Questions For Patrick Murphy

I'll be interviewing Rep. Patrick Murphy in about 45 minutes about his new book, Taking The Hill. I already have a few questions ready, but I wanted to see if Open Left readers had any questions of their own. What would you like to ask Congressman Murphy? Let me know in the comments.

Update: Just finished the interview, and thought it went very well. I'll post the audio file tomorrow. Your questions were great, and I asked almost all of them.

1. How the House Democrats feel about all these Republican painless filibusters, and if they are going to try to get the Democratic leadership in the Senate to handle them differently.

2. Does he have the sense that the vast majority of House Democrats would insist on a mandate in any healthcare reform, or alternatively, oppose one.  [Maybe this is too Obama/Clinton for right now.]

I'd like to know how he feels about his freshman class (0.00 / 0)
of 2006 members of Congress.  I think the netroots/bourgeois activist class knows how they feel (i.e. not exactly so hot, especially after so many volunteer hours, so much hope and so many small donations), and we know how the public feels (record low polls).  I'd like to know what he think happened after Pelosi took the gavel to bring us to where we are now, continually funding the war, rolling over on most things, etc.

In other words, I'd like to know how a very netroots-conscious candidate like Murphy (who, for our activist class, is a part of a group of freshmen like Sestak, McNerney and others who have disappointed) feels about how things have gone with this Congress, and try to compare that with how the netroots/bourgeois activist class feels.  Is it similar?  Is it a situation of idealism vs. everyday real life in Congress?  Does Murphy have a unique and especially insightful take on the situation from which we could benefit?

Kicking it in the NY-25.

I heard him on Bill Press yesterday (4.00 / 1)
I understand he is a military lawyer.

Ask his position on the President's use of signing statements.  Does he believe they are outright constitutional?  Can law be enacted to ban them?  Don't they subvert congress and the law entirely?

Lipinski, Wynn, Boswell (4.00 / 2)
I want to know what people in the house are actually thinking and saying about these races.

I hear a lot of hypothesizing about it, which is fine, but are there conservative Democrats who are legitimately scared?  Is the Edwards/Wynn race seen as a fluke? Are there members who were rooting for Edwards and Pera? Does anyone think Boswell will lose or want him to? Are Congressman hostile to candidates like Edwards entering the House by getting rid of other Democrats?

Basically, I want to know, from a Congressperson who is "on our side", whether this is working and how we can be more effective.

I support John McCain because children are too healthy anyway.

and what effect, if any, he expects to see among Bush Dogs, especially on issues such as:

1. FISA/PAA
2. Net Neutrality
3. War Funding
4. Pushing Congressional investigations of Bush Admininstration, including enforcing congressional rights with contempt citations.

Patrick Murphy - General Betrayus (0.00 / 0)
Patrick - as a veteran and a constitutional law lecturer at West Point - should have fought and voted against censure of MoveOn.Org.  But he didn't.  How can people have confidence that the new blood in the Democratic Party in the House is any better - more effctive and more principled - than what is there when they seek to suppress the free exercise of political and speech right?

Either one believes in the First Amendment or not.  Everything else is mere commentary.

Here is one (0.00 / 0)
Murphy is in a hard district to hold. Thus he spends hours and hours each week fundraising and will probably continue to do so during his time in Congress. I doubt he enjoys it much. So would he support public financing? More specifically the Clean Money, Clean Elections Act.

Can't wait for the interview.

John McCain: Beacuse lobbyists should have more power

Patrick Murphy will win this fall. (0.00 / 0)
He's raised the money he needs, he's done the ground work in his district, and he's voted exactly the way he said he was going to vote when he ran in '06.

Don't be surprised to see him put up Jim Greenwood numbers in November.

I know he will (0.00 / 0)
He's Patrick Murphy. But that doesn't mean it won't be a tough battle like it always is.

Youth Vote (0.00 / 0)
Ask him about what impact he thinks the youth vote may have on this election and what could those trends mean for Democrats in the long term?

Primary challenge fundraising (0.00 / 0)
1. Does he think it's more important to raise money for allies who helped you get into power- e.g. Pelosi raising for Wynn- or is it more important to build progressive power in the House?

2. Would he ever consider raising money for a primary challenge to a Democratic House member?

3. In 2006, Russ Feingold said on MTP "If Joe Lieberman wins the primary, I campaign for him. If Ned Lamont wins the primary, I campaign for him. I'll be supporting the Democrat."

Does Murphy think it's important to stay out of the primary and let the voters decide, or take sides in an effort to build progressive power (or for any other purpose)?

What did Rep. Murphy learn from campaigning in New Hampshire for Obama?
