McCain: Ignoramus Express

It's fairly common knowledge that the position of President in Iran holds very little actual power. Back when moderate reformer Mohammad Khatami held the presidency, we were regularly reminded that he was pretty much of a figurehead with no real power. Now that the confrontational and controversial Ahmadinejad holds the office, we don't hear so much about how the president is not really the top dog. Obviously he makes a convenient boogie man for the right. Why spoil the scariness value. So it's no mystery why the neocon McCain would play this political game. But surely he's not so clueless as to be unaware that the real power in Iran is held by Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and the cabal of clerics known as the Council of Guardians. After all, McCain is the security expert! Hillary Clinton has assured us that he has passed the Commander in Chief "threshhold"! Could McCain really be that clueless about the leadership of the country he claims is the biggest threat we face? You decide:

What is even worse (4.00 / 1)
than McCains knowledge of the Iranian Power Heirarchy is his conflating the words of Ahmadinejad with the policy of Hamas.  In todays argument with Joe KLein, McCain said

When he's the person that comes to the United Nations and declares his country's policy is the extermination of the state of Israel, quote, in his words, wipe them off of the map

This is a bogus talking point that McCain has twisted to mirror the bogus talking point of Hamas refusing to recognize Israel's right to exist.  What Ahmadinejad actually said in a speech (not at the UN) where he quoted the words of the late Ayatollah Khomenei
Let's analyze what Ahmadinejad said. His exact words in Farsi were as follows: "Emam goft een rezhim-e eshghalgar-e qods bayad az safheh-ye ruzegar mahv shavad." The correct translation of the statement is as follows: "Imam said this occupying regime in Jerusalem must vanish from the page of times."

So McCain said something utterly stupid and he finally got called on it.  Kudos to Klein.  The problem is that we continue to give McCain and others of his kind a pass on the nature of the Iranians actual posture toward Israel.  I highly recommend reading this article and bookmarking it: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/... by Sam Sedaei, which analyses exactly what Ahmadinejad exactly said and implied in that speech.  It was just one speech and just one line where he quoted another person.  It is not the policy of Iran.  It has been twisted and twisted and repeated ad nauseum, into a lie that is the basis for McCain and his minions championing a hit on Iran.  We should start calling him on this as well.
