For the Record, On SCHIP:

by: John Autry

It's unbelievable, but in the greatest country in the world there are 9 million children that are without health insurance, and almost 90 percent of them are from working families.  Two of them are my own grandchildren.

In response, both the House and Senate passed an expansion with bipartisan support of SCHIP (State Children's Health Insurance Program), the popular bill that provides millions of kids with health care.  This expansion will provide coverage to an additional 4 million uninsured children.

In a recent Washington Post poll, 72% of Americans support the SCHIP expansion bill. There is broad and bipartisan support in Congress for reauthorizing S-CHIP.  Which makes me wonder, who does not support children's health care?

Hmmm…do any compassionate conservatives come to mind?

President Bush has vetoed the SCHIP expansion bill!!! At the same time that Mr. Bush has requested an additional $200 Billion for Iraq, pushing the price tag for that fiasco to $600 Billion dollars and counting…

The SCHIP expansion would cost 35 Billion over 5 years…think of it this way, every day we spend enough money on the occupation of Iraq to insure 200,000 kids for a year!!

This is wrong in so many ways…
The president and members of his so-called "family values" party would leave children whose parents do not make enough to be able to afford health insurance without access or coverage. An accident or illness could cripple that family with debt from medical bills.

Besides, providing health insurance and preventive treatment is more cost effective for all of us. A recent study (Brigham Young University) put the cost of emergency room treatment at $2,000, much higher than it would cost for regular medical care & visits.

Keeping our children healthy is not just the morally correct thing to do; it's an investment in our future!

Mr. Bush argues that he must issue this veto because this is an attempt to provide health care for all American.

You're darn right it is! That's exactly what we need, access to health care for all Americans.  No more bankruptcy, or lost homes, over the inability to pay medical bills, no more ignoring illness or pain because you can't afford care!  Most all other developed nations believe that their citizens have a right to health care.  I agree, and I plan to make the push for health care for all Americans and make it a priority when I get to Congress.

Great video! (4.00 / 5)
I'm right there with your message! What we need is health care for all. I believe this is the opening round in the fight for universal  healthcare, and I'm glad to see a candidate standing up for it.

Damn Right (4.00 / 5)
I'm with you John.  It is good to know there is someone like you running for Congress.  It makes me think there is some hope out there after all.

Freedom of thought, opinion, and speech without fear is the bedrock of liberty.

Hope after all! (4.00 / 4)
Looked at your website. Great. There may be hope for this nation after all. These are the values that this country was founded on and I think we have gotten way off track. What astonishes me is that these ideals are considered progressive when twenty years ago they were mainstream. Shows you how far to the right this administration and conservatives have taken us. I"ll support you John.

I support him as well. (4.00 / 4)
I thought where he stood on every issue on his site was right on.  Too bad he isn't running for president.

Freedom of thought, opinion, and speech without fear is the bedrock of liberty.

Yeah John, finally a true progressive in the NC 08 race.
Thanks for all the good work you do and for standing up for real moral values

We need to elect (4.00 / 5)
progressives. The Bush Dog campaign is designed to pressure or replace the sitting "Dogs". I'm for replacing incumbent Repubs like Robin Hayes with solid progressive candidates.

Saw this (4.00 / 5)
in my local paper today:

Vote for children
President Bush's veto stands in way of helping kids

http://www.charlotte...

They've been sparring with Sue Myrick, NC-09 in the district next to yours, Robin Hayes, NC-08. Both Myrick and Hayes voted against this bill, and Myrick made a lame attempt to justify it last week. Good to see the editorial board call them on it.

Myrick Is Just As Bad (4.00 / 5)
Myrick is just as bad as Hayes.  Is there anyone as good as John challenging her this time?

Freedom of thought, opinion, and speech without fear is the bedrock of liberty.

I believe there is (4.00 / 4)
but the person who's challenging hasn't gone public yet. I think 2008 will be an exciting year for progressives. Get ready to work!!!!

[ Parent ]
We need more like John (4.00 / 4)
We need more true progressives out there running.  It is a shame there are so many just pretending to be progressive, leaving us to choose between the lesser of two evils. I'm personally tired of having to make choices like that.  I want to be able to vote "for" someone for a change.  With John running, I'll finally be able to do that.

Freedom of thought, opinion, and speech without fear is the bedrock of liberty.

Good People Wanted!!! (4.00 / 5)
Apply in all Bushdog congressional districts. Lots of travel, good benefits, multiple offices and the gratitude of a nation. Hopefully someone will step forward to challenge these compassion challenged reps. World leaders no more. Time to change course. Go john! Amen.

is there a (4.00 / 3)
good Republican in Congress? Hagel is about the only decent one I can think of, and he's in the Senate.

Robo Call (4.00 / 5)
I Received a lame robo call from Hayes last week.  A very weak attempt to justify his "I'm in favor of SCHIP... but here's why I voted against it" stance.

Unbelievable!

Good to see you (4.00 / 5)
posting here. And thanks for running! NC-08 needs a progressive choice.

What pisses me off (4.00 / 6)
One of the things that pisses me off about these so called compassionate conservatives is the fact that they deny health care to the children that they demand to be born.

What is it with these republicans?

the "family values" party (4.00 / 5)
They want to control a woman's right to make decisions over her own body and force them to have children, then refuse to fund programs that provide health care, food, or education.
Screwy!
I'm sick of the hypocrisy !

[ Parent ]
They sold you a (4.00 / 4)
bill of goods and that bill became due on January 20, 2001 and we have been paying the price for hipocracy, special interest and big business ever since. Why would you expect them to support anyone that's not in the 1 1/2%. "Give me your tired, your poor, Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, The wretched refuse of your teeming shore. Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me, I lift my lamp beside the golden door!" " No more".

It's a wonderful thing to see progressive groups working together on issues. We are really a powerful force; grassroots, netroots, activists.

stand up! (4.00 / 4)
We need to stand up for health care! Everyone deserves it, and no one should be broke becasue they get sick!
It makes me so mad just thinking about it!

Vulnerable (4.00 / 5)
Most of us ARE vulnerable.

you mentioned (4.00 / 4)
your grandchildren not having health insurance. My son was injured a few months ago, and the first thing we asked him after as he was recovering was "are you ok?". Second thing was "is your health insurance still in place?". Even with the insurance, we had a difficult time getting Blue Cross to cover proper care. They were ready to discharge him the same day he had his foot reconstructed!

Emergency Room (4.00 / 5)
We had an emergency room experience last month.  Everything is OK but after paying a $150.00 co-pay we've since received a bill from the hospital for $2,900.00.  Waiting now to see how much the insurance company will cover.  The President and Congressman Hayes say the emergency room is the stop gap for those who don't qualify for SCHIP or Medicaid.  I can't imagine having to make a couple of routine emergency room visits a year!

And please don't require me to get any further treatment.

Great line (4.00 / 5)
Love your Plato sig line, John.

The absolute worst (4.00 / 5)
thing I heard Bush say was that we all have access to health care, just go to the emergency room. Obviously he's never had to visit one. I was a single parent for a number of years while my kids were growing up, and I spent many hours in the emergency room waiting for treatment. Everytime they got sick I had to try to figure out how to deduct enough from the grocery budget to pay for doctor visits and medicine.

I think it's worse now. My parents live in a retirement community, and when my Dad broke his arm last year, he spent 2 days on a cot waiting for a room.

Best healthcare in the world, indeed!

[ Parent ]
Out of touch (4.00 / 2)
Bush and the Repubs are so out of touch with the American people. I think it should be a requirement that they have to trade places for a year with a struggling American. Perhaps a walk in someone else's shoes might be a wake up call.
Didn't some members of the progressive caucus do that earleir this year? I think they had to eat on a typical weekly food stamp allowance and said it was tough!

Whole System Is Broke.. (4.00 / 4)
And the SCHIPS program not only needs the 'Override' but needs more in monies and coverage and health care needs to get back to Reality!

The Billions speant on the Quagmire that should never have been, and denial of coverage for many of the returning Vets, than we also have this:

Medicare Drugs Cost Excess $15 Billion, Report Says

The study released today also found insurers fail to pass on $1 billion a year in discounts from drugmakers to participants in Medicare, the U.S. health program for the elderly and disabled.

SCHIPS covers the generations of the furture, a future that looks bleaker and bleaker!

If they were sent to fight, they are too few. If they were sent to die, they are too many!

What a ripoff! (4.00 / 4)
THe Bushies are out to privatize, overcharge and profit off of us at every turn. It's so transparent it's ridiculous.

At least there's some good news, c'mon override the veto!

McIntyre To Vote For SCHIP Bill;
Will Not Support Presidential Veto  (10/15/2007)

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- U.S. Representative Mike McIntyre announced today that he will vote to support the State Children's Health Insurance Program (SCHIP) and not support the presidential veto of this bill.

What about Veterans? (4.00 / 2)
They are getting screwed out of their disability, and access to treatment. We've had awful scandals in Walter Reed, and right here at the Salisbury VA Hospital.

John, Jim, as Veterans, do you care to weigh in if you're still here? I know Jim works tirelessly writing about these issues in the blogosphere.

Deplorable (4.00 / 3)
I want to see some feigned right wing indignation about the treatment of our veterans, instead of whether some politician has a flag pin on.
