For the Record, On Immigration, the DREAM Act & SAVE Act

I'm John Autry, a Progressive Democratic Candidate for Congress in NC-08. I have been following the national immigration debate with interest. Here's what I believe in regard to immigration. I believe we are a country founded on immigration. I am proud of this history and believe our diversity is one of our greatest strengths as a nation. I believe we must address the issue of illegal immigration by enacting just and fair comprehensive reform at the federal level, and I intend to work toward this goal as the representative from NC-08. This reform should include a way for undocumented immigrants who work hard, and obey our laws once they arrive, to stay here legally, and earn a path to citizenship if they so desire. Bringing people out of the shadows will improve our security, and help immigrants living here integrate into American society.
John Autry :: For the Record, On Immigration, the DREAM Act & SAVE Act
In practical terms, I fully support the DREAM act, which was unfortunately defeated several weeks ago. The DREAM Act would have provided immigrant children who pursue higher education or volunteer for military service with an opportunity  to obtain legal status. Many immigrant children were brought to the US as small children, by no decision of their own, and know the US as their only home. The DREAM Act had bipartisan support, but anti-immigration, xenophobic politicians, (i.e. John Cornyn, R- TX) obstructed passage of this bill. These obstructionists prefer to do nothing, so that they can continue to inflame their base with rhetoric and capitalize politically, rather than find a common solution to the immigration issue. Shameful.

The SAVE Act, is an enforcement only bill with a Democrat, Heath Shuler as a primary sponsor. Congressman Shuler's allies on this bill include Tom Tancredo , and other anti-immigrant hardliners, including an endorsement by my primary opponent Larry Kissell. It includes proposals to militarize our borders, expands enforcement to private contractors (think Blackwater), and expands police power.  I believe an enforcement only bill is the absolute wrong approach for Democrats to take; it will not solve the problem, will only promote divisiveness and inflict misery on many. Besides, it will not address the core issue!

David Sirota gets to the bottom of the immigration debate, making the connection between corporate desire to maintain a cheap source of workers with no power, and the corporate donations that drive lawmakers to avoid passing legislation that would support all workers. NC-08 is a district that has lost many jobs to bad trade policies, and it's been all too easy for people to scapegoat immigrants for the related problems. Good trade policies go hand in hand with solving the immigration policy; as Sirota correctly points out, bad policies have created millions more desperate immigrants arriving in the US. We must address the root problems by addressing trade policy, enforcing labor laws for all workers, and providing comprehensive reform for immigrants who are here. Only in this way will we increase our security and establish a nation where fairness, equity, and justice for all prevails.

Don't understand Dems (4.00 / 4)
taking this route. Republicans that went this way last election lost their seats. Comprehensive reform is the only way to go. Glad to see you stand by your values John.
You are who i want to represent us in congress.

Great diary John! (4.00 / 4)
We are a nation of immigrants. It is what this country was founded on. A refuge from persecution and an opportunity to better your and your families lives.I think David Sirota hit the nail on the head and I applaud your courage to meet the challenge from all angles. Morally it's the right thing to do. Thanks John and I support you in the 8th. Already signed up as a volunteer so keep me posted.

Fair, Humane Immigration policies YES! SAVE Act NO! (4.00 / 4)
Autry is on the right track!  His ideas make sense, unlike most of what is coming out of Washington.

We have to know who is in our country if we are ever to be secure.  We must have a clear, humane path to citizenship for hardworking, law abiding undocumented immigrants.  Under current laws, immigrants who legally applied for citizenship in 1984 are still waiting!  What is the incentive??  The laws are arbitrary and almost impossible to understand.

Corporations have mandated policies for way too long.  Workers, both American citizens and undocumented immigrants suffer everyday due to this stronghold they have on government.  America was built on the hard work of all of our immigrant families.

I have read the SAVE Act.  Read it.  It is downright frightening!  The main thing I see in it is more police power and more power to the government to infringe on our constitutional rights.  Have we not had enough of that already????  It's time to reign that out of control power back in, not increase it.

I am so disappointed in the "new" congress.  It's time for them to start moving in the direction the majority of Americans want to go - NOW!  We voted them in and we can take them out.  I am appalled the our government has the time to worry about a Move On ad, but can't seem to find time to address important issues like healthcare and immigration policy.  Get on with it Congress!  Listen to THE PEOPLE!

well thought out platform by Autry (4.00 / 5)
I'm impressed and encouraged by the immigration stance that John Autry has proposed.  Finally, some real, workable solutions.  It is in the best interest of all of us to pay attention to this particular campaign.  You have my attention, and I will even send some campaign money to such a worthy campaign!

I agree.  Autry's ideas are indeed encouraging.  I will support with money and anything else I can do to get fresh, dedicated people to Congress.

Trade & immigration (4.00 / 2)
You rarely hear the immigration issue framed as a product of our bad trade policies, but the connection is strong. Another thing we should be looking at is working to stabilize other countries, so they can provide for their citizens and keep them in their own country, where they'd prefer to live if their situation wasn't so dire.
I read an interesting book by Gen. Zinni in which he laid out the position that the US only gets involved in other countries when they're at a crisis point, but if we worked to help other nations with their infrastructure in advance of the crisis point, they be strong enough to withstand chaos and crisis. Therefore he argues, the world would be a safer & more peaceful place.

has stopped me in my tracks more than once with his insight.
