An old friend of mine who has been involved in Chicago politics since before Harold Washington's day, Don Wiener, unearthed this old video from a labor rally in Chicago in 2003. Obama wasn't on the program or planning to speak, but Congressman Danny Davis had taken him to the rally and asked him to come up and say a few words on the spur of the moment. To my knowledge, this video hasn't ever been shown anywhere, and it's kind of fun, showing Obama at his fired up progressive best. It's short, only about 45 seconds, but I thought you'd enjoy it.

Update: Here's the YouTube of this clip.

Wow! That's a great video. (0.00 / 0)
It shows he's been remarkably consistent.

I wish he had been talking like that last summer. (0.00 / 0)
I was disappointed in Summer 2007 when Obama was debating Edwards, Clinton, et. al., that he was not speaking in strong progressive terms like he was in that clip, and as I remember from his Senate campaign.

He should have used that in rust belt ads! (0.00 / 0)
That would have been a perfect way to show that he has always had the concerns of working people foremost in his mind and politics. He could have used that clip along with his excellent line (used in Indiana and NC ads) that politics didn't bring him to working people, working people brought him to politics....

Missed Opportunities (0.00 / 0)
Why is the Obama campaign not scheduling him, at least sometimes, into union halls, union conventions etc.--and having him give this kind of speech, and, oh, maybe have a few video cameras on hand, and...

Someone needs to wake up--or get a new memory chip...
