Obama Crushes in ColorOfChange.org Primary

I think we have a bit of a window into how Moveon members would vote with the results of the ColorOfChange.org primary.  Obama took 69.2% to Edwards at 11.9% to Clinton at 11.1%.

ColorOfChange.org endorsed Donna Edwards and has been important in a variety of fights, including most prominently the Jena 6 protests and the Fox News-CBC Institute dispute.  The group has around 400,000 members and uses tactics developed at Moveon to organize explicitly around identity fights.

They are a serious though less well-understood player; to give you a frame of reference, Color of Change has about as many members as the NAACP.

I love CoC, and agree with what you're saying about them as a group.  When I donated to Donna, I did it through them, and I jsut signed up as a member, which I'd been meaning to do for a while. That said, I think this post is probably pretty inaccurate because it doesn't take the differing racial makeups of the group into account.

Only 54% of their white respondents went with Obama. And I'm going to guess (maybe incorrectly) that white CoC members are more Obama friendly than white Moveon members. Not only that, but only a little more than half of the Edwards supporters moved to Obama. For Moveon to endorse, they need a 2/3 vote for Obama.

Given the numbers, I just don't see that happening.

I support John McCain because children are too healthy anyway.

Rereading, I got one thing wrong.  A little over half of Edwards supporters went to Obama, but only 9% went to Clinton. That changes things quite a bit, though I still doubt that Moveon will get 66% for Obama.

that one didn't work out.

John McCain opposes the GI Bill.

Tangentially related...
Here's kos on Sen. Kennedy's appearance on the very influential El Piolín radio show.

And from The Field:

Kennedy talks about the fight for immigration reform he waged "and at my side from the beginning was Barack Obama...Only two senators marched for immigrant rights on May 1, 2006, one in Washington and the other in Chicago. I marched in Washington and Barack Obama marched in Chicago. He was not afraid to stand up when others wouldn't."

Am I a member? (0.00 / 0)
I'm white, don't donate, didn't vote in this poll, I signed one petition.  But I'm on the email list, so probably I'm a member.

My point is that the NAACP may have harder, more meaningful membership within that gross number.  I don't know how they count members, either.

Much as I support the NAACP (0.00 / 0)
in my experience -- certainly not comprehensive, but still wide -- I doubt very much their membership base is much more meaningful than CoC. But they are definitely working on finding a way to influence this election.

Can it happen here?

TValley,

You're right. You've signed one petition and you're a member of ColorOfChange.

Let me say a bit about our membership-- we have varying levels of participation in our organization. Some folks sign up and take action every once in a while, and some folks sign up and take action on every email we send them. But folks know their voice can be counted, that they can speak up, and take very concrete action-- every single time we send them something.

Our members are of color and not, but all committed to building a strong political voice for Black America, by virtue of taking concrete action. That's pretty cool IMHO.

To become a member of the NAACP, all you have to do is donate. Which is fine, but, our philosophy is that you don't need to give money to be counted. All you need to do is speak up. I would guess that there are people at the NAACP who send in their donation every year and never open an email. Or, who've been members for some time, but never take any action.

Since you seem to know what your talking about (0.00 / 0)
Does Color of Change have any Facebook or Myspace outreach?  I'd love to join an official group, if there is one.  It would probably be a great way, whenever the next Jena or Katrina happens, to get people involved with the organization who are involved on a given issue.

I support John McCain because children are too healthy anyway.
