Opening the Day: Newt Wants To Shut the Government Down Again Over Drilling

Dog days of summer.

  • Newt Gingrich wants Republicans to shut the government down over drilling.  Here's Tom Daschle.

"The Republicans haven't had much luck with shutdowns in recent years, and I can't imagine that this would be any different," he said. "The American people want to see progress, they want to see comity, they want to see bipartisanship. They want to see some action, not shutdowns. I can't imagine they would fare any better this time."

    Bleh.

  • Arianna writes about the Politics of Nothing.  Yup, that's 2008.

  • McCain's new ad emphasizes the disgusting bipartisan praise of John McCain by leading Democrats.

  • The Obama campaign tried to run ads on gas pumps.  They purchased the time and space, and then the gas stations rejected the ads because they attacked oil companies and John McCain.

  • Not ok (via catherine).

Greyhound has scrapped an ad campaign that extolled the relaxing upside of bus travel after one of its passengers was accused of beheading and cannibalizing another traveler.

The ad's tag line was "There's a reason you've never heard of 'bus rage.'"

  • Nikki Tinker's latest anti-semitic ad has drawn a denouncement from her supporting group, EMILY's List. Howie Klein has more

  • Here's Tom Daschle.

A senior adviser to Barack Obama has blamed recent attack advertisements comparing the Democratic presidential hopeful to celebrities Britney Spears and Paris Hilton for a dip in Mr Obama's polls with voters.

Tom Daschle, the former Democratic Senate majority leader, said in an interview with the Financial Times that the Mr Obama's Republican rival John McCain was seeing a "short-term blip" as a result of the advertising, including one that used the image of Charlton Heston as Moses to mock the supposedly messianic Mr Obama as being "The One".

About that ad: (4.00 / 3)
On one hand, that ad strikes me as the first from McCain that is effective.  On the other hand, it also would seem to invite a pretty easy (and necessary) response.

Each of those Dems quoted should now stand together, stating simply that McCain is not the same man he used to be (or appeared to be).  Indeed, that could and should be the defining attack message from Obama.

Or... (4.00 / 1)
I'm sure Obama could put together an ad where high profile Republicans say nice things about him. Huckabee, Romney, Pawlenty, McCain, Ron Paul, Sarah Palin, I'm sure there are others.

Of course, who wants praise from Republicans anymore? There's a reason all of these Republicans are running ads about whether Democrats like them or not.

Exactly (0.00 / 0)
We complain when Democrats say nice things about Republicans, but both sides do it.  The difference is Republicans rarely ever say bad things about other Republicans; the exception, of course, being during primaries, which is why the Hillary quote doesn't matter as much.

Obama would have no problem putting together something similar, I think.

Still, it is a good ad from McCain.

Hi, i'm congressman x... (4.00 / 2)
... I turned on my TV the other day and saw John McCain is using me in one of his campaign ads. Well, it's true I said what I said about the 2002 model McCain. But folks, the 2008 model McCain is a lemon... it's been recalled by the dealer already... the 2008 model McCain is as moral as used grease...  the 2008 model McCain is as firm as pudding... the 2008 model McCain is as angry as rabid squirrel.

And so I say to John McCain - don't use me in your campaign ads... because what I say to you today is - John McCain is a lousy candidate for president!

Good idea (0.00 / 0)
Having each of those Dems make a statement about how McCain totally sold out to Bush & Co would be effective.

Although, I'm not sure how the statement from Hillary could be turned around; she said that during the primaries. Ugggh...

On that idea of running ads at gas pumps, that was a great idea, too bad it didn't pan out.

You say exactly that (0.00 / 0)
It was said during the heat of an intense primary battle. And when asked she will say Obama must be elected as she has done multiple times already.

It would be a good political (4.00 / 1)
move for Obama to blast Tinker's anti-Semitism.

Oh, and it'd be the right thing to do.

No - it most definitely isn't (4.00 / 1)
Bad bad Media-wise for the Democratic Party and Obama -- this is exactly what the Clintons and the f*ers want -- to stretch out story...

Newt (4.00 / 2)
Yeah, it's funny how you never see those Newt Gingrich/Nancy Pelosi global warming ads anymore.

Just shows how dumb the whole "bipartisan solution" bullshit is. Al Gore should have known better, now he has egg on his face. Has Pat Robertson joined the drill here/drill now crowd? If not, only a matter of time....

Basically, they all said, McCain changed, he's not he "maverick" of 2000.
