NARAL and Wynn

So in general, I've thought of Nancy Keenan, the President of NARAL, as just not particularly effective, which is why they endorsed Al Wynn instead of Donna Edwards.

I was poking around the internets, and I found out that Wynn voted to support Federal court jurisdiction in the Terry Schiavo case.

Great job, Nancy!  You continue to impress me by destroying the credibility of NARAL national faster than I thought possible.

That really suprises you? ... (0.00 / 0)
I guess I am cynical .. but people like Wynn and Keenan .. are only interested in the status quo ... can't upset their apple cart after all .. Don't want to upset Sally Quinn .. might not get invited to her next party

Don't mention this woman's name at.... (4.00 / 1)

She is an abomination (0.00 / 0)
Our local chapter of NARAL here is Florida is upset with her
they had many people quit as volunteers and it gets worse every week. They really need new National Leadership. I think this Wynn endorsement has really pulled them over the cliff and unless they do something drastic, they are going to lose much more than the revenues that already have substantially decreased!

This seems to be an across-the-board problem (0.00 / 0)
It appears that the leadership of most "progressive" activist organizations is completely out of step with the actual goals and rank-and-file interests of said organizations. Heck, look at the way so many labor unions have attached themselves to Hillary Clinton, who's awash in anti-labor money and advisers.

Chris has explored this phenomenon in a few postings here. This is just another case in point.

I don't have any quick answers on how we fix this, but at a small level, I'm helping organize a Democratic congressional candidates' forum here in western Maryland -- the debate's in February. The lead question for each candidate will be "Why are you a Democrat?"

"We judge ourselves by our ideals; others by their actions. It is a great convenience." -- Howard Zinn

That is great ... (0.00 / 0)
I wish the same would be asked of all the Presidential candidates as well

this is the danger of a coalitional approach (0.00 / 0)
The "logical" elements of the grand progressive coalition are either dominated by or have strong factions of such types.  At this point, a coalition is incapable of leadership.  They will paralyze it.

If we are to create something new, it has to be based on broad progressive principles AND a willingness to engage in tactics (Blue Dog campaign) that will offend.

If such an organization (per the Rosenberg proposal) were to develop some identity based on its own capacity, rather than derived legitimacy, then we could talk coalition.
