New Hampshire's Senate Candidate Jay Buckey

Today's a very heavy New Hampshire Senate day.  I criticized NH Senate candidate Katrina Swett a few months ago, and then today Jeanne Shaheen felt the mighty wrath of OpenLeft.  And since this discussion started, I've learned from the comments that Senate candidate Steve Marchand and Shaheen are or have been associated with the DLC (and Swett is a LieberDem, of course).  It's not a good scene in establishment-land in New Hampshire, though that shouldn't be surprising as there was a rather abrupt transition from conservative anti-tax New Hampshire to Bush-bashing hippie mecca from 2000-2006.  Politicians in the Granite state must have whiplash, and apparently 'granite state' has been dropped in favor of 'sandal-wearing tie-dye state that bums weed off of Vermont'.

Anyway, despite former New Hampshire Democratic Party Chair Kathy Sullivan's admirable defense of Shaheen in the comments, these politicians are obvious tools.  Apparently, we're supposed to believe that DLC-aligned tax cutting hawk turned antiwar progressive with no explanation shows character, or something.  As far as my criticism goes, somehow Jeanne Shaheen's stated support of Bush's tax cuts or the Iraq war is actually Republican plot because it's on Youtube and posted on a right-wing blog, and also someone put it on a wiki and that person is mean.

As it happens, Joe Trippi posted his endorsement today of former astronaut Jay Buckey for NH Senate, so I surfed around Buckey's site to see what the fuss was about.  It turns out that Buckey is running a quirky campaign and has neat ideas and an intellectual 'big picture' frame.  Check out some of his youtube clips.  Net neutrality is core to the new economy, so I like that he's got a thirty second video on that topic.  He also covers global warming with a strong focus on energy (and Apollo Alliance framing).  My favorite video is his discussion of globalization, where he links it to education, health care, R&D, and retirement security.  Buckey's a scientist (doctor), and has an optimist progressive framework that I found really compelling.  Some of that is that he's a progressive techie guy and I'm a progressive blogger guy, so there's an obvious tribal affinity.

Anyway, Buckey looks like a really cool choice for Senate.  He's more Shea-Porter than Hodes, and a kind of nice fit for a newly hippie Hampshire.

We definitely need more of this kind of intelligence and forward-looking consciousness in Senate.

He really weaves his background, aspirations and optimism as a can-do American together very well.  The global warming video is somewhat long, and just conversational, but instead of being boring I found it quite interesting as a getting-to-know-him kind of experience.

The way that someone with a science background communicates about something like global warming can be very telling, and this intro told me that I sense a great potential to help move the public debate strongly in a positive direction.

I believe it's Buckey. (0.00 / 0)
Obviously his name I.D. needs to go up. :)

Buckey, not Buckley (4.00 / 2)
You are correct; Raymond Buckley is the current chair of the NH Democratic party, while Jay Buckey is the candidate for senate.

Matt, none of the announced candidates or Jeanne Shaheen are tools, they are all good people of Democratic Party principles.  A tool would not have run for governor after 14 years of Republican control of the State House and made major civil rights and pro-choice legislation priorities, as well as landmark environmental legislation and taking on the health insurance and utility companies for relief for consumers.  Is it okay if I come back to this site from time to time to make the case for Jeanne Shaheen until (a) she decides not to run, or (b)our September '08 primary is over? She was a progressive governor with an outstanding record, and will make an excellent senator.  I also urge anyone reading this to go to www.draftshaheen.com to read more about Jeanne Shaheen - and read more about all the candidates for US Senate before making up your minds! Bluehampshire is providing a lot of coverage, as well as a lot of info on why John Sununu has got to go.
Thanks!

Net Neutrality a farce (0.00 / 1)
Just another government controlled thing we don't need.

Who needs to 'level the playing field' unless you are a Marxist?

For $42/yr anyone can have a website....

The internet should go UNREGULATED. Is there nothing you Dems won't try to get the heavy hand of government involved in?

I grew up in NH (0.00 / 0)
And Jay seems like a great candidate, with a lot of potential.  He's got a great resume and solid progressive creds, but can anyone comment on whether he has a viable team in place?  CSP was a longshot from the start but she had a solid campaign team and infrastructure as well which allowed her to steadily build momentum.  Any word if any CSP people are working with Jay?

There is definite cross over... (0.00 / 0)
...while CSP and Buckey live on opposite sides of the state.  There are definite similarities between the candidates and some cross pollination of supporters.

CSP and Buckey are both former Draft Clark people and were very much involved in Clark's NH primary race.  (But there paths never crossed--again they lived in different parts of the state.)  Another similarity is how both candidates appear top be attracting NH Deaniacs as part of their core group of supporters and volunteers (although, at this point, different Deaniacs).

CSP certainly has a solid campaign team, but that did not happen over night and it's to be expected that Buckey's team will grow substantially over time.  It is no surprise that candidates initially recruit volunteers geographically close to home, so Buckey does not have CSP's team on board, but at Buckey events in CSP's district there is definitely a representative sample of CSP supporters and volunteers attending.

Of course CSP has her hands full running for reelection and I would not expect her core team to throwing themselves full-time into anyone else's race next summer and fall.

Our campaign is composed of (0.00 / 0)
folks with great experience in grassroots campaigns.  Jay came out of the draft Clark movement, our campaign manger and scheduler are Deaniacs, and we've also got folks who've been in on the Shea-Porter, Hodes, and Lynch campaigns.

All of that is great, but I think the best strength we have is in Jay himself.

1000 supporters (0.00 / 0)
The Draft Shaheen Committee announced yesterday that we now have over 1000 supporters signed up, which we put together in less than two months without an annonced candidate. The list includes people from all ten counties, and a cross section of the grass roots of New Hampshire Democrats. If Governor Shaheen decides to run, we will have an organization in place from day one!

Thanks so much for doing this Matt. (0.00 / 0)
Between you and Trippi, it's been a really exciting week!

If there are any folks here on OpenLeft who'd like to help out with our internet campaign, please drop me a line, gavin@buckey08.com.  It's still over a year until the primary, but I couldn't be more thrilled with how it's starting out.
