Sen. Debbie Stabenow: Senate Republicans want the economy to fail

Today on a press call with bloggers, in response to the impending Republican filibuster of the jobs bill, Senator Debbie Stabenow of Michigan said that Senate Republicans "want the economy to fail." She additionally said that it was the most cynical political move she has ever seen, likely because Republicans stand to gain from the economic pain they will cause.

Senator Stabenow also said that the moderate Republicans she was negotiating with--such as Susan Collins, Olympia Snowe, and Scott Brown--were negotiating in bad faith. Democrats satisfied all of their concerns, Stabenow said, but "they kept changing what the concerns were."

Sounding extremely frustrated, Stabenow said that "we have no choice but to move on," and drop the bill.  The votes simply are not there for it right now, and other legislation needs to be addressed.  She did urge calls to Senators as a last ditch attempt to pass the bill.

When asked if using the reconciliation process was a possibility, Stabenow noted that would require the Senate to pass a budget resolution that contained reconciliation instructions.  And, she noted, all of that would take quite a bit of time, and face obstruction of its own.

When asked if Democrats should employ the nuclear option in response to this bad faith negotiating, Senator Stabenow said they are still looking at changing the Senate rules at the start of 2011, not right now.

Finally, Senator Stabenow noted that the White House had been involved in the negotiations, and were forcefully advocating to get the bill done.

Does Obama Care? (4.00 / 3)
You have to wonder if anyone in the Obama administration realizes what a total disaster this will be for THEM as well as for every Democrat in the country?

If Obama really had a clue he'd threaten to call Congress back into session over the August recess unless they passed an extension.

The problem with Democrats is that they never bother to make a stand on principle. Notice that "it's impossible so let's give up. We have more important work to do."

Like what? They're not going to address climate change anytime soon. Financial reform? That's being gutted as you read this.

What exactly is left that Democrats in this Congress are going to attempt to do that's so important?

The President should go all out on this, and he would if he could look into the future and realize that high unemployment is going to totally destroy every single other thing he might want to do over the next 6 years.

Unless he wants to wind up like Clinton, hanging on by his finger-nails under constant Republican assault on trumped up charges he'd better take a LOT more aggressive action than just "being involved in negotiations."

He needs to massively up the ante on Congressmen for not getting a bill done by refusing to accept their decision and keeping the pressure on right through August.

Transcending (0.00 / 0)
Oh no, Cugel.  Obama has moved past the tired old battles of left vs. right, so no way will the Republicans waste the rest of his time with petty garbage.  There is no red America or blue America etc etc etc.

Six years? (4.00 / 1)
Six years, you mean two. Obama should have been all over this a long time ago, as stated in the previous post.

there is no way that this Hooverisk president gets another term.

I'm sick of the "poor defenseless Democrats."  Getting beaten up by the mean Republicans, theme. If they want to whistle past the graveyard so be it.

I worked for the Democratic Party manning phones, getting people to the polls, and even being a poll watcher.  No more.
and I will not vote for Obama.

Did anyone point out (0.00 / 0)
that this is only news to the Village? I'm glad she is saying this, but some acknowledgment that other unserious people have been saying this all along would be helpful.

Also, if she thinks this, what does she think Nelson is up to?

Politics is the art of the possible, but that means you have to think about changing what is possible, not that you have to accept it in perpetuity.

With due respect, Chris buried the lead in this article, and so made the rest of the commentators miss it:
Senator Stabenow said they are still looking at changing the Senate rules at the start of 2011, not right now.

Changing the filibuster rule is still on the minds of Democrats.  We need to keep it there.

It is too late... (0.00 / 0)
...the Democrats had their chance to change things in 2009, and they blew it.  Don't expect any new change, Republicans are just waiting for the elections to take over.

Regards,

Never before in all our history have these forces been so united against one candidate as they stand today. They are unanimous in their hate for me-and I welcome their hatred. - FDR
