barrel before. Today they are thoroughly in control.

Here's what I find so puzzling. Let me throw out some random quotes for you, and you tell me which socialist tract they came from:

"Love mercy, show kindness, and walk humbly with your God"

"I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you made me welcome, lacking clothes and you clothed me, sick and you visited me, in prison and you came to see me... in so far as you did this to one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did it to me"

"He has filled the starving poor with good things, and sent the rich away empty"

"The spirit of the Lord is upon me, for he has anointed me to bring good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim liberty to the captives, sight to the blind, to let the oppressed go free, to proclaim a year of favour [when the poor would be forgiven their debts] from the Lord"

Okay, you probably guessed it: the socialist tract of which I speak is what is otherwise known as the Christian Bible. I've looked all through it for passages about how you should torture people, and perpetuate cruelty, but I couldn't seem to find them.

Jesus didn't talk about torturing people, he talked about helping the poor. George Washington forbade the use of torture even in the darkest days of the American Revolution when the British were doing it to our troops. Jesus and Washington seem to be the two people conservatives claim as their greatest heroes. Can you explain this to us, guys? The answer to "What Would Jesus Do" is definitely not torture.

I respect a conservatism that worries about the unintended consequences of change, and gets uncomfortable when government gets bigger or deficits get higher. A conservatism that exults in waterboarding, in torture used by the Inquisition and the Japanese in World War II? There is no honor in that. There is no justification for it. The conservative movement has been taken over by the pro-cruelty faction, and is on a dark, dark path.

Jesus, sure, but... (4.00 / 2)
have you ever read the Old Testament?  To this day Sunday School kids sing nice little songs about genocide: "and the walls came tumbling down".

Yes exactly. They, the Dominionists, the Cruelty PAC, the right wing "Christians" do not (4.00 / 2)
study follow head or read the new testament.

Hasn't anyone written anything about so called Christians that deny the New Testament being, not hypocrites, but oh yes, heretics.

This isn't funny. Its a bizarre rewriting of one of the most central cultural foundations of western culture. I know its possible to postualte a culture that has 'passed by' or grown up from this religion, but that ignores the damage being done to whatever was most insightful in those teachings, those portions of those teachings that brought now world culture closest to sanity, as Mike points out. I cannot think of a single teaching in Mathew I would to.

They pick and choose which parts of the Bible to follow (4.00 / 3)
One line in the Old Testament is reason enough to deny same-sex relationships as many rights as possible.

But when other parts of the Old Testament forbid a laundry list of food, or encourage and promote slavery, that's somehow not followed?  Why can't we have those laws in place?  Where are the religious conservatives calling for a repeal of the Thirteenth Amendment?

Mike, again I couldn't agree with you more.  I have been thinking about the oddity that is the modern conservative movement a lot lately.  On one hand many are self-proclaimed christians, but on the other hand they harbor very unchristian views.  This is just one of many intellectual incongruence however.  With much of the Stimulus being devoted to Tax Cuts one would think the Republicans and conservative would rejoice.  With the public option being dropped from a possible health care bill again you would think that compromise would be trumpeted.  With the efforts to reduce the deficit by creating a commission it should clearly be extolled as a Liberal compromising with Conservatives to get things done.  Yet the result seems to be increased vitriol aimed at Obama.  No one remembers how we got here, they just blame and judge the man trying to clean it up.  There can truly be no compromise when those demanding it refuse to acknowledge it.

I saw some CPAC conference people (4.00 / 3)
on the Metro today with buttons having IRS crossed out like the no smoking signs. I thought the day after the first suicide bomber of their movement struck was pretty disrespectful, but they don't think like that.  Yesterday really was an American suicide bomber who hated the IRS and taxes and the government, and groups like this egg these people on

They are growing closer and closer to treason. (0.00 / 0)

I don't know that the conservatives have much choice. (4.00 / 6)
If they want to stay to the Right of the "New" Democrats or the DLC, the only ground remaining is in Kookooville.

The Democrats are the conservatives, and the Republicans have become the Birchers in response.

The problem for the Democrats is that their conservatism has been exposed as a failure for all the world to see.

And after decades of conservative bipartisanship, this country is more likely to vote for any option (even a loony one) over "more of the same."

Even in Massachusetts.

nice post (4.00 / 5)
The lack of torture or cruelty advocacy in the Bible is why the con-servatives are writing a "new" bible. One that praises the worship of wealth and the disregard of mass suffering caused by this unholly greed.

These are the same people that changed the "Golden Rule" to: "He who has the gold rules". And coined: "The one that dies with the most toys wins".

Thier chosen supernatural deity is obvious.

Government by organized money is just as dangerous as government by organized mob..... FDR

Good post, Mike (4.00 / 3)
The only thing I'd like to correct is where you talk about

"conservatism that ... gets uncomfortable when government gets bigger or deficits get higher"

Let's remember that every Republican administration going back to Reagan (the great idol of many conservatives today) INCREASED both the size of government and the deficit. I don't recall very many conservatives getting uncomfortable then.

Cognitive dissonance - to the extreme - seems to be a key feature of the conservative mind-set. And it also seems to be something we liberals & progressives have a hard time understanding - I know I do. I wish we could get a better grasp on it, so we could effectively countering it - before it really destroys our country!

Yes. This is a piont that we need to understand. (4.00 / 2)
They dont oppose deficits. They dont oppose powerful governments that cannot be argued with, cannot be opposed, cannot be fought. The want governments that must be obeyed.

The spend money like drunken sailors (sorry Nav's) on purpose. It fits in tightly with Grover Norquist's "drag democracy to the bathroom and drown it" by so defunding government, that even necessary stimulous spending is "impossible", a nation healthcare system is "impossible" etc etc.

A well run government providing services the epople want, like schools, health and fire protection etc etc. is anethema to the "Rich and in Control Party"

They want the new feudalism, with the rich lords and the rest of us. See aristocracy, lords and ladies, Queens Kings and dukes when you think of the GOP and their masters.

Conservatives want more government in just a few areas (4.00 / 2)
1. Military

2. Corporate welfare

3. Policing our personal/sex lives

Everything else, we're on our own and they never even heard of us.

That sums it up! (0.00 / 0)
Sums it up very nicely!

CPACkers snicker and elbow each other.

Who is this diary directed at? The choir?

Are the CPACkers supposed to say: "Oh, OK. Gee, we didn't know, we'll change right away. No more mean conservatism for us"?

I mean, I agree with the assertions of the diary, mostly. We already know that they are cruel. So do they. But, other than to point out the obvious: That these folks really don't get the same messages from the babble, er, uh... bible that you do, what purpose does it serve?

And what about this one? (4.00 / 3)
And the multitude of them that believed were of one heart and of one soul: neither said any of them that ought of the things which he possessed was his own; but they had all things common. And with great power gave the apostles witness of the resurrection of the Lord Jesus: and great grace was upon them all. Neither was there any among them that lacked: for as many as were possessors of lands or houses sold them, and brought the prices of the things that were sold, And laid them down at the apostles' feet: and distribution was made unto every man according as he had need. (Acts 4:32-35)

Filthy communists.
