IL-Sen: Jan Schakowsky To Replace Obama?

Although I rarely trust people who write about themselves in third person, here is a bit of news that would be exactly the sort of step needed to help build a more progressive Senate. Apparently, Jan Schakowsky is seeking to replace Barack Obama in the Sneate, should Obama become President:

Word is U.S. Rep. Jan Schakowsky, who's angling to be Obama's replacement, has been grabbing the Excedrin bottle lately -- ever since Duckworth's name appeared in Sneed's column.

Now, if you can get beyond the rather absurd self-aggrandizement of the columnist who, while writing in the third person, claiming that Schakowsky has someone suffered physical pain as a result of his column, you can focus on the very hopeful news that Rep. Jan Schakowsky is looking to be Obama's replacement in the Senate.

Schakowsky is exactly the sort of person we need in the Senate to start building up the progressive network that Matt has been writing about. She votes right on everything and, beyond that, is notable as a fighter for introducing progressive legislation that is even included in the Responsible Plan To End the War In Iraq. And, as Matt has also noted, adding one person can also make a very large difference. This is both because a single Senator can hold up a lot of legislation on his or her own, and because the overall strength of the network increases exponentially as more nodes are added to it. If you start adding people like Schakowsky, or Merkley and Allen, to an existing group like Feingold, Dodd, Kennedy, Brown, Sanders and Boxer, then the overall strength of the network continues to increase exponentially. Imagine what a tightly knit Senate caucus of 15 Feingolds could accomplish.

This is a hopeful sign. Obama in the White House, and Schakowsky in the Senate, would be a significant improvement on the current political situation. Not only would be get the trifecta, but we would continue to increase the budding progressive network in the Senate, too. She is the clear cut choice for Obama's replacement, and I'd love to find some ways to help her out.

For an earlier post on the same subject, Rahm Emanuel has also been floated as a replacement for Obama.

Schakowsky is a cosponsor of HR 676, Medicare for all.

Makes some sense (0.00 / 0)
I could see Jan on the Governor's short list as an appointee.  I don't think that Rahm would want it, he would lose what influence he has in the House and have to start over in the Senate.

My job is not to represent Washington to you, but to represent you to Washington- Obama

She's maintained her good relations with the toxic Blago through all his travails. So it'd be much easier to reward her than say, Jesse Jackson Jr. (although he would also be an excellent replacement).

From her district, we could probably find a very progressive voice to replace her. That's a net of one progressive in the Congress, which is good.

Agreed (4.00 / 1)
Even as an Obama supporter, I can honestly say she'd be a big improvement in the Senate.

She Would Really Be Great (0.00 / 0)
Among other things, I heard her speak to an activist conference here in LA several years ago.  Not party activists, either.  Progressive, community-based activists.

Saw a story about Duckworth being promoted (4.00 / 1)
I can't remember where.  It hinted that Oabma and maybe Durbin were promoting her.  I can't believe people like Schakowsky would take that without protest.  I guess Emmanuel figures he'd be too many years away from leadership in the Senate and will stay put in the hopes of being Speaker.  But bring in Duckworth ahead of all those other congressmembers?  Stinks.  Maybe someone floated it to get it shot down.

John McCain--He's not who you think he is.

I agree (4.00 / 4)
Jan was an enormous supporter of Obama during his primary run - much more so than any other Dem leader, besides perhaps Durbin.

If Obama has any say, he could persuade Blago to move her to the Senate.  And of course, it would only be an issue if Obama wins, when he would have a tiny bit of influence.  :)

Cross your fingers - this could be a great win for us, and another woman in the Senate to boot!

But it would be fitting (0.00 / 0)
Since Jan was part of the cabal (along with Rahm, Barack, and Dick) who pulled the rug out from under grassroots progressive Christine Cegelis by working against her and helping Duckworth raise the $750,000 she needed every penny of to win the 2006 IL-6 primary against Christine (so that she could then blow through $3 Million of DCCC money in the general, losing because she never took a stand on the major issues and refused to build any kind of field campaign).

Jan loved Tammy so much then, why should she be bothered if Tammy's backers do to her exactly what she helped do to Christine.

Karma is a bitch sometimes!

Is anyone in Illinois .. (0.00 / 0)
seriously excited about Tammy Duckworth getting appointed to the Senate if Obama wins?  Wouldn't there probably be primary challenges to her in '10?  Besides ... I think that article is just an attempt to get the reporters name out there

You'd be surprised (0.00 / 0)
She does have a core following and Rahm and Durbin are both supporters. It would really surprise me however and I bet that local progressives wouldn't be fans of such a move. IMO Jan would be the clear choice for the grassroots.

And Michael Sneed is a woman (4.00 / 1)
Or else a fantastic female impersonator, from the picture.  So change your pronoun.  Who says no one clicks through!

John McCain--He's not who you think he is.

She's my congressperson (4.00 / 2)
and has never let me down. She'd absolutely class up the Senate. I don't believe Durban would do anything to hurt her chances -- he's much closer to her politically than Duckworth is. And she's in an absolutely safe seat -- nobody even bothers to run against her in a visible way. I'll be calling Durbin and the guv to give them my 2 cents worth. Who else would be involved?

PS-- Yup, Michael Sneed is definitely a she.

My congressperson, too, for many years! (0.00 / 0)
I literally can't recall a single incidence in which I disagreed with anything Jan S. has ever said.  It's actually ridiculous.

She could be another Feingold or Wellstone.

Yeah, the trouble with Jan Schakowsky (4.00 / 1)
is that it's always a waste of time to write to her.  She's always there already.

And yes, she was for Obama 4 prez long before I was.

In '04 she used love to tell the story of Bush's eyes bugging out when he saw her Obama (for Senate) pin, back in the day when no one outside of the Chicago area had ever heard of him.  He apparently thought it said "Osama".

Couldn't be a greater pick... (4.00 / 5)
This would be a huge win to move Jan to the Senate.  I have lived in Jan's district for as long as she's held the office and have been a big Jan fan, as we say locally.  She is great on every issue, minus, in my opinion, Israel.  But the district has a huge Jewish population.  Can't agree on everything and she is certainly a committed progressive and isn't afraid to be partisan or an outspoken voice for us.

She has a real chance since she is friends with the governor and many other possible Obama replacements are not (see AG Lisa Madigan).  He's not endeared himself to many Dems the past few years.

The governor, Blago, could choose Rahm, likely because he could likely offer something better in return.  But Rahm, may want to stay put and move up the house chain of command.

Of course, the governor could appoint himself, which would not be out of the realm of possibility as he likely doesn't have a future in the next election as governor.  He hasn't been a leader, but he has signed on to progressive legislation - National Popular Vote, LGBT rights, property tax caps, death penalty reform, etc.

The real reason I'd like Jan to move, besides the reasons articulated by Chris and others, is her possible replacement.  Julie Hamos is a state rep who is equally progressive and pragmatic.  She pushes buttons and knows how to get things done.  She would be a good progressive voice to replace Jan, if things emerged that way.  And since she lives in Jan's district, they are friends and they share office space in the district, it could be a no-brainer for Julie to replace Jan.

Personally I feel incredibly lucky to be represented by Durbin, Obama, Jan and Julie.  Not perfect, but a pretty good set of representation for me.

Let's hope things work out for Jan and Julie - it would move us ahead in the Senate, and keep us even in the House, I believe.

Blago? (0.00 / 0)
Hmm... never occurred to me the guv might want the seat for himself. I've always thought he saw himself as a kind of JFKish figure destined for the highest offices. He'd continue to be kind of embarrassing for Illinoisans, but actually could be a pretty good progressive senator in terms of what he voted for. But Jan would be so much more, there's no comparison. I hope we seize the opportunity.

Julie Hamos is spectacular! (0.00 / 0)
A word I haven't assigned a politician since joining OpenLeft.

As a high-schooler years ago, I could drop into Julie's office and actually talk to her - she made herself remarkably accessible to community activists as well.  For instance, she's been meeting with close friends of mine to help support the Evanston "Talking Farm," a sustainable urban agriculture demonstration project.

She's a true progressive, and a lock for Jan's seat if Jan moved up, I would think.  I guess Larry Suffredin could go after it, but they all get along as far as I know.

She campaigned for Obama a lot in Iowa (4.00 / 1)
She was a big early supporter of Obama. Of all the Illinois Rep's, I think she campaigned the most in Iowa on Obama's behalf.

She supported Obama... (0.00 / 0)
when he was still running 4th or 5th in the Illinois Senate race - I remember, because I was there to see him speak!

I'm glad to see a woman, Duckworth, floated. (0.00 / 0)
That may actually be a strong card for Schakowsky. If Blago wants to stay in politics then I can see him naming himself as his days as Governor are numbered; to the end of the term more likely than sooner. Attempting to trade someone else's support (Madigan? Emanuel? Durbin?) for their nominee is all too unlikely and not likely to help him remain Governor in any case.

But if he sees himself bowing out, then who knows what might influence his decision. He does fancy himself as a good progressive, so maybe Jan might appeal to him in the end.

This is pretty old news (0.00 / 0)
she said herself that she would be interested in it in February on the local news.

Yes she wants it, yes she is on the shortlist and yes she would be the best pick.

Sneed doesn't know a darn thing (0.00 / 0)
Sneed never knows what's going on.  her biggest scoops are stories that are two weeks old.

I wouldn't believe a thing she says.  Yeah, Jan may want to be Senator, but I would bet $100 that neither her nor any current congressman will be appointed.

That's not how G-Rod works.
