Donna Edwards, Victory Night

Donna Edwards is over at FDL right now, and she'll be here answering questions at 3:30 or so.  There are some questions in this thread, but if you have anything else to ask, leave it here.

And here are some good questions from the last thread.

JoeJoeJoe:

1) On what committees would Donna Edwards like to sit in the House?

2) Congress MUST pass 13 appropriations bills each year. Rarely do they pass all of them as individual bills. Instead Congress passes massive bundled omnibus bills with little transparency and less debate on the component items of these bills. What can an individual Congressperson do to change this and pass the 13 required appropriations as separate, coherent, transparent bills?

3) Donna Edwards. Great victory or greatest victory ever?

Here's BlueThunder:

1) What would you say is the smartest strategic move you made in this election? What is one thing you know now that you could tell people starting out in a primary campaign?

Here's amberwaves:

Dear Donna, You are a rock star right now. You have the opportunity to use the huge interlude between now and November to travel extensively and help progressive candidates and people movements throughout the US. Have you considered such a strategy?

My question (0.00 / 0)
Hi Donna and thanks for dropping by!  What did you change from your [electorally] unsuccessful run in 2006 that led to victory this time around?

Congratulations! And a couple questions. (0.00 / 0)
Congratulations on a GREAT win, Ms. Edwards, from one of your future constituents!

Here are a couple things I've been wondering about.  My questions presume a win in November, which I think you will achieve, though I'm sure you won't take it for granted:

1.  At this point I am guessing there is a certain amount of discomfort and uncertainty among the Democratic leadership in Annapolis and Upper Marlboro, in terms of the new situation that comes with your election.  Do you plan on meeting with various local legislative and executive folks (as well as business and community leaders) between now and November, for an exchange of views and information?  [I would include in that list even a chat or two with old school political emeritii like Tommy Broadwater.]

2.  Related to the first question, what do you think are potentially the most serious conflicts between any of the progressive views that (IMO) helped get you elected, and the interests currently represented by leadership in Annapolis and/or PGC and MoCo (e.g., letting of contracts at the soon-to-open National Harbor in PGC, an issue on which you have great expertise)?

3.  Would you consider jointly campaigning with other Democratic candidates with whom you share some common interests, even if they are not progressives?  An example would be Frank Kratovil in MD-05, who is running against the candidate supported by the odious Club for Growth.  Comments in the post I linked to suggest that environmental issues might be a winner in MD-05, where the health of the Chesapeake bay is a big thing.

Thanks so much for taking on what were huge odds, in running against entrenched corporate interests, for the benefit of MD-04 and the country.

Keep your mind free and clear, Donna Edwards, and don't sell your soul.

What's Next for Donna (0.00 / 0)
Now that the primary election is over, it's time for us to come together as Democrats and get to November.  I'm looking forward to sitting down with our legislative leaders and our local leaders to talk about the future.  Without a doubt, the landscape has taken a different shape.  I'm confident that we will work together to be on the same page about the direction of our CD and our country.  Already, I've spoken with a number of local leaders as well as the Democratic leadership in Congress.  We'll be just fine.

I plan to make certain that we have a Democratic sweep in Maryland in the Fall.

Thank you.  I look forward to following your continued success in bringing about much needed changes here and beyond.

CORRECTION: MD-01 (NOT MD-05) (0.00 / 0)
Just noticed I entered the wrong CD# for Democratic candidate Frank Kratovil's campaign in my original comment/query.  Should have been MD-01, not MD-05, which is Steny Hoyer's district.

While I'm sure no small number of progressives harbor the fantasy of replacing the current Majority Leader, it ain't gonna happen, and it certainly isn't something Ms. Edwards should touch with a 10-mile long pole.

Keep your mind free and clear, Donna Edwards, and don't sell your soul.

Smart Moves??? (0.00 / 0)
We had a tremendous team -- media, field, volunteers and a lot of hard work.  We managed to make these components work in concert from the beginning, building off of the momentum of the close race in 2006.  Also, we stayed on message -- very disciplined.  We continued to hammer away at the Congressman's record of voting with the Bush Administration and Republicans in Congress and his link to corporate special interests at the expense of the district and the country.  Lastly, our team was very creative -- taking advantage of several opportunities that were handed to us by our opponent.

It may be that the best move was the guerilla ad spot that was created at a lobbyist fundraiser that we staked out on Captitol Hill -- the Congressman gave us that one.

Thanks a bunch for the reply (0.00 / 0)
and, of course, congratulations!

My to-do list (0.00 / 0)
I'm excited to shore up our support here in the Congressional District during this eleven-month window.  Of course, I don't want to jump ahead so I need to get through the November election and then on to work.

Gotta Go (0.00 / 0)
I'm headed over to dailykos now -- join me there.  Thank you for all your support -- and, let's keep this Internet open -- just a little dose of democracy.

Congratulations (0.00 / 0)
I'm so inspired by your win. You've really laid down the gauntlet for Democrats in supposedly "safe" districts who abuse their position to do the bidding of the corporate lobbyists. You've also shown that a true progressive can win, and win big!!!
