Boswell's Over-Reaction

I went to the 50th wedding anniversary of some old friends in Des Moines over the weekend, and the Fallon/Boswell race had everybody talking. The crowd there- mostly older labor union people- was split down the middle in terms of who was supporting who, but the interesting thing was that the Boswell campaign has gone over the top with nasty mailings about Ed that it is causing a serious backlash. With his money and huge name ID edge, and the fact that Boswell has kept in good touch with the district and is well-liked personally, he should have won this race without breaking a sweat. I'll be surprised if Ed can win with all of Boswell's advantages.

But Boswell's over-the-top negative campaign against Ed has caused a serious negative reaction, and has got everyone talking. I talked to at least half a dozen people who said they were planning to vote for Leonard, but have switched to Ed because of the mailings, and even Boswell's supporters have been made nervous and set on edge by the mailings.

I think Ed will fall a little short tonight, but if he wins, give at least some of the credit to Boswell's mistakes.

Mike .. (4.00 / 1)
Are there any sore loser laws in Iowa? .. if Fallon won ... what are the prospects of Boswell running as an Indy? .. and would Boswell resign soon(like Al Wynn) if Fallon won?

Indy run (4.00 / 1)
I'm pretty sure Boswell can't do the Indy route, not unless the legislature sneaked something through when I wasn't looking.
I doubt if Leonard would resign early, doesn't seem like his style.

I guess I should say this for the sake of snarkiness (0.00 / 0)
If Fallon loses, should he concede and endorse Boswell?

he has been saying all year (4.00 / 1)
that he will support the winner of the primary.

I worry about whether Boswell would support Fallon in the event that Fallon wins the primary.

that's good to know (0.00 / 0)
Then again, would you blame him if he changed his mind after this recent round of nasty mailers?

yes, I would (0.00 / 0)
because for me it's about beating Republicans, not about acting out some revenge fantasy.

I will always support the winner of the primary.

That doesn't mean I would volunteer for Boswell, give him money, or put his bumper sticker on my car, but I will vote for him if he wins the primary and would not condone an independent bid by Fallon (not that Ed would attempt to run as an independent).

I was thinking more of (0.00 / 0)
A disgruntled and bitter reaction like Paul Hackett before he gave in and endorsed Sherrod Brown rather than an independent run.

at Bleeding Heartland (4.00 / 2)
quite a few commenters are convinced that the hit pieces will backfire on Boswell.

The 527 group mailings include the phone number of Fallon's campaign, and someone on his staff told me that they've gotten more calls from people who were outraged by the mailings than calls from people who were mad at Ed Fallon because of an issue raised in the mailings.

And of those calls ... (0.00 / 0)
it just gives him voter contacts .. which means a chance to make a good impression on a voter  ;-)
