by: Chris Bowers

It is all over but the counting on the Republican side. Romney is out, meaning that McCain has it sealed. Barf.

Now, let's kick this warmongering, theocon panderer's butt in the general. Got any good googlebombs for McCain?

Set up a "McCain Doctrine" website and link to that

"100 years"

"old fart" similar to "miserable failure"

Good (4.00 / 4)
Let the news hole go cold all summer long on the Reupblican side as we Democrats suck up all the media with our extended primary. As long as we keep it upbeat. Democratic voters do love their choices this year...

My sig... (0.00 / 0)
I've been doing my small part in anticipation of this ever since he won florida.

I think the Baghdad market stroll is the best thing to focus on:

1) It's about the war.
2) It's intensely dishonest or deluded or both.
3) It's recent (unlike say Keating 5).
4) People got killed in that same market the next day.

But I'm certainly amenable to a better link than the one I dug up if one exists.

Your sig (4.00 / 1)
Have to say, I don't love that link.  The headline is about somebody named Cohen, so it's not obviously relevant.

I completely agree (0.00 / 0)
I really couldn't find a great article which soundly encapsulates how despicable McCain's behaviour in the incident was.  The good ones that do that are all liberal bloggers, which (unfairly) won't be "credible" enough to the casual reader.

There were other articles doing a straight factual account of the day, but what's key is the juxtaposition of McCain's statements about how safe Baghdad is, and the fact that he actually had a 100+ troops guarding him that day.

This One is Better (4.00 / 1)
Here is an article that has a great headline and has McCain saying that he "misspoke":

"McCain: I Didn't Need Armed Guard In Iraq: Senator Insists He Would Have Visited Baghdad Market Without Heavy Security"

And I think the Keating 5 should definitely be brought up too. A lot of what gets people so excited to "change" is the corruption and cronyism of the Bush administration. The Keating 5 goes directly against McCain's "straight talk."

From looking at the 2x ratio of voter turnout, the real election is the primary and it's between Obama and Clinton.

McCain has something to hate for everyone, from immigration to corporate written economic policy to Iraq.  I know what the general polls say but I question the ratio of voters in those.

If Romney wants to live another day he should wait for the GOP to finish imploding and consider another run.

The Economic Populist

His Ignorance of Economics ? (4.00 / 2)
Seems to me that a link to the Boston Globe or whatever source most directly quotes him on his own ignorance of economics will square nicely with the recession we are in, and will likely remain in, all this year.

Or, Chris Matthews (0.00 / 0)
A link to him saying (to Pat Buchanan?) that McCain's platform will be "fewer jobs, more war".

Here it is... (4.00 / 1)
Joe Scarborough on McCain:  "less jobs, more war" right after Buchanan says as to McCain: "the jobs are never coming back, the illegals are never going home, and we'll have a lot more war":

Here's the one (4.00 / 1)
I put in my sig line at DKos:

John McCain, 100 years in Iraq "fine with me"

here's one (0.00 / 0)
hat tip to DailyKos:

Boston Globe: McCain misses vote on economic stimulus

First paragraph is great:

WASHINGTON-Republican presidential candidate John McCain skipped a difficult Senate vote Wednesday on whether to make 20 million seniors and 250,000 disabled veterans eligible for rebate checks as part of a proposed economic stimulus package.

We get several body blows on McCain:
1) Mr. Straight-Talk skipping a key vote
2) He minces words about why he missed it, in fact he was in Washington around the time of the vote
3) Clinton and Obama were there
4) The vote was close, in fact, McCain's vote would have been decisive if he voted for the bill
5) It plays to his weak standing on economics, not only doesn't he know enough about the economy, he skips crucial votes in order to shore up his already in the bag nomination.  If Clinton and Obama could make it, what is his excuse?

another great paragraph from that article (0.00 / 0)

For McCain, not voting meant not going on the record either way. He has missed all eight Senate roll call votes this year.

Hell, that article should be the basis of attack ads.  Just dig up some quotes from Republicans ripping on Kerry for missing votes in 2004 and away you go.

Side note:  Will anyone call for the nominees of both parties to resign their senate seats while campaigning like the right did to Kerry (because MA had a GOP governor at the time of course)?  I bet they won't since all three governors of NY, AZ and IL are Democrats but maybe we should.  None of them will resign of course, but it's an easy hit on McCain and if he did, we would gain a Senate seat in the deal.

John "Reverse Ace" McCain is the Republican who I will most enjoy making snarky comments about.

Beoyond googlebombing (4.00 / 2)
We need to figure out what kind of personal attack will work on McCain.  The way Bush won was by picking a single critique (boring Gore, flip-flopping Kerry) and hammering it until it turned into the media narrative.  Some people have suggested using flip-flopping against McCain, but I think that takes on his decades old and widely believed "straight talker" narrative too directly.

Personally, it seems to me that painting him as unstable or irrational is the way to go.  That turns the "straight talker" meme on his head.  Suddenly when he says crazy shit, it's because he's actually crazy. Not only that, it will very much play into people's insecurity about his age. If we make that his personal narrative, I think it undermines his two main strengths, his perceived character strengths, and his ability to lead the nation in war time.

If we're going to googlebomb, I say we look for stuff that highlights how unstable he is.  Doesn't he have a history of cursing out other Republican Senators?

I support John McCain because children are too healthy anyway.

Found a great one! (4.00 / 1)

100% negative.  Has him cursing, highlights his unorthodox immigration position, paints him as nuts.

I support John McCain because children are too healthy anyway.

Apparently Mitt Romney figured out this line of attack at the last minute: http://www.bostonherald.com/bl...

It's a good piece collection of stuff, though unfortunately a bunch of it isn't available online.

Immigration (0.00 / 0)
Only reference to immigration there is McCain's "comprehensive immigration reform." Not enough to rub low-info voters the wrong way, but the rest of it is perfect.

McCain's own michael richards moment (4.00 / 2)
http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/...

Pretty raw language there. Also paints him as tied up in the past and lacking the judgment to make rational decisions on foreign policy. And furthers the narrative of McCain as having serious rage issues.

Also note that this wasn't one slip up. This is in response to him being asked to apologize for something he already said. He wouldn't.

In true McCain form, he later changed his mind and did apologize. But he sounds more like Dog the Bounty Hunter than a serious presidential candidate:

Really, he doesn't hate all of them, he's even got Vietnamese friends!

Crazy Uncle On Meds??? (0.00 / 0)
It just sort of popped out as I was talking to my brother-in-law today.

Most of the time McCain seems affable, but then he snaps (either verbally or mentally.)  And when he says that really crazy or mean-spritied shit, he's definitely in crazy uncle mode.  But mostly it's covered up, and the press covers up for him a lot.  So what does the whole scenario suggest?

To me, "crazy uncle on meds" sums it up perfectly, and sets up the narrative for bashing the media, and forcing them to start admitting the truth about him.  "Stop covering for the crazy uncle.  Sure, he's family, but just let him stay in the Senate, where he can't do any real damage."

Archie Bunker comes to mind (4.00 / 1)
But we'll need a more contemporary character to compare mccain to.  Creed from the Office would be good but he's too obscure.

What other 'crazy uncles' are there in pop culture?

Yosamite Sam?

Archie Bunker would work great. He's not an icon for young people, but I bet it would play well among older boomers, at least.

Oh, DEFINITELY Yosemite Sam! (0.00 / 0)
I mean, face it.  Abraham Simpson is certainly crazy enough.  But he's a pussycat.

He also falls asleep midsentence.  More the Fred Thompson type.

meds (4.00 / 1)
lately everytime I see McCain speaking on TV I turn to my husband and say "Is he taking prozac?"

Something is missing from his personality, it could just be him trying desperately to not have a personality that isn't republican-base friendly, but meds wouldn't surprise me.

This is the most devastating critique I have seen. (4.00 / 2)
Amy Goodman on "Democracy Now" interviews the editor of "Reason" Matt Welch on his book on McCain.  It is terrifying.  It's not opposition research, it's just a biography, but it would destroy McCain if it were widely known.

How the right will go after Clinton. (0.00 / 0)

An Email from Anne Coulter. Yes I get Anne Coulter emails. Fun.

"Hillary: The Movie"
by Citizens United
In the explosive new documentary Hillary: The Movie, Ann Coulter expertly summarizes Hillary Clinton's campaign strategy: "She is the expert of not saying what she believes. She will run on attacking Republicans and being the first woman President and ooh, isn't that amazing, and ooh, it's a woman -- she can walk and talk."

Hillary: The Movie lays bare Hillary Clinton's history of ambition over principle, politics before honesty, and arguably, self-interest above the law itself. The film includes over 30 in-depth interviews with experts and opinion makers including Dick Morris, Newt Gingrich, Robert Novak, Michael Barone, Tony Blankley, Dick Armey, Bay Buchanan, Mark Levin, and more.

Of course, the most compelling evidence against another President Clinton comes from Hillary herself. Hillary: The Movie uses Hillary Rodham Clinton's own words and deeds to expose her record of cynicism, controversy, and scandal. This new documentary illustrates that the "politics of personal destruction" is Hillary's favored approach to dealing with anyone who stands in her way.

Think you've already heard it all about Hillary? Dick Morris counters, "A lot of people ask me 'do we have to go through all these old Clinton scandals again?' Well, I have good news for you, you don't, you can look at the new ones, because Hillary Clinton scandals are a gift that keep on giving."

Among the bombshells in Hillary: The Movie, you'll see:

The deleted sequence from "The Path to 9/11" miniseries that was pulled by ABC/Disney under pressure from the Clinton machine

Smoking gun documents and video taped conferences exposing Hillary's participation in illegal fundraising

The media's role in Hillary's success and perpetuation of her lies

Hillary's new $110 billion per year healthcare program and the startling similarities to the Hillary Care fiasco of the early 1990s

Senatorial Candidate Clinton's pledge to create 200,000 new jobs in upstate New York -- and how once in office, she not only neglected this nearly impossible goal -- but voted against tax cuts that would have helped upstate New York

Video of Hillary contradicting herself -- during the same debate

Hillary's role in the controversial pardon of Puerto Rican terrorists

I found this one when you were back at mydd and I've been saving it.  The good thing about it is the link has been active since 1999.  It's old news, but if we're to clean up corruption in D.C. this isn't the guy who will do it.
