Candidates Spread Populist Message

While some establishment pundits and think tanks don't think populism is a good idea, check out what some candidates out in the field are doing:

1. This Andrew Romanoff ad kicks ass. People tell me he wasn't exactly a raving populist as a legislator, but he sure is a candidate.

2. Senate candidates like Roxanne Conlin and Robin Carnahan are banging away at their corporate backed opponents on the TARP issue.

3. Alexi Giannoulias just came out with this great campaign document which echoes the Moveon campaign's themes and message.

4. Look at what Tom Perriello is doing in a conservative district in Virginia.

5. More and more candidates are signing up for Moveon's anti-Washington corruption campaign, including Chris Murphy, Donna Edwards, Romanoff, Conlin, Perriello, Gian..., Mac D'allesandro, Raul Grijalva, and many more.

I could actually go on and on, but you get the idea. Progressive populism is spreading like wild fire because candidates are figuring out that it is the only message that can save them.

Perriello's Ad Should be Required Viewing (4.00 / 1)
I nearly did a spit take when I the cop car/ coffee cup bit.  He brings the message home in a witty, humorous manner that still manages to convey genuine sincerity about the need for jobs and the meaning of work.  Kudos to those who came up with the idea.

Why trust Romanoff? (0.00 / 0)
You are right, Mike--his record as a legislator was anything but progressive.  Among the relevant facts:  he was co-chair of Colorado's DLC along with Ken Salazar; he did everything possible to kill anti-death penalty and pro-sentencing reform legislation; and he boasted frequently of how Colorado had passed the toughest anti-immigrant legislation in the nation.

I see no reason to trust his newfound progressive streak--not unless he comes clean and admits how and why he had such a massive change of heart.  It is far more likely that he will rush to the center if he wins the primary.

Oh, and Bennet is not much better.

because Bennet is a colossal scumbag (4.00 / 1)

WOW for that Perriello ad! (4.00 / 1)
The right mix of humor and serious messages. That did impress me. Imho it leaves people both thinking that Perriello is a nice guy, and that he has good ideas in pointing out what could be done to create jobs. That should have an impact!

You're right. It is the only (0.00 / 0)
message and only ACTION that can save the Dem majorities in Congress.

Yup. And then, all politics is local, right? (0.00 / 0)
It's up to every candidate himself to prove to his voters that he/she understands their problems, and will work hard to solve them! The mood may be against Obama and the Dems, but in the end, it's still the candidate who has the biggest impact. So, Dems should roll up their sleeves like Perriello, and make things happen. For some, the odds may still be too strongly against them, but it's always better to go down fighting than to merely capitulate. Perriello provided an example, let's hope that others follow!
