Bush Dog Leonard Boswell Lies About Democracy for America

This is very irritating.

The battle of words rages on in Iowa's 3rd District, with the campaign for incumbent U.S. Rep. Leonard Boswell issuing a letter to Democratic primary challenger Ed Fallon railing on contributions from Democracy for America, a national progressive political action committee founded in 2004 by current Democratic National Committee Chairman Howard Dean.

"In light of your criticism of Leonard Boswell for accepting support from Political Action Committees (PACs), I was rather dismayed to see you accepting support and soliciting money for your candidacy from a PAC," wrote JoDee Winterhof, a senior adviser for the Boswell campaign.

Her words in the letter were echoed by one of Iowa's state lawmakers.

"You can't bash PACs and then enlist their support in your campaign," said Des Moines State Rep. Bruce Hunter. "It's like having your cake and eating it too. By keeping the money, Ed is being disingenuous."

Democracy for America sent an email asking for individual contributions, it's unlikely they made a PAC contribution.  This is below par journalism from Lynda Waddington at the normally quality Iowa Independent.  It's easy to verify whether DFA made a PAC contribution.  She should have.

Boswell's dishonest entitled attitude is a bit unexpected considering people tell me he's a nice guy, but it certainly fits in nicely with the Blue Dog caucus he reveres.  And it's lovely that he, like Al Wynn and Dan Lipinski, is trying to wound progressive organizations like DFA.

... In the comments I'm reminded that Howard Dean sent an email out to his list to give to Boswell back in 2004 as a way to signal to the establishment he could be a good nominee, and raised around $50k for him.  I wasn't a Dean supporter at the time, but I gave to Boswell because it was such a cool ask.  Boswell is the first non-Presidential candidate I ever contributed to.  And I'm no PAC.

I have to comment on this (0.00 / 0)
Boswell received about $50,000 dollars from Howard Dean supporters in Fall 2003.

Back in the days when raising campaign money on-line was new and exciting, Joe Trippi sent out a call on the Blog for America for supporters to send money to Boswell's campaign, as a way to demonstrate Dean's new ability to raise money for democrats. Boswell was the only Democratic congressman in Iowa, if I recall. A 'bat' was set up for this effort.

So now Boswell is trashing Democracy for America? I want my $10 back.

The money sent to Boswell's campaign I'm sure is documented in the archives of Blog for America.

Actually, DFA does cut checks (0.00 / 0)
I haven't worked there for over a year, but when we endorsed to the DFA-List in 2005 and 2006, we made a PAC contribution and did an endorsement/fundraising email. I don't see why that would have changed, but since the endorsement was the other day, I wonder if the PAC contribution has even been processed yet.

Hey Luigi. How's it going?

Yes. DFA cuts checks to campaigns too. However, only to campaigns that accept contributions from PACs. We did not even bother to offer to contribute to the Fallon campaign because we knew he would not accept it.

Instead, we encouraged our Political Action Community to take action. Our members on the ground are volunteering on the campaign. And so far, 730 DFA members have contributed an average of $28 each totaling over $20,380 in support for Ed Fallon's progressive campaign.

You can join the campaign too and contribute here:

Rep. Boswell is only continuing to prove exactly why primaries matter. This kind of mis-representation of Ed Fallon's supporters is disappointing. Comparing the $28 contributions from 730 individual DFA members to PAC lobbyists for corporations like AT&T and Pfizer that contributed 75% of Rep. Boswell's campaign funds last year, is offensive. Iowans deserves better. Our members called for action. That's why Democracy for America endorsed Ed Fallon.

you should send out another solicitation (0.00 / 0)
Point out that he lied about the donors and ask to double their impact.

this is about hypocrisy, plain and simple (0.00 / 0)
This is not about DFA, this is about hypocrisy and political opportunism on the part of Fallon.  A principled stance against PACs rings hollow when you start making exceptions, regardless of how worthy the PAC.  DFA endorsed Boswell because he is a good fit for his district, which is always competitive in the General election.  Say what you want about Boswell, but he has always taken on and beaten tough Republican opposition, and has never once thrown up his hands and endorsed Nader.

I don't think it's the reporting inasmuch as the clipping (0.00 / 0)
I'm late coming to this, but I only found the thread tonight.

Matt, I don't think it's fair to clip only that portion of the article and then make the accusation, based on what you've snipped, that I wrote a bias piece.

The article also reads:

Fallon has refuted the charges that he took PAC money.

"I've never taken contributions from lobbyists or PACs, and I won't in this campaign either," Fallon said. "We're pleased to receive the endorsement of DFA, which urged its individual members to make contributions to my campaign through ActBlue, an online clearinghouse for donations to Democratic candidates."

Fallon was endorsed by DFA on Thursday. The national grassroots organization encouraged its membership to contribute $20.08 to Fallon's campaign and to "support a Democrat with the backbone to stand up for progressive values." More than $10,000 was raised within two hours of the DFA's e-mail announcement to 675,000 supporters. Within the first 24 hours, according to Fallon, contributions neared $19,000.

Referring to Boswell as a "Bush" Democrat, the e-mail from DFA contrasted the two candidates' stands on the issues, citing favorably Fallon's record of opposition to the Iraq war, his refusal to take money from lobbyists, his consistent stand on the climate crisis and opposition to coal, his opposition to warrantless surveillance on Americans and his opposition to No Child Left Behind.

DFA is credited with helping Donna Edwards defeat incumbent Democratic Rep. Albert Wynn in Maryland's 4th District on Tuesday. In highlighting the newly organized DFA support, the Fallon campaign pointed to Winterhof's assertion in the Des Moines Register that Fallon "will not enjoy the backing of progressive organizations" that helped Edwards defeat Wynn.

In the letter to Fallon, Winterhof called upon Fallon to uphold his pledge not to accept donations from PACs and lobbyists by returning all DFA-generated funding. She also wrote a sample letter for Fallon to send to the DFA, requesting the organization stop all fundraising efforts on his behalf.

"I'm disappointed that Boswell spokesperson JoDee Winterhof made a false accusation against me," Fallon said and noted that 75 percent of the money Boswell raised last year came from PACs. "Perhaps she wants to divert public attention from Boswell's support this week of immunity for telecom companies that cooperated with the Bush administration's spying on American citizens. Once again, Boswell is voting with Bush against his fellow House Democrats. This is bad news for the public and good news for Boswell's PAC contributors, such as AT&T, which contributed $5,000 to Boswell last year."

Then the post goes on to detail the controversy of Boswell deciding to sign on to Kucinich's "impeach Cheney" legislation as a co-sponsor -- 10 months after it was introduced.
