4000 and a Responsible Plan to End the War

The war in Iraq won't stop until we make it stop.

The overall U.S. death toll in Iraq rose to 4,000 after four soldiers were killed in a roadside bombing in Baghdad, a grim milestone that is likely to fuel calls for the withdrawal of American forces as the war enters its sixth year.

The American deaths occurred Sunday, the same day rockets and mortars pounded the U.S.-protected Green Zone in Baghdad and a wave of attacks left at least 61 Iraqis dead nationwide.

Brandon Friedman at VoteVets thinks that the rate of troop loss, 25 in two weeks, is more significant than the 4000.  He points to signs of a political unraveling in Iraq and writes of an email from a friend in the Green Zone who actually slept in his body armor.

As I have said before, the violence in Iraq is cyclical and will remain so until we remove the bulk of our forces.  And with 25 dead in two weeks, we are not headed in the right direction.

It's time to take responsibility for ending this war.  We can do it.

Endorse the Responsible Plan for the War in Iraq.

Why do some endorse and not others? (0.00 / 0)
Matt,
How were the current endorsers of the Iraq plan chosen/vetted etc.?

I ask because there obviously so many Dem challengers there not signed on.

Here in Ohio, one challenger signed on, but another did not. Perhaps it has to do with establishment backing.

Kilroy: A Red to Blue Seat- no endorsement of the plan.

O'Neil: An unknown--but endorsed the plan.

I'd say call your local Dems-- incumbents or challengers and tell them to endorse this plan.

There were a variety of calculations involved in who did and didn't sign on, but we want to get to 40-50 candidates by September.

Can you make this some type of banner on the website? (0.00 / 0)
If readers at openleft/DK/FDL were to call their Democratic congress people who were running for office in 08 we might get some serious traction on it.

We should also try to make a systematic effort to wrangle state blogs into this effort. They can help have a local organizing effort.

It's gonna take more than that Matt. (0.00 / 0)

While I'm willing to sign the e-petition on the Responsible Plan to End the War (It should read "occupation."), the same Democratic legislatures we voted for in 2006 continue to fund this occupation. Our party, the one we want to represent us have not stopped funding the occupation. It's time to get new members of Congress elected. It's more than just defeating the Blue Dog Dems. We need to make sure we focus our attention on those Dems in Congress, that continuously fund the occupation and replace them with those who will not send another dime to this illegal and immoral war.
