"Thou Shalt Not Bear False Witness"
    -- Ninth Commandment

I could never figure out why rightwing Christians like to lie so much.  But this is ridiculous (from Digby):

These people will stop at nothing:
For years the largely white staff of Georgia Right to Life, the state's largest anti-abortion group, tried to tackle the disproportionately high number of black women who undergo abortions. But, staff members said, they found it difficult to make inroads with black audiences.

So in 2009, the group took money that it normally used for advertising a pregnancy hot line and hired a black woman, Catherine Davis, to be its minority outreach coordinator.

Ms. Davis traveled to black churches and colleges around the state, delivering the message that abortion is the primary tool in a decades-old conspiracy to kill off blacks.

The idea resonated, said Nancy Smith, the executive director.[...]

A new documentary, written and directed by Mark Crutcher, a white abortion opponent in Denton, Tex., meticulously traces what it says are connections among slavery, Nazi-style eugenics, birth control and abortion, and is being regularly screened by black organizations.
Lovely.

Of course, to grasp the full depths of the evil involved here, it helps to recall that the religious right got its start fighting to preserve segregation, and they were initially indifferent to abortion, as I discussed in my diary "Shadow Elites And Religion--Part 1",.  So my blood was particularly boiling  when I read about this.  But I've also been working on this welfare reform myth series, and one of the things I've been doing is poking around at various statistics, including birth rates.  So it helps to know some basic facts.  (All figures are from the CDC's "National Vital Statistics Reports" Vol 56, #15, April 14, 2008.) The statistics make it clear that no one is imposing abortions on black women.  They may have more abortions, but this is a matter of their choice.  No one is controlling them against their wishes.  First note that black women as a whole actually have more babies than they want--snd by a larger percentage than any other women:

Paul Rosenberg :: Someone's going to Hell for this
Black women have far higher pregnancy rates than whites, especially as teens:

which is part of what contributes to them having higher abortion rates--but as the first chart shows, even with higher abortion rates, they have a larger percentage of children in excess of what they optimally want.

Digby also notes:

It would be nice if these same people didn't also demagogue against "welfare queens" and simultaneously condemn them for having too many children, but that would require an intellectual consistency of which they are incapable.

And, sure enough, even though black teen pregnancy rates are coming down, they are still well above double that of non-Hispanic whites:

Digby also goes on to report [emphasis added for what comes next]:

And they really need to get their talking points straight because, as Mike Stark documents, some of their people are making major errors with this one:
In this country, we had slavery for God knows how long. And now we look back on it and we say "How brave were they? What was the matter with them? You know, I can't believe, you know, four million slaves. This is incredible." And we're right, we're right. We should look back on that with criticism. It is a crushing mark on America's soul. And yet today, half of all black children are aborted.  Half of all black children are aborted. Far more of the African American community is being devastated by the policies of today than were being devastated by the policies of slavery. And I think, What does it take to get us to wake up?
I really hope that some of the leaders in the black religious community step up here. This is sickening.

Of course, it's a lie that half of black pregnancies end in abortion, much less that  "half of all black children" are aborted.  Among unmarried blacks--but only among them--there are as many abortions as live births, but both these figures are less than half, because there are also fetal loses, as there are for all groups.  What's more, this same ratio was seen for white unmarried women as recently as 1994 (second chart):

Among married black women, the abortion rate is far lower than the live birth rate, although it is significantly higher than for white women.  But once again, it is their choice, and they choose to have a larger surplus of babies than they had planned on than any other group, as the shown by the first chart in this diary.  Here are the married women's rate compared:

Let this serve to remind one and all once again that it's easy to tell when the "Christian" right is violating the Ninth Commandment: it happens anytime their lips are moving.

Jesse Taylor at Pandagon has made the excellent point that this, (4.00 / 2)
speaks to a serious case of conservative projection:

"There's a large element of the conservative movement that has never stopped thinking about black people as slaves.  Ever.

You're a slave if you vote for Democrats.  You're a slave if you choose to have an abortion.  You're a slave if you work at Wal-Mart and have kids (and are black, mind you - white people are just making a living, duh).  And because you're a slave, you might as well put that strong nigger back and that pliable nigger mind to work getting them what they want you want matter anyway?  You're just a slave!"

There's a serious flipping going on here, one where conservatives are displaying a phenomenal lack of respect for the right of individual blacks to make choices, and then arguing, with trademark chutzpah, that it's progressivism that has conspired to eliminate black freedom of choice.

Good catch. (4.00 / 1)
They could be projecting in other ways as well.

U.S. states whose residents have more conservative religious beliefs on average tend to have higher rates of teenagers giving birth, a new study suggests. msnbc, Sept . 16, 2009

Unwed pregnant teens and 20-somethings who attend or have graduated from private religious schools are more likely to obtain abortions than their peers from public schools, according to research in the June issue of the Journal of Health and Social Behavior. LiveScience, 01 June 2009

So True! (0.00 / 0)
I was thinking about writing some more about the twisted conservative psychology behind this.  I was thinking particularly about the long-term obsession with black female sexuality, going back to the long history of slaveowners raping black slaves, and how that flipped after Emancipation into an obsessive torrent of paranoia about black men raping white women, which in turn was used to justify mass lynchings, which were actually nothing more than a form of mass terrorism against black Americans, which was a key factor in disenfranchising them and keeping them poltically powerless for almost a full century after the Civil War.

But then I decided just to let the cold hard figures do the heavy lifting this time out.

conservative whites think they know all about black people. They're just racist pieces of shit.

a right-wing op-ed contributor (4.00 / 1)
to the Des Moines Register just published a column a couple of weeks ago about this, ostensibly in connection with Black History Month. He talked about Margaret Sanger's eugenicist views and tried to connect that to Planned Parenthood clinics being located in minority neighborhoods.

I am not surprised that they view this as a successful propaganda angle.

Teenage culture in black communities (0.00 / 0)
I also wonder if the high teenage pregnancy rate in the black community is due to different views of sexuality? I've read (can't remember where) that black teenage guys are more likely to view sexual activity as a positive at an earlier age than their white peers. If true, addressing that dynamic would lower the abortion rate among teenagers far more than abstinence.

To your initial point about trying to figure out what makes right wing Christians lie so much, my hunch is that it is a combination of tribal connection (to their church, at the least, but also to their class and their families and friends) and a personal need to believe they are doing good in the world. To achieve the tribal connection and the belief in their own good, they mash the facts to fit and ignore facts that don't fit. I'd be shocked if it were a deliberate and rational choice to lie in most cases. Put another way, this lying is a natural human response even if its outcomes are so evil and destructive.

No Future (0.00 / 0)
It's a world-wide phenomena that male youths who see no clear future for themselves are much more prone to immediate gratification, more sex more violence.  The way to change the culture is to change the realm of possibilities available to them.

I've read (4.00 / 1)
that among teenage girls, not using condoms is correlated with, among white girls, being overweight, among black girls, being underweight.

What this strongly suggests is that what we are really looking at is risky behavior triggered by feeling unattractive and unlovable. If a girl is undesirable, or believes herself to be so, she is lucky to have a guy even look at her, she's in no position to make demands, is she?

I would look at why girls feel this way before trying to convince anyone that sexual activity is not positive.

People vs Ideas (4.00 / 1)
Totally agree. It's really a matter of engaging people as people, in this case, teenage boys and girls of any race, to ensure they understand their options with respect to their sexuality as well as how to maintain their own self esteem.

What strikes me about sexuality is that, if you listen to the media, for teenagers it is "get laid or go home." Read 17 magazine and you'd think every teenager is having sex, that every girl defines herself by how many guys she attracts. It's sickening and you hope kids are savvy enough to know they're being played to generate ad revenue that supports publishing these magazines and TV shows.

Yet there are surveys going back to the 1950s that show about half of 18 year olds report they've been sexually active and half not. Which makes sense, if you think about it, because some number will be very sexually active, some equal number will not, and there's a larger middle group that doesn't feel driven or constrained. The bottom line, however, if these surveys are true, is that teenagers should not feel any pressure to have sex despite the media culture or peer pressure. Rather sex should be seen as an option in certain relationships as they evolve. Not every relationship will meet that standard and kids should not feel bad (or good, for that matter) depending on the outcome of their teenage years.

However, this is not the "frame" used by people who say abortion has caused a black holocaust. They appear more interested to score points and literally use people to achieve their agenda than to talk to people as people. It really speaks, perhaps, to the difference between conservatives and liberals.

Anyway, the intersection between human sexuality and politics is fascinating. You learn alot by listening and questioning what you hear and see. In this case, as you point out, you could reduce abortions by improving the self esteem of teenage girls. You'd think that would be lots easier and more Christian than what the right wing actually does.

Lies build on truth (0.00 / 0)
Forced abortions are entirely different from chosen abortions. By equating abortions/sterilization forced on backs and often used by fascists regimes, the right wing builds an effective lie.
