Was alleged anthrax killer a Christian Zionist trying to instigate Armageddon?

(A very significant question here that far too few people are asking. - promoted by Paul Rosenberg)

Christian Zionists believe that Jews are the chosen people and that there must be an "ingathering" of Jews to the Holy Land to precipitate Armageddon and the second coming of Christ. Muslims are usually cast as the satanically influenced villians. As Glenn Greenwald writes:

...large numbers of [US] Christians -- 31% -- believe in "Christian Zionism." In the poll, that was "defined as a belief that Israel must have all of the promised land, including Jerusalem, to facilitate the second coming of the messiah." It thus seems fair -- even necessary -- to assume that at least some sizable support among Christians for the Bush administration's Middle Eastern militarism is due not to their loyalty to U.S. interests, but instead to their theological desire to strengthen Israel in order to bring about the return of the messiah.

Bruce Ivins, the US government biowar scientist who is now the prime suspect in the anthrax murders that came within a week of 9/11 and pumped up war hysteria against Muslims, wrote several letters to the editor that suggest he was a supporter of the rightwing political Christian movement in the US, and that he very much believed that the Jews were the "chosen."

Originally published August 24, 2006 Rabbi Morris Kosman is entirely correct in summarily rejecting the demands of the Frederick Imam for a "dialogue."
By blood and faith, Jews are God's chosen, and have no need for "dialogue" with any gentile. End of "dialogue."

Originally published November 09, 2004 I read Deborah Carter's column of Nov. 7, "Election blues," and I have three comments for the good woman, and for everybody else, as well.

First, it's clear that views like hers would put Jesus on that cross again. Second, thy loom and churn best be still, come the Sabbath. Third, you can get on board or get left behind, because that Christian Nation Express is pulling out of the station!

Taken together, these two letters are strong circumstantial evidence that Bruce Ivins was a Christian Zionist. For more on the threat of Christian Zionism, here is an excellent article from the National Catholic Reporter:

Religion and politics. It's an incendiary combination anywhere, and particularly in the Middle East where Christian fundamentalists, often working in tandem with Jewish Messianic settlers, promote the formation of a Greater Israel that they believe will usher in Armageddon itself. Many of this country's most ardent Christian supporters of Israel welcome that prospect. Others who don't subscribe to the end-of-time theology of "dispensational premillennialism" worry that the agenda pushed by the tactical alliance between Jewish and Christian fundamentalists will transform the Israeli-Palestinian conflict from a battle between two nationalities into a war of civilizations that will engulf the world.

"It's a very tragic situation in which Christian fundamentalists, certain groups of them that focus on Armageddon and the Rapture and the role of a war between Muslims and Jews in bringing about the Second Coming, are involved in a folie à deux with extremist Jews," said Ian Lustick, a professor of political science at the University of Pennsylvania, a consultant on the Middle East to the last four presidential administrations and the author of the book For the Land and the Lord: Jewish Fundamentalism in Israel.
....

The United States' current and exclusive focus on Islamic fundamentalism is a case of what some argue is selective blindness.

"We pay a lot of attention to Islamic extremism, but we don't pay a lot of attention to Christian extremism or the extremism in the Jewish religion that is being used to justify what is going on today," said James Zogby, founder and president of the Arab American Institute in Washington, speaking about the turmoil in the Middle East. Zogby argues that despite disclaimers to the contrary the United States is waging a war on Islam at home and abroad even as it tacitly supports extremist settlers in the occupied territories Israel controls.

This dude was one weird guy ... (4.00 / 1)
I know Ivins lawyer has said he had nothing to do with the anthrax stuff .. but it doesn't seem like anyone asked the lawyer about these letters ... and what are government scientists doing .. especially ones that come into contact with dangerous chemicals .. making these kinds of beliefs public .. this obviously isn't new .. and we know Hatfill(despite the settlement) was involved with right wing groups .. how do these people get sensitive clearances?

Unfortunately (4.00 / 1)
This sort of work attracts people like that the way shit attracts flies.

And since they're obviously not Commies, what's the problem?

Who does Paul work for? Wake up children! (0.00 / 0)

Given all the things I've read coming from Paul, I'm beginning to wonder if he isn't just another bought and paid for corporate shill, whose numbers are too numerous to count throughout the Internet these days, inhabiting conservative, moderate and liberal blogs, they are paid to promote disinformation and misinformation everywhere they go.

Corporate America is deathly afraid of Barack Obama, hence a whole new roster of these individuals has surfaced on the Internet, some of them knowing wanton followers of the corporate dollar, others are just easily manipulated fools who have been conned into promoting the corporate agenda.

Any person who has any understanding of how our military BioLab's operate, would immediately wonder how an employee was able to walk out of the building with weapons grade anthrax.  They don't just leave that stuff laying around for anyone to pick up, even their most trusted employees are continuously screened and checked.

Or perhaps anyone who understands how the FBI operates, would question the validity of stories that tell us the FBI went around questioning this guys friends and family before they made an arrest, and told his friends and family not to tell the guy he was about to be arrested.  You've got to be fucking kidding me.

For anyone who understands how our government really works, this whole thing's screams cover-up and conspiracy, but of course the bought and paid for corporate media is selling this individual as the lone crazy, that's right for 30 years a crazy person managed to evade continuous psychological testing and evaluation, polygraphs and a vast array of other bureaucratic accountability methods to infiltrate one of our most sensitive government sites.  Yeah right, and my mama was Muhammad Ali. It's a sad day when so-called liberals, swallow this garbage being spoon fed to them by a completely co-opted media.  It seems like you guys here at openleft are just more lemmings ready to run over the nearest cliff whenever you're told to do so by some talking head on CNN or CBS.

My neighborhood in Fort Lauderdale was cordoned off for a short period, because someone got a suspicious envelope with powder in it.  And North of us in Boca Raton a number of people died after they were exposed. Even then, I knew it wasn't some foreign terrorist, or some lone nut, but I knew even then that the government was going to try and sell us such a story sooner or later.

Those of us who can think for ourselves will not swallowing this tripe so easily.  Once it was discovered that this anthrax came from a US government lab, they had to find a patsy.  The first one didn't work out, couldn't get him to crumble, so I imagine some of our intelligence people, probably the same ones who went renegade along with this current presidential administration, spent some time working on this guy, and setting him up for the frame that was doubtless in the works for years.  Then tipped him off that he was under investigation, and then tipped him off again just before he was arrested, perhaps with the hope that he would commit suicide, or perhaps to set the scenario for a covert assassination. Our kids in the CIA and among the other various black ops organizations we have running around in and outside of the country, are very good at making things look a certain way, but I must admit I'm impressed with the Tylenol codeine overdose, that's a new one. It sounds so plausible and believable, doesn't it.

I don't hold out much hope that Paul Rosenberg is able to think for himself, but perhaps the rest of you here should consider digging a little deeper into this story, otherwise you're no better than the bought and paid weasel media we have, who are quite obviously paid to keep the American people in the dark.

And for the record, should I turn up dead from an overdose of prescription drugs, or should I somehow be accidentally run over by a government licensed tractor trailer while I'm walking by the side of the road, rest assured I did not commit suicide, and that my death was not an accident. Not that it would matter to any of you, at least until it's you or one of you or your family members that turns up dead, and to your naïve astonishment, the media begins portraying as some crazy lunatic.

God save us from the idiot morons and the bought and paid for corporate slaves.  Wake up guys, because this election is for all the marbles, we either take our country back or lose it for good and all.  Sometimes I don't think you children have any idea who and what you're up against in this fight,  people who are prepared to commit mass murder at the drop of a hat to keep this country out of the hands of its rightful sovereign the American people, people who would slaughter Americans in the tens of thousands if they thought it could consolidate their grip on power.  And mark my words, there will be plenty more blood before this is all over, there always is.

All I did was promote this diary, and suddenly I'm in the upper echelons of the Bavarian Illuminati?

What the Hell does this diary have to do with the Presidential election, anyway?

And if Corporate America is deathly afraid of Barack Obama, why does everyone going to the DNC get this:

Or are you just pulling my leg?

Inquiring minds want to know!

Hey Paul, where you been? (0.00 / 1)
Without you here I have no one to mercilessly pummel into submission.  :-)

And when it comes to you Paul, I'm always just messing with you, and I'm always completely serious. Your job is to figure out exactly which. Maybe this will help.

Everything I say is a lie.

Now listen closely Paul, because this is key.

I'm lying.

And since you posted a picture with the AT&T logo, I will assume that you are part of that evil empire which has dogged my every step for the last 20 years, and will treat you accordingly from now on. I knew it all along, just need you to confirm my suspicions, which you have unconsciously and foolishly done.

Rest assured from this moment forward, the forces of real liberalism will be watching your every move. Not the forces of fake pseudo corporate liberalism, that you obviously work for, but the true liberal insurgents and real progressives revolutionaries who at this very moment are working tirelessly to topple the forces of corporate control.

What is it that the Muslims say, a running man can slit the throat of a thousand corporate dogs in one night. So to all the rat bastard CEOs, and fatcat corporate media slugs leaving their slime trails of mendacity across America, to them I say, be afraid, be very afraid.

that our Friends From The Fringe would be throwing sweets and flowers?

You're pretty well read in US history, so I suspect that The Paranoid Style in American Politics is something you've probably read.

I personally think it's premature to speculate too much about Ivin's motives.  I'm waiting for more info to actually surface, including some confirmation that he really did have a history of making death threats.  While it does appear that he was religious (Catholic, I thought), I would not have tagged the guy as a millennialist, it's a big step to go from a letter to the editor to murder.

It's also worth remembering that the disturbed tend to gravitate towards belief systems consistent with their internal impulses.  And it does sound like this guy was severely disturbed.

Chris Hedges wrote on this topic in 2006 (4.00 / 2)
His book, American Fascists: The Christian Right and The War on America, discusses apocalyptic violence and the Rapture. The various notes I took while reading it range from "how they gain converts by stealth" to [how they] "create a parallel reality."

A chapter on contributing factors gets specific, like this line: "The triviality of American popular culture, its emptiness and gossip, accelerates this destruction of critical thought. It expands the void, the mindlessness that makes the magic, mythology and irrationality of the Christian Right palatable." Then Hedges goes on with his critique of popular culture.

No individual "villians" in Hedges' book, rather the broad movement that he sees as so dangerous. As Paul says above,

"A very significant question here that far too few people are asking."

are you kidding me? (4.00 / 1)
Firstly, do you honestly believe a social worker, who seemingly is the only person with these incredible claims, shouldn't be questioned herself?  Are you even aware she was let go for unprofessional conduct?  Have you ever heard of a psychiatric diagnosis like that?  Do you believe that someone who,  in secret for years, methodological, meticulous, is magically going to proclaim to a group that he is going to go out in a blaze of glory without actually doing it?

Why, if someone was trying to poison people for almost 8 years was no one notified?

Most importantly, if even one element of this were true, why would that person not be in jail on felony charges or at minimum kept locked up?

That's the first part.  The second part is the "hard" evidence.

Are you even aware that bacteria spores on the same strain all have the same basic DNA?  This is not human DNA!  On top of it, anthrax takes a long time to mutate.  Even with advances, where is the statement that individual spores, can be identified as exact and most importantly through time, i.e. exact from that period?

What about the manufacture of airborne, weaponized spores?  Are you even aware the lab had anthrax in liquid form?  That to turn it into weaponized anthrax takes time and a lot of equipment?  That he was the head of that lab, there were tons of people in there.  Don't you think they would have noticed some activity like that or do you think he set up a little lab in the woods or his closet or magically that would even work and not contaminate his family, the dog and the neighbors?  Just a little red flag there on the manufacturing processing!

Another very strong question is his lab is the one which analyzed the FBI evidence!  It is simply possible that the FBI mishandled the evidence and spores got loose in areas and contaminated the scene?

I'm sorry but so far I just see massive press smears with few asking hard, objective questions.  It's not like our government has ever lied or the FBI in the past ever mucked up an investigation here.

So to add to this guilty before innocent activity we're now trying to say he was a religious freak out to start some Armageddon?

Was that in-between the grass recycling or before the red cross volunteering?

Please, so far he reads like a typical research scientist that if one said boo to, he jumped a mile high and was very sensitive.

Can ya all wait to see the real evidence for, to date, I see nothing that can make this guy guilty in the details and it's well known a witch hunt went on in Fort Detrick.

Even if he did lose his cookies (and he obviously did, he killed himself), having the FBI target you for years trying to ruin your entire career, your reputation and then literally hang on you mass murder, the death penalty is assuredly enough to drive anyone over the edge.
