Elaine Marshall - Progressive Leader

To shake up the U.S. Senate we need to give vulnerable Republicans the boot.

Republican Richard Burr in North Carolina who votes like a zombie for anything Republican leadership tells him is a perfect example. After all this Senate seat has changed hands from one person to another 7 elections in a row.

You don't need me to tell you why Senator Burr has to go. Look at his record. Burr is anti-choice, anti-marriage equality, and supports the death penalty. Of course, he also supported Republican attempts to filibuster healthcare and worked against the public option.

And just last night, he stood with the rest of the Republican Party again to filibuster Wall Street reform like every other right-wing zombie.

The good news is that not only can we beat him this November; there is a strong progressive Democrat we can support to make it happen.

That's why today, Democracy for America announced our endorsement of Elaine Marshall for U.S. Senate.

JOIN DFA MEMBERS NATIONWIDE AND SUPPORT ELAINE MARSHALL TODAY

More on Elaine and this important race after the jump.

Charles Chamberlain :: Elaine Marshall - Progressive Leader
Elaine Marshall is currently North Carolina's Secretary of State. Not only is she is the first woman to be elected to that office, but she's the first woman elected to any statewide executive office in North Carolina.

Now, she's been the SOS for over 13 years and has a list of solid accomplishments. For example, she was instrumental in bringing about progressive lobbying and ethics reforms. She's been recognized for her efforts to combat counterfeit goods and protect copyrights. And she brought organizational skills and technological upgrades that have vastly improved the performance of her department.

But for Elaine to win in November, she has to win the Democratic Primary on May 4th first. All the Democrats running would be better than Senator Burr, but DFA members in North Carolina have chosen Secretary of State Elaine Marshall as the clear favorite with almost 60% of the vote in a three-way race.

Time is short. The election is exactly one week away.

Elaine is making her final plans for field and getting out the vote by the end of the day. Local DFA members are counting on the national progressive community to come together and deliver vital support right now.

CONTRIBUTE $20 TODAY AND MAKE SURE THE PROGRESSIVE WINS THE PRIMARY

It's not just DFA members getting behind Elaine Marshall, she's been racking up local newspaper endorsements too. Here's what the Charlotte Observer said about their endorsement of her:

Marshall is authentic, smart, experienced and public-service oriented. She has taken on special interests and won.

Here's what prominent North Carolina progressive blogger Pam Spaulding wrote about her endorsement:

I believe that Elaine Marshall represents not only the best fit for the job of U.S. Senator from North Carolina in 2010, but she brings the most experience and effective perspective to the race, something essential in order to unseat Richard "Bank Run" Burr in the fall.

Elaine Marshall isn't afraid to take positions and fight for progressive values. During our final battle for the public option, Elaine didn't hold back. While other Democrats and candidates all over the country were too afraid to take a position, Elaine signed on to the Senate letter calling for Senator Reid to put a public option in the reconciliation bill.

Elaine Marshall is the real deal. She's the progressive in the primary and the most qualified to take on Republican Richard Burr this November. Let's make sure she wins the primary first.

CONTRIBUTE NOW

We're proving that primaries matter when it comes to electing progressives to the U.S. Senate.

Whether it's Elaine Marshall in NC, Bill Halter in AR, or Jennifer Brunner in OH, we're doing everything we can to shake up the U.S. Senate -- because the first step to passing progressive legislation is to elect the progressive leaders that will get the job done.

Elaine's election is a week away. It's up to us to deliver the resources -- right now -- she'll need for GOTV.

Let's put her over the top.

some q&a's:

Employee Free Choice Act
You mentioned earlier in the comments that you were a supporter of fair trade in other countries.  Do you support EFCA?  More specifically, do you support a "card check?"

Environment
As you put it, Obama aims to "horse trade" (Off Shore Drilling may be just the start) to get another bill through Congress.  While its fair to say that legislation will always have some compromises, is there a point at which you would not be able to support an Environmental Bill?

What are your thoughts about cap and trade vs EPA regulation vs the state's rights issues that Bernie Sanders brought up a few days ago?

Health Care
As a freshman Senator, what avenues would you pursue to advance further reforms like a public option or a medicare buy-in?

What about the abortion language in the Health Insurance Reform Bill and/or the Hyde Amendment itself?

1) I am a union member (SEANC/SEIU 2008) and I support the Employee Free Choice Act.

2) I support the principles of Cap and Trade, but I am worried about the
effects it will have in my state. Small towns in NC were decimated by NAFTA and my concern with C&T is that they don't bear the burden economically yet again. We need to explore ways to mitigate the economic impact on small towns.  I do believe that there are simple things we can do to improve like financial incentives and other provisions.

3) I do support a Medicare buy-in and vote for and sponsor legislation in
the Senate to open it up to everyday Americans. In regards to the
abortion language, I was against it. I'm no fan of the Hyde language
either, but the additional language went too far in my opinion

1. Will you vote to renew the Patriot act when the time comes? Would you vote to repeal it if that came up before renewal time?

2. What's your stand on internet class of service regulations and net neutrality?

3. What is your stand on FISA?

4. Care to comment on telecom immunity?

1. No, but I do believe there are some legal measures that should remain intact.

2. I support net neutrality and I am very afraid of a tiered system of
internet access similar to what we have with cable.

3. I support the FISA courts, and I certainly think the federal
government should abide by the law. We have to make sure that there
are checks and balances that protect our civil liberties.

4. Ridiculous. They knew what they were doing and shouldn't be immune to
breaking the law anymore than you or me.

1. would you support including a medicare buy-in in a reconciliation bill and would you vote for it?

2. would you vote against renewing the hyde amendment?

3. what are your thoughts on marriage equality?

1. I do, it would be a very effective measure to bring down costs and
ensure every American has access to health care. As I recall,
Congressman Grayson from Florida is pushing a bill in the House that
would do just that. I would support a similar package in the Senate.

2. I would consider it, certainly. I also staunchly opposed the Stupak language.

3. DOMA is a disgrace and should be repealed. It is not the federal
government's job and I think committed partners deserve equality.

Why Marshall over the other Democratic candidates (0.00 / 0)
I followed a link that stated "Marshal is the choice here", expecting a comparison of Marshall and the other candidates (at least Cunningham, who was mentioned in the original story).  Instead, all I found was a short blurb that could have been generated by the Marshall campaign.

Regardless of who wins, Marshall or Cunningham (or one of the others), I will vote against that slime Burr.  After reading about both Marshall and Cunningham, I think I will be happy with that vote.

But why Marshall over Cunningham (or any of the other candidates)?
