Obama, Paris and Britney Are The Top Three--In Spam

Yesterday, while reading the McCain's campaign's deep, philosophic defense of the Britney Spears and Paris Hilton ad, this line struck me as strange:

"What we decided to do is find the top three international celebrities in the world, and I would say from our estimations Britney and Paris came in second and third," Davis said. "So from our perspective we have in this ad the three biggest celebrities in the world."

So, the McCain campaign was sitting around, trying to rank the top three celebrities in the world? That sounds like a dignified, important piece of work for a presidential campaign. But I have to wonder-how did they arrive at this determination?

Today, after looking at my email, I think I have the answer: spam. Britney Spears, Paris Hilton and Barack Obama do actually appear to be the three people who show up the most often in spam emails. For example, here are the subject lines of the following spam emails in just the last twenty-four hours:

Britney and Paris Lesbian video
For: chris. Britney and Paris Lesbian video
Paris and Britney nude.
Paris Hilton Free Video.
Britney caught nude again. Watch.
Britney Spears and Paris Hilton are lovers. Video proof.
Britney and Paris having fun together. Watch.

While, in the last twenty-four hours, I didn't receive any spam email about Obama being a secret Muslim, or wanting to destroy the United States, and hating whitey, or not wearing a flag pin, it does happen on a fairly regular basis. Obama probably ranks third, behind Paris Hilton and Britney Spears on this front.

So, there you have it. If you are looking at spam email that engages in lying, slanderous attacks, then Obama probably is one of the three top "celebrities" in the world. However, all that really means is that the attacks on Obama are about as false and stupid as the emails people receive about supposed videos of Paris and Britney making out while nude.

(Also, let me say that looking through my spam folder was a frightening experience.)

Passing Thought (4.00 / 1)
Somewhere in the world, Kathy Griffin is pissed off.  Would it have killed McCain to include Kathy in the campaign ad?  Life is so unfair to those on the D-list!

sometimes commenting sux. eat this, commenting tool!

as i was saying: chris, let's not overestimate what this sort of discourse does, and means, in the results of the electorate. duncan and others are fond of pointing out that most amurkins like to use the intertubes for pr0n and shopping in far greater number than are they to obtain our politically 'high' information and upon which they base voting decisions. even with the young intertube generation, there is still a voting skew towards lies, foolishness, and emotional appeal. that is to say, a republican advantage. how else could mcshame hold a (likely false) "dead heat" with obama, in these times of historically high gas prices and economic uncertainty?

generally, historically, the "young" don't vote in numbers to throw an election. yes, they may download videos of mcshame and brittney "trust the preznit," but they don't, as people like yourself say, "make the difference." so...what about those that do? what are the politically relevant reading? who produces what they read? how do we get into, and affect, that discourse? you know better than i. i just don't want this to be another repeat of kerry (whom i believe did not, in fact lose the election of 04) in which there is overconfidence b/c of 'new technologies' and failures of perception of basic, political history and the practical understanding of such.

on the ground, GOTV efforts are what matters, most, always. you, chris, from personal experience, understand this better than most. let's spend more time advocating, and highlighting such, rather than worrying over the back and forth of a few internet communities that are essentially (forgive me) self-referential and irrelevant to the national political scene. let's face it- that's more or less what we still are. until we can raise a competing amount (what is it now? a billion?) we can't really say we "shape the media landscape" and thus have an impact on the ~300 million voters for whom the SCLM is still the prime and most important resource by which political decisions are made.

paris and brittney respond to McCain with their own negative ad: (0.00 / 0)
In their anti-McCain spot, the two starlets fight fire with fire, comparing Sen. McCain to the Joker from the smash-hit film "The Dark Knight."

"It's perfectly fair," Ms. Spears said of the ad. "They both have pasty white faces and totally creepy smiles."

I get hundreds of spam e-mails a day and none with Obama for at least the last week... But I do get "Angelina Jolie naked video" several times a day! (And yesterday, I even got "Hillary Clinton naked video" once!)

My spam folder (0.00 / 0)
reveals a disappointing dearth of celebrity sex tape offers. Though, I  was propositioned by a mysterious woman named Ariana who found me on "that dating site".

No mention of founding and prominent left-leaning blogs though...

C'mon Chris, spam can be fun! (0.00 / 0)
Received at work earlier this week (before the McCain ad):

Subj: Nation mourns tragic loss of Britney Spears

Message body: Rapper 50 Cent to be McCain's VP pick.

There was a link that I dared not click on (remember, I was at work), but the message gave me quite a chuckle!

But (4.00 / 1)
How often do you receive emails promising Barack Obama nude?

And would you click on it if you did? (0.00 / 0)
That would be a good piece of spam!

Turns out (0.00 / 0)
In between Paris and Britney moaning, you can hear Michelle Obama saying "whitey".

Blessedly free of spam... (0.00 / 0)
Having signed up with CompuServe and then loading OzWin, my e-mails were scrubbed of the "nude Britney photos" on my first laptop. Later Compaqs didn't have a Spam or Junk Mail folder (my inadvertent choice?) and I didn't see the spam as it came in and was rejected.

According to Chris' thesis, McCain, the internet newbie, is taking advantage of one of the internet's worst options.

A bit off topic.... (0.00 / 0)
But with regard to this race baiting business, it was the MCcain campaign that first started the dollar bill and Mt Rushmore bullshit.

Change you can photoshop? (0.00 / 0)
Good grief. Talk about channeling Hillary! The doofus is running the exact same campaign.
