EMILY's List dumps Blanche Lincoln

Citing Blanche Lincoln's failure to live up to campaign promises, EMILY's List declares they will do nothing to support Lincoln's re-election efforts.  From Ellen Malcolm, EMILY's List chair

As I travel around the country, I've been asked repeatedly about Senator Lincoln's political troubles and what, if anything, EMILY's List will be doing to help her win a third term in 2010.

My answer? Nothing.

In 1998, EMILY's List helped elect Lincoln to the U.S. Senate. We believed her when she told us that that, if and when the Senate took up right-wing Senator Rick Santorum's bill to ban what he called "partial birth" abortion, she would insist on a health exception that protects women.

Our members gave generously to her campaign, believing that she would steadfastly stand by the pledge she made to us to protect women's reproductive freedom.

She took our members' hard-earned money to get elected. Unfortunately, when the Santorum bill came up for a vote, Lincoln voted for it even though it provided no exception to protect women's health.

EMILY's List members are deeply committed to electing pro-choice Democratic women whom we trust to stand up for our rights, treat us honestly, and make us proud. Our candidates fight for us every day. Blanche Lincoln failed to hold up her end of the bargain.

Since she wasn't there for us, we won't be there for her.

This certainly isn't the first time that Blanche Lincoln has lied.  From November 21st, 2009:

(Via Wonkroom) Not only did Blanche Lincoln sign a document stating that she supported the public option, according to her Senate website, she is still cool with the public option:

Health care reform must build upon what works and improve inefficiencies.  Individuals should be able to choose from a range of quality health insurance plans.  Options should include private plans as well as a quality, affordable public plan or non-profit plan that can accomplish the same goals of a public plan.

And here's a screenshot:

As such, it isn't a surprise that netroots organizations that have focused on the public option over the past year are now working to defeat Blanche Lincoln.

Blanche Lincoln is also facing blowback from labor, given that she supported the Employee Free Choice Act in 2007, but decided otherwise in 2009 once it had a chance to pass.

It looks like the coalition of groups emerging to defeat Blanche Lincoln were all lied to by Blanche Lincoln.  Her lies have led to this primary challenge.

WoW! (4.00 / 6)
As an outside observer, it's often seemed to me that Emily's List has lost some credibility over the years as its clout has grown--an all-too-familiar trajectory for political organizations as well bands that stay together long enough to record a second album.

Very nice to see this isn't going to continue in this instance--and particularly nice to see it announced in such a timely fashion.

You're right: They generally support DINO's. If Blanche didn't have such a huge... (0.00 / 0)
...spotlight shining on her for her evilness, I don't think they'd make an exception in her case.

Emily's List has lost its credibility permanently with me.  The conscience of anyone who cares about progressivism and even mainstream Dem policy should have already forced resignation from the organization a long time ago.

No way will E.L. stop supporting the worse candidate in every local primary, providing the candidate is a woman.

Emily's List jumped the shark when they endorsed Nikki Tinker against incumbent congressman Steve Cohen, (0.00 / 0)
or rather, when Nikki Tinker started sending out anti-Semitic mailers, and they didn't immediately rescind the endorsement.

It's interesting to me that they're refusing to help Blanche Lincoln, and Chris' observation as to why is interesting too.  But yeah, Emily's List has no detectable independent merit on their own anymore.

Awhile back... (4.00 / 4)
One of the A-List blogs made mention of Emily's List in terms of female conservadem candidates who had been supported by that organization, and whether it was wise to funnel money through Emily's List if one were trying to support progressive candidates.  Nice to see that EL has at least some criteria by which they are willing to sort.  Their withdrawal from Lincoln is good news.

It's encouraging to see that Congressional accountability may still be possible.

Is anyone else asking themselves, WTF?!?!?

think Emily's List had the balls to take on such a wise and correct position.

Good for them.

The Language is Great (4.00 / 2)
Very blunt and to the point language. No waffling. Let's hope other organizations like unions will follow the same path and pull back support for politicians who do not push for their agenda.

I hope this is the start of something larger (0.00 / 0)
Hopefully EMILY'S List and other Democratic groups will start looking for progressive leaders rather than seeking to curry favor and access with whoever wins a seat.  Punishing one bad Dem is a good first step. I hope people keep piling on - but I also want to know who is next?

Politics is the art of the possible, but that means you have to think about changing what is possible, not that you have to accept it in perpetuity.
